Thank you very much, Ellen! I'm thrilled that the team enjoyed the video! It was a lot of fun to research all of these materials. I plan to release videos more frequently now - I think that you'll like the video that I'm working on next. It's got a healthy mix of creative coding, data visualization, science, Arduino, CNC, and laser cutting/engraving.

Can you engrave tumbler cups?
@ThatSocratesguy
@ThatSocratesguy 3 жыл бұрын
Wait let me get this right, you can't engrave metals like stainless steel, silver or gold with the glowforce (without the workarounds you mentioned like the spray or powder coating)?? That's a bummer. 😓 So that means the glowforce basically isn't really meant for engraving jewelry like stainless steel or silver bracelets /pendants etc?
@macrumpton
@macrumpton 3 жыл бұрын
@@ThatSocratesguy To really engrave metals directly like you mention you would need a much more powerful laser. The workaround is that you can coat the metal piece with some kind of paint and then use the laser to burn through the areas that you want engraved, and then put the metal into an acid bath that eats away at the metal where it is not covered by the paint.
@MrRenoracerx

Chesney Adventures Thanks so much! Absolutely - although you might want to put some of that paper masking on it so that you don’t get soot on your paint (blue painters tape also works in a pinch as long as you don’t overlap it). But I’d you do get soot on your paint, a magic eraser or mild soap and water usually works. Also, it goes without saying... you’d want to avoid anything with old lead paint on it. Ha! Thanks for watching!

What a great video.Very inspiring. I'm thinking of getting a Glowforge and am currently at the research stage. Could you, or any other Glowforge users, tell me if it would be any good for cutting camel bone knife scales?
@JohnKuiphoff
@JohnKuiphoff 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I'm pretty sure that they might engrave well. The bone sample at the end of the video engraved beautifully on the first try. I'd happy to try one out and mail it back to you if that helps. However, cutting the camel bone might be a bit more difficult. My first guess without researching it is that cutting would work better on the cnc machine (or just using a bandsaw with some sanding afterwards) and engraving afterwards using the Glowforge. The only thing is that bone dust isn't too good for you... you might need to wear a good respirator. It also smells pretty bad when being engraved.

Ok first off as a former owner of a LMI ( Laser Machining Inc, Somerset Wisconsin) machine, Corian and any poured solid surface material should be sandblasted using a photo emulsion screen template. It's toxic and will give your shop help headaches, (Workman's comp waiting to happen! Includes cultured marble too unless well ventilated!) I would like to know if the 40 or 45 Pro can cut Melamine, do you have a test? Expanded Foam... the kind used to insulate a house with that Halloween Prop makers use for tombstones and other things. Thank you in advance and subscribed for new content!!!

So far, most informative vid yet. I had to sub as I’ve been looking hard lately. COVID/work here in Canada as a physically challenged scaffolder is tough to support family. Would you recommend the pro model? What about make block? 2 grand cheaper.
@JohnKuiphoff
@JohnKuiphoff 3 жыл бұрын
Hi, Robert. I've certainly been offered a lot more laser engraving / cutting work when COVID hit. For me, it's just a side hustle. I made about $1,500 this month cutting and engraving signs, custom drum badges, gaskets, etc with the Glowforge. I often think about biting the bullet and plunging in full-time. I recently bought the Pro as my basic now has a million miles on it (but it still runs perfectly fine). I don't know that much about the Make Block laser cutter other than what @makesomething (kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rauqqpaF1ZmlmZs.html) showed on one video. Although, he still continues to use the Glowforge in all of his laser cutting videos. With that said, all laser cutters output the same thing... some are easier to use, faster, have a better community, etc. The Glowforge basic worked great for me as I started out... the pro is a little faster and can handle larger materials when you need it to. I'd buy whatever you can afford. I'm sticking with the Glowforge as their engraving quality is incredible - even if it's slower than other machines (which oddly helps with ventilation concerns in a neighborhood). You may also want to look in to a good CNC machine. I also make a lot of money on the side with my Shopbot. I love the Shopbot Desktop Max, Avid is another good brand CNC; the new X-Carve Pro is pricey, but easy to use - I owned their first model starting out. I recently started working on building a full Glowforge course - I'd be happy to give you an early access link to it. The full course will be released in March or April. Also, I'm happy to talk more about the business if you'd like. My email is kuiphoff[at]gmail.com

Hi, Dale! I've done so much more with the Glowforge since recording this video. ha! It's an awesome machine. I'm happy to do a quick Zoom or phone call with you to help you get started if you're interested. Just shoot me an email at kuiphoff@gmail.com and we'll set something up. I'm around most of the day tomorrow and pretty much all weekend. It's pretty easy to make your money back on the machine while you're learning how to use it. Thanks for watching and we'll talk soon!

Amazing well thought out video. Thank you! Is there still a link to find or buy the materials cutting google doc? Sounds like bit would be an amazing resource as we start working on new materials on our glowforge! Thank you John!!

Amazing video, full of great content! Great production value as well. If I may make a small piece of constructive criticism for future videos. Try to not let the music over power your dialogue. There are a few moments in your video where you get pretty drowned out by that music track! I''m looking forward to seeing more content on this channel!

Brent George Hi, Brent! Thanks so much for the kind words! Absolutely, I’ll keep the music volume in mind. I’m learning a lot with each new video - I’m in the middle of filming and editing a laser cut router template video now and already see things I’d like to improve for the next one. It’s funny... it took years to get good at woodworking - I’m not sure why i expected to be good at video stuff immediately. Ha! I do appreciate any honest feedback as it will make future content better.

Thank you so much for this information! I’m wondering if you have tried the Glowforge on seashells?

Yes, I have! It doesn't make much of a mark. However, if you paint fill the engraving, they look amazing!

That's crazy, thank you! How did you do the stainless? Did it require anything special? Like a spray or enhanced laser?

I usually order the cut pieces from SendCutSend.com as the Glowforge (or any other C02 laser) can't cut metal. It's easy, I just upload my vector file to their website, pay about $30 and get a ton of parts back in a few days. Once I get it back, I spray the stainless steel with Cermark Marking Spray and mark/engrave it in the Glowforge shortly after (300 speed; 100 power; 370 LPI). After that, I just wash off the cermark spray and it's done. Sometimes I got it with Everbright to protect it and bring out the blacks. I didn't use it in this video because I didn't know about it until recently :)

Thanks, John for the great video, full of possibilities. We are also from NJ and would like to know where do you get your wood from?
@JohnKuiphoff

Thanks, Cicero! I purchase most of my solid wood from Willard Brothers in Lawrenceville, NJ. They're really great. I also purchase a lot of proofgrade material directly from Glowforge when it's available. The proofgrade stuff is a little pricey, but it's really nice to work with.
