The final episode of M*A*S*H was quite an event. I was in college at the time, and some instructors canceled their classes the night it aired so their students could watch. I watched at home with my mom, grandpa and a friend. We readied the popcorn and sat glued to the TV for 2 1/2 hours. There were even a few tears shed during the final "Goodbye" scene. Suffice to say there will never be another TV program like this. True classic!

@@kendallrivers1119 I guess I watched both, but, aged 55, I can only recall watching the M*A*S*H finale (I have watched it enough times since then to have large sections of the script memorized without special effort). The 4077th wins that contest in my book on that basis.

The final episode of MASH filmed was this one, but the "Goodbye, Farewell, and Amen" movie was shown as the last episode. Truly, the end of MASH was the event of the '82-83 season, and it will live on as one of the major Television events of our time! Thanks for the posting...

One of the reasons I loved and in some ways hated this show, I was assigned to a MASH unit and it was almost a carbon copy of my experience. Overall I really enjoyed the series. I could remember alot of individuals in my unit that were like some of these characters, especially Radar. There wasn't a alphabetic form our company clerk didnt know or regulation he couldn't cite! And yes! there's no MASH unit complete without a Frank Burns. We had one too! Never will be another show like this!
@canadianfortrump4057

That's a testament to how excellent MASH was if as you say it was a carbon copy of your own experience. The only thing I found unrealistic about the show was the Frank Burns character. I don't see how any person that dim witted could ever have made it as a surgeon. Hopefully the person similar to Frank Burns in your unit wasn't a surgeon.

I can remember watching the very episode where Potter showed up. Back in 1975 i believe. After having basically grown up with Henry Blake and going through all the sadness of him leaving it seemed the show was rudderless. When Potter showed up i didn't like him at all. But that was just old emotion for the previous character. I gave Potter a chance and i found i actually liked Harry Morgan BETTER than Mclean. A very caring person and that grew on me.

I converted my wife to a MASH fan recently, we watched the entire box set together and I finally realized why MASH was a good show that will never be replicated, I came to this moment of clarity on the episode where Radar leaves the show..... the show ended and I said to my wife, "I hope Radar found that girl he left at the airport" That statement made me realize that MASH had the ability to connect with its audience in a way that no show today will ever do. The characters had such a presence that convinced the viewer that these were real people. No T.V. drama today would ever be able to make me think twice about the characters outside of the show. It is a shame that television viewers will never see a show of this caliber again.

That is so true. I think what really made that connection was the letters and films from home. They were real people with kids, spouses, or moms and dads back in the states. The writers did a great job of putting everyday life in the script and the actors did an excellent job of making you feel their joys and sorrows.

You just have to look at "After MASH" to see how tacky it can be. The only way they could pull this off now is to have Alan Alda working as a doctor in Maine, and receive letters from his "Son" Hawkeye.

I hate remakes, but i always thought I could have lived with the M*A*S*H movie versions of all of the characters, in the series. I thought Sutherland was a good Hawkeye in his own way , and I thought Sally Kellerman and Robert Duval were a great Frank and Margaret. So , maybe a successful remake would be possible, if they hit bullseye on casting.

To watch a group of true professionals working their craft, and especially showing the "family" that they had become in the way they react to trying to film these scenes, is a joy to behold. I grew up in the 70’s, so I grew up watching MASH. One of my top two all time shows, ever. The characters that left the show were replaced by better one's. My favorites were BJ and Dr. Freedman. I read that they offered Alan Arbus a full-time job after Larry Linville left but apparently Alan didn't want the grind of a sitcom week to week. He was happy with Dr. Freedman's part-time gig. IMO that is the only way that MASH series could've improved, if Dr. Freedman became the 3rd doctor bunking in the SWAMP. As for Radar, Gary playing a 19 year old was never convincing. I think he was 30 when he started the series. That was really the only thing that ever seemed out of place on the seires. I never knew that he had a left hand deformity until I read about it long after the show had ended. I read that after Mclean Stevenson's multiple failed attempts at starring in another series he finally realized that the public wasn't enamored with Mclean, it was Henry Blake who the public loved. I guess he was the last one to know. I never cared much for Blake or Burn's. The show improved with their replacements. BJ's integrity and devotion as a father and a husband was inspiring. Incidently, my other top all time favorite show is NYPD Blue. Thank you for posting this video.

This is one of those rare instances where BOTH the original Film and the TV Series are both excellent. They really both had their own personalities. The TV Series was a huge part of my childhood, but when I got older, I watched the movie. It's really set the tone for the humor or the series, but the Series really added the heart. I'm glad we have both.

I see why I loved this show the WAY I did. It had all the makings of a family. A family that came together through good times as well as bad. I had nothing but bad growing up.5 foster homes ,being homeless with dad and 4 other brothers as we journeyed across the USA 8 times looking and searching for some way to keep surviving. We all came out of the dysfunction in 1990. The last episode ..was just too much for me. My other M*A*SH family was breaking up too and going their separate ways. I cried. ,by myself. And still today, I watch any episode that can make me feel included just for 30 minutes.I'm now a dad, married 26yrs, and have 2 sons and 2 grandchildren. I'm a radar/pierce type by the way. I guess it was M*A*S*H that kinda taught me just what a family is like.

Sincerest congratulations on making it despite the odds. Yeah, I find family "elsewhere" too....now over the hump of 50, I can have "moments" with those who by blood or law or experience are in various ways "my family", but it was a long road, and well too late for me to think about one of my own. I've been surprised and delighted to find other current shows out there that still do for me what MASH did and does for so many, so I'm not quite as down on the present and future as some...

I love this series and I believe that a MASH channel would be great. The show shows what people need. What should be going on in the world. Humanity is something you don't see and most people don't get. Caring, understanding, loving, both as person and in feelings. MASH hits on issuses that you can't help to think that if the world was like the show maybe it would be a better place. I own two copies and I watch it all the time when I'm sad, depressed, or life just is too much for me. It helps.

RIP David O Stiers. In addition to his terrific portrayal of Major Winchester, he directed several episodes, and those episodes showed an understanding that every episode didn't need to be a dissertation on the evils of the US military or a ham handed attempt to display a feminist sensibility, as some of his cast mates did when they got behind the camera.

You just cant find that many cast members who could work together so effortlessly, for so many years and continue to produce such a high quality of writing and acting. It's such a rare thing for TV today. Six Feet Under had it. So did Lost. Now The Walking Dead fills the void. But still, when I watch an episode of M*A*S*H, I smile, I laugh, and I cry.

Well, Happy Trails kind sir. ~ Love, Miss M*A*S*H. (That was what they all called me) Even Charlie Dubin, he "adopted" me cause he knew I would watch out for his 2 'lil dogs on set. They were mom 'n daughter & Charles Loved them dearly. Well, TTFN.... "Lived" defined= I Resided in "The Swamp Tent!" You know, OD Green canvas, stake pole in the middle holds it up, door with small window & screen. Maybe you never saw the show, Hawkeye & BJ only pretended to live in there, for the TV show. I actually resided, dwelt, lived in "The Swamp Tent" for 365 days a year for the last 5 years of the show. If your curious,, it was filmed on "The Fox Ranch" bought by the State of Ca. The State calls it: "Malibu Creek State Park" It is located in Agoura, Ca. Up the hills from Malibu Beach. Well kind sir ~ Happy Trails... Most Sincerely, Miss M*A*S*H ~

Carol E. Johnson Is this metaphorical? Why would anyone live in a set in a studio for five years, and how would the production company have allowed it? Sounds way, way out there.

I was a kid when this show ended and didn't understand the adult content but laughed at the pratfall humor, but now as an adult who served in the military I laugh even more no matter how small the nuances within the show. Sometimes military life can be a little harsh but thats the life we signed up to do. This is the greatest show to ever air even with some of the anti-military propaganda.

We had 2 tv's in our house in the 80's-the color one in the lounge room and a crappy tiny black and white one in a small bedroom. Every week night Mum and us kids would crowd into that small bedroom and watch MASH, while Dad sat alone watching Sale of The Century. Good times.

I´m thinking that Mash its the best tv comedy ever aired on tv. Its was like two years ago i started watching Mash reruns on swedish tv and i fell in love with the show so i recently bougth the dvd box and i took me like 3 weeks to watch it from the very beginning to the end. My favourite caracter on the show is Hawkeye/BJ and Dr Sidney Freedman! And Wayne Rogers may you rest in peace.

There are few shows that achieve such longevity and popularity across such a wide audience as MASH. Shows like NCIS, Supernatural, Dr Who, all have their audiences (I'm a fan off all of these) but MASH reached more people in it's time than any other show. I'm not talking about initial viewership, but the literal generations that have grown up with this in their lives.

MASH was/is humanity wrapped in comedy. The final episode was like a bereavement. It doesnt suprise me MASH continues to convert new generations of admirers. In the 70s it was my classroom for 1/2 hour every week where i learned about human nature, its colours, its textures, its contradictions, compassion, weaknesses, its family. MASH didnt so much make me laugh (though there are many classic moments) but make me smile and hopeful. A smile lasts longer than a laugh, and that was/is MASH.
