Copyright recordings and music reproduced by kind permission of Francis Dreyfus Music and Jean Michel Jarre.
Ever since I watched Jean Michel Jarre play the Laser Harp at the Rendez-vous Houston concert in 1986, I've had a dream of playing a Laser Harp one day.
That day has come. :o) I've had a hobby project going on for a while now, and it's finally finished and fully functional. The Laser Harp is still in a prototype state at the moment, with parts scattered around on the floor. The plan is to build a wooden box that will contain all the parts.
It is an unframed Laser Harp. This means that there are no sensors in the ceiling, and it would function just as well outdoors or in a large room. The beams would go on and on until they hit something. All of the Laser Harp's parts are located on the floor.
As no laser harp can make any sound itself, I use my Korg M3 synth as a sound source. Whenever a beam is interrupted, MIDI signals are sent to the synth, which makes the sound.
Sorry, I can't provide any construction plans at the moment, as this would require distribution of my specially programmed control software. This software, which is the "brain" of the Laser Harp is also in a "prototype" state and not ready for end users.
Thanks to my brother Yngve Foshaug for filming this performance.
This is a 100% real working Laser Harp, being played 100% live.
:o)

@JMJarvinenStudio Thank you. :-) I created the Laser Harp by combining an ILDA-compatible laser scanner, an USB->ILDA control box w/software interface, a mirror and a high-speed USB camera with my knowledge as a professional computer software developer and a homebuilt Laser Harp software running on my laptop. ;-) Oh, and a fog machine. :o)

@NinjaDuck1337 Thanks for your question. The laser harp is programmed in such a way that once it starts folding the beams together it stops sending sound on/sound off signals to the synth and enters a mode where it waits for the hand to be removed (or in this case moved down) as its cue to switch off the laser beam, letting me use my hands to control when the light goes out. :-)

This is incredible, very impressive. Its so good to see that in todays technologies people are finally catching up to the amazing visions and sounds Jarre had over 20+ years ago. With todays technology his laser harp of years gone by has resurfaced as an instrument of the future, again. Congratulations this is a fantastic recreation of a pioneering sound and instrument.

I absolutely loved watching this cover as I'm a very big fan of JMJ. It was a pleasure watching you get so much enjoyment and satisfaction playing this song with a real functioning Laser Harp rather than just a keyboard. Congratulations on the Laser Harp Project and I hope it brings you much more entertainment and enjoyment as it develops further and thank you for sharing ALL you're videos, I wish I had had half the talent and skill you do, photography, musical composition, cover songs and not forgetting a frikkin Laser Harp!!

This is the frikkin real deal, very well done! My wife especially liked the curtains :P Just kidding, I showed her because we saw Jarre perform on his harp live at a concert once and she remembered this. It was with Rendez Vous II where the harp even got a little hickup but JM regained control (intentional to show it is real?). I am now off to my Nord lead to try and recreate the Synthex patch :D

@NinoAuricchio Yeah, I needed to create some way to keep in sync with the pre-recorded sequence running on the synth. :o) At the moment the Laser Harp is a lot of pieces placed on a wooden plate, but the plan is to build all the parts into a portable wooden box.

@oufc29 All notes that are used throughout the melody are assigned to a beam each (and this changes during certain points in the song visualized by a dark "wave" through the harp - this is done to avoid having as much as 25-30 beams at the same time). This is the same way it's done on Jarre's harp, except his visualization of changing beams is a bit different. So during each part of the song, my beams are the same notes as on Jarre's harp, with the lowest on the left and highest to the right.

That is totally amazing. I have just started messing about with lasers. (in a safe way) A laser harp is really what I want to do. I also love Jean Michel Jarre's approach to music. Make it unique, but also fun and anyone can enjoy it. The human race needs more people with a positive attitude to life. I mean a positive attitude in thinking and not materialistic greed.
