Thanks for exposing the insides of the LaserCube. Last year, I modified a laser projector into a compact wall-mountable one for my living room, but couldn't get it as small as the Lasercube. Now, I can see that the LaserCube's driver boards and show card are consolidated into a single PCB. Yeah, I ditched the key switch, as well. Now, I'm developing my own MIDI controllable laser synth with a Teensy 4.1 MCU, audio shields, and Cakewalk's DAW. Great times playing cycloids to psy-trance rhythms'!😎

I can remember seeing the original Laser Cube when Robin brought one of the original units to UK LEM; we couldn't believe how compact he'd managed to make it, it's certainly a great little unit for its size and price.

I reckon a basics of how lasers can be done safely video would be very interesting; pretty much all I know is "don't touch, listen to what the LSO says, and do not look into laser with remaining eye".

Hi. I really enjoy your videos. I'm actually quite interested in getting started with lasers myself. So as an idea for a new video maybe you could talk about how to get started, where to get all the safety informations/courses/certifications etc as well as software, hardware etc :) thanks !

I agree with the sugru. You can sort of DIY your own version by mixing silicone and some cornstarch, and it'll sort of come together like a dough eventually!

Oh yeah for large stuff that’s great! I’ve also got some two part mould making putty that I’m gonna try next time.

I am considering rehousing my laser cube pro. More air around the components and a quieter fan.

Fun! Shame they discontinued those. I'm running a couple of proper 2W ILDA projectors, but a standalone battery powered one would've been good for outdoor event use.

Oh the new ones are 2.5w and still battery powered! This one is 1W.
@gsuberland
@gsuberland 3 жыл бұрын
@@seblee Yup, but a grand is a fair investment for something like that, and puts it in competition with mains powered units with far superior galvos and lower beam divergence. The smaller units at a lower price point made a lot more sense in my eyes.

Yeah I agree. I guess they might make sense for a DJ looking to save space but mostly they’re good for me working at home.

Re: Sugru, do you keep it in the fridge/freezer? The packaging recommends that to extend its shelf life, so I've been keeping mine in a fridge for years now and I pretty much always use packs well past their use-by date (for the same "don't use much" reason you mentioned) without noticing any issues. I believe that's also suggested in the Technical Data Sheet, which I recently discovered via Pimoroni's website :) (Possibly the most marketing/consumer-sounding "technical" data sheet I've ever read, but hey!) Though it might help that I have a fridge in my bedroom/workspace, so I'm not hoarding Sugru with food :) That fridge was originally for cold drinks since my bedroom is 2 floors up from the kitchen - and also traps all the heat - but these days it's also home to a fair amount of Sugru and a few syringes of solder paste! (Is bismuth better than lead for being around food? 🤔)

I've been using Sugru for years but only recently heard about refrigerating it (via another comment here), I'll definitely try it in future. Thanks for the comments!

Hi Seb, are there any class 2 lasers on the market with similar functionality? Also, what spec XY Galvos are LaserCube using? Thanks!
@seblee
@seblee 2 жыл бұрын
Even a laser pointer is class 3 so it wouldn’t really work as a class 2! I would guess the scanners on v1 were rated for 20kpps, they’re not great but fine for simple stuff

Do you think you could remove the e-stop bypass plug and hardwire that inside the cube so you don't have that large dongle hanging off? Wonder if that work would work. Also wonder if I could do that on my 2.5W Pro!
@seblee
@seblee 2 жыл бұрын
You could but then you would no longer have the option of an external stop button, and you should always use one if you're lasering outside your own home

I just switch the Cube into firmware development mode to override the interlock when I am playing with it in my room, having to pull all the E-Stop bs out of the bag every time is annoying 🤷‍♂️ I switch it back before using it in public though as that would be illegal. Not sure if that works on the USB version though I only know how to do it on the Wi-Fi version.

In America we have to have a long cord with a giant stop button and another key set. All you have is the little silver thing. Can you tell me the pin out on that please. I just only use mine at home as well. I don't mind the key set on the cube But the giant stop button and cable are very cumbersome.
