YES, finally someone else liked the plot haha. I thought it was different in tone but the beats were there. The ending is also even a bit of a mockery of the big traditional magic showdown. I loved it. Abercrombie's plots get better and better and I wish more people recognized it.

The last argument of kings is funny in it's own way though. Like Bayaz running away from the Home of Maker, leaving Yulwei sealed inside forever. Is totally funny in the most dark way. Imagine Gandalf while fighting the Balrog, is just like, "whoever is the fastest won't get eaten." As he srpints away in a foot race with midgets? I was dying.

I agree... This is very much a journey before destination story. I was completely thrown by the end as well... But I loved that it came from out of nowhere. The more I think on it the better it gets. I'm excited to see where the circle of the world goes from here! 👍 EDIT: round of applause to youtube for changing my notification settings... Because of that I missed the livestream😠

I just finished the trilogy tonight, and I really enjoyed it, but the only problem I have is the villains get 0 time in 3 books. I love villains, the dude in the North, Bethard, has like 2 pages, and Khalul isn't even in it, I was shocked, But besides that I loved this, The characters are unforgettable, I'm excited to continue reading the series

I remember reading this book series over a decade ago and loving it and loving the story. I also remember Joe Abercrombie appearing on UTV to interview George RR Martin on his book series and him just completely fanboying over him. How George had inspired him. At the time I didn't understand because I hadn't heard of Martin or read his books and Game of thrones hadn't been released on TV. So the interview was jarring but stuck with me and was part of the reason I read a song of ice and fire series. The other part being the 1st season of game of thrones was being advertised everywhere.

Was that a Kookaburra in the background? 😂 Great review! Your thoughts are similar to mine, but the ending was satisfying to me. It felt real and raw. I'm excited for the standalones and The Age of Madness!

Very subversive ending. Loved it. Prince of Nothing is another great trilogy if you want more grimdark.

Okay even though my knowledge on this series is fairly limited; if you like the focus on characters then I’m sure that you will adore the gentlemen bastard series. It is criminal fantasy and has an emphasis on the two main characters, Locke and Jean.

Loving it! Just finishing The Heroes book. Another great story that lets you get a too-intimate perspective on some of the favorite characters. Reality check, anybody? 🥲

You should get your Father to read this series as well! It's nice seeing how different generations with different but similar circumstances view works.

OR, maybe bring him in with the Age Of Madness trilogy. It'll be finished this year. He continues to grow as an author. I didn't think it was possible but his new series blows this one out of the water, and this series is AMAZING

You wait for the standalones, i read Best Served Cold and The Heroes so far and they are so good. btw talking about the magic, go look up the wiki now you finished the whole trilogy. (dont look up characters but just other things like magic: firstlaw.fandom.com/wiki/Magic ) after reading this series i did not understand half of it but the wiki page really clearified things for me. After the magic page look up the order of the magi firstlaw.fandom.com/wiki/Order_of_the_Magi (again dont look up characters just the worldbuilding things)

For me, the whole trilogy was almost ruined because of the ending to this book. Abercrombie has two HUGE f*** you moments to his readers: the conclusion to the journey out west in book 2, and the conclusion to the trilogy. If these were emotions that Abercrombie wanted us to feel, then he did his job. They aren't emotions I want to feel when I finish a book. There was also a character reveal in book 3 that was a disappointment for me. I realize that it had been foreshadowed throughout the books, but the execution of it felt so elementary. Journey before Destination is an oath I keep coming back to when I think of FIrst Law, but the destination was so miserable that it lessened everything leading up to it. p.s. I'm a big fan of your content. Keep it up!
@LostinDiscovery3 жыл бұрын
I totally feel what you're saying! The end of the journey in book 2 didn't bother me so much, I found it pretty funny. The ending of some plot lines in book 3 were certainly massive downers for me though. Thank you man!
@papige0ne3 жыл бұрын
I think the problem with the book is that you have so little insight into what is going on with 'bad guys'. But still, it is the best fantasy I read in a long long time.

The situation with Jezals wife was very realistic except in real life she would have been taken by force no questions asked. The situation that is f*ed is called "hereditary monarchy" where marriage and sex serve politics and the state. An heir is a necessity or countless lives can be lost in a civil war. It's royal family's duty to produce one (or better yet, more than one just in a case). So the system is f*ed up beyond belief, but Glokta working within that system was absolutely right to blackmail the spoiled queen to achieve what was necessary. What's the more disturbing for me personally is that lots of people nowadays still think hereditary monarchy is (or was) great.
