It honestly trips me out that this was just the normal way of bars! I was a gymnast for years and the idea of doing any low-high/high-low transitions or any giants or attempting dismounts building momentum in a contained area just makes me nervous! I guess that’s what makes them so amazing though!

Several things come to mind watching this: 1) I'm so glad the bars are further apart and young ladies aren't slamming their still developing bodies against them anymore. 2) the CoP has destroyed any creativity in UB routines. No unique mounts, as they're not worth the risk. No clever bar switches- paks and van leeuweens all day every day. 3)the Chinese and Russians are truly something special with bar work. 4) Daniela Silivas was a BEAST. Of these, Ma Yanhong and he Kexin were the most thrilling to watch. Know Khorkina is the gymnast many love to hate, but she did have the most wonderful extension and elegance. I was present in 2012 and not overwhelmed by Aliya Mustafina's routine - then came the utter brilliance of that dismount which got me to my feet in applause. Still love it today.

Say what you will but Sveta just oozes 'Diva' in the best way possible😂😂. When she accepts her 2000 gold medal and flowers, she moves like an actress accepting an award: she doesn't wait for the handshake and kiss; she initiates it. Almost as if she's saying; "thank you dear Sir you are most kind. Now, move along and get out of my light!" Edit: You KNOW she said "Spasiba" for effect when she stuck that landing, for effect. Always aware of the camera.

There are only so many things you can do on UB After a while, the possibilities run out to get the high DV. Do you remember that worlds where almost every routine was the same and there was a 4way tie? Even the gymnasts laughed it off. Agree with you on the old days! Not just the flexibility but also, the emphasis on form! The positions in the air where so clean and there was room for a bit of 'flair' and so many more stuck landings, too.
