In this video I provide a brief explanation of two of the most common types of lasers; direct diode lasers and diode-pumped solid-state (DPSS) lasers. If you have any questions at all, feel free to email me at LaserFocusYT@gmail.com and be sure to subscribe to see more amazing laser videos!

This makes so much sense, I actually was wondering about why would anyone use DPSS given their inefficiencies. At my work we use them for the manufacturing of medical devices, but ours are 355nm UV, so that’s probably why they’re used as opposed to a direct diode given that they’re might not be a direct diode option for that wavelength. Thanks for the video!

Another significant difference: direct diode lasers can often be pulsed in the Megahertz range, while DPSS lasers will struggle to operate even in the kilohertz range.

we really need your content rite now! With the quarantine and all the chaos going on.... lasers are a nice distraction. And more powerful green lasers are coming out all the time... dangerous for sure. And people need to be educated. You have one of the only high-quality laser related channels on all of KZfaq. And I think your viewership could skyrocket with regular content posts. I’ve been meaning to ask you a question… I’ve been gathering the parts to build a new green pointer. I have dozens of green lasers around 100mW, but I’ve been wanting something stronger. Was planning to start out with 200mW and then build a 1000mw after. But it doesn’t seem to be economical Because I already got a great deal on a 1 watt 520nm NDG7475 laser diode. And have dozens of modules, hosts, batteries, etc....… after considering the cost for the diode and the driver… The laser will cost me around $100 to build. Which is nearly the same amount to build a 200mW version. There are nice high-quality 200mW modules sold by a few reputable sellers on eBay. They are $40-$60 with high-quality drivers and glass lenses. Already pressed into a heavy brass module and ready to go. But at five times less powerful..... and costing nearly $100 to build. I feel like I should go straight for the 1 watt? I feel foolish building a 200mW laser that would cost me nearly the same amount. I love sanwu and other high-quality pointers… And would have no issues purchasing several... but I love to build my own things and I wouldn’t enjoy such an expensive pointer… Being afraid I would scratch it. And knowing the same amount of investment could’ve built me several very nice powerful pointers for the price paid for that one manufactured unit. However with my own builds.... I’ll make it look rustic and vintage. Like a 200-year-old laser blaster weapon discovered in the pyramids in Egypt or somewhere… LOL In a beautiful patinaed and aged brass housing, with the nickel plating worn through.... and rustic green corrosion in all the right places. It only gets more beautiful with use! like a beautiful nautical tool, compass, or sextant on a pirate ship 200 years ago. With a gently aged and warm vintage look, I’m not afraid to use or scuff it up. Would love your input. And Hope to see more frequent videos from you. Maybe some DIY stuff!

Thank you for the kind words!! I have actually never built my own laser before, so I'm probably not the biggest help :( I've always wanted to though... maybe someday soon!

Nice video, you explained it really well. But you need to post a promo for this channel on your main channel because not enough people are benefiting from the work you’re putting into this channel.

Great video. I'm currently learning about the lasers themselves, however, is it possible to expand on the industrial uses of DPSS lasers? Such as their purpose in spectroscopy for example? Keep up the good work, you have a new subscriber.

It is a great video, thank you. I want to ask why do we see the laser diode beam circular from a distance, even though it is elliptical when it exits from the source in the pointer which use laser diode directly??

Do you know why UV lasers are typically infrared converted to uv when using a blue diode would have an initial closer wavelength

All very good, but using a bathroom to compare a diode and DPSS pointer? LOL, I guess no one can say you were not being safe to others around you.... One thing you could have mentioned at the end is DPSS lasers have superior beam characteristics compared to most laser diodes, but you did mention LD's are usually rectangle shaped and not as narrow, I believe?

hello, can you tell me the cheapest way of getting a small spot on a maximun distance? I want to build a IR laser, that can pop ballons on long range therefore i need very low divergence...the g8 lens is supposed to give the best range, however i dont know if a beamexpander would be better but it seems they are costly.

Could you explain Single Mode and Multimode Diods in comparsion?
@Haarschmuckfachgeschafttadpole
@Haarschmuckfachgeschafttadpole 6 ай бұрын
Single mode produces a tight beam dot while multimode has both axis of the diode diverging at different speeds. In a multimode diode one axis will diverge much faster producing a thin line beam pattern. FAC (fast axis collimation) uses a fiber optic lens to slow down the fast axis producing a square beam pattern.
