Trumpeters performed the Last Post and Reveille at the service. The State Trumpeters of The Household Cavalry sounded both calls. It was the Cavalry version of calls sounded.
The trumpeters played on the steps of th Lady Chapel, and were led by Trumpet Major Julian Sandford.

The trumpet awakens...calls attention to heed an important moment..leads a charge into battle...maybe sounds a retreat..maybe shows the will of a nation or leader or army as it faces the end..Garryowen for Custer comes to mind..and the trumpet signals royalty..the idea of somthing greater than ourselves to aspire to..to carry us over the sharpened pikes of humanities rough edges and more base concerns. And the trumpet lays to rest..the fallen private as well as the Queen of England. It sounds the Last Post. Its dignity can only be followed..for a moment anyway...by silence. RIP Queen Elizabeth..who showed an entire planet that statesmenship can never be disconnected ftom service. Leaders the world over could use this reminder.

It was the Cavalry Last Post and Revelle.....which is different to the army and Royal Navy's. The RAF use the army version, as they were apart of the army until the change to RAF.

I haven't heard that British swing in a while. Murphy used the swing if you listen closely to Appalachian Spring and even Superman.

It is filled with soul, sorrow and pain. For the loss, for the grief, for the closing, for the memory, a setting sun and a peaceful end. You’re not expected to understand but you should realise your opinion is irrelevant.

Both calls are the Trumpet variations of Last Post And Reveille. This is exactly how they’re notated in the Army Trumpet and Bugle Calls For the British Army Handbook. The first one which was last post for Trumpet is known as Watch Setting Last Post. And the second one is the Trumpet equivalent of Reveille. I happen to have the book which was given to me by my old Boys’ Brigade captain. I myself am a Bugler and am used to playing the Last Post And Reveille at funerals and the annual Remembrance Sunday parades. When I play it I play it with feeling at funerals,but during Remembrance Sunday parades I play as written. The Queen will have left strict instructions as to how she wanted everything doing. It will have been planned meticulously

No one amongst these comments seems to have tumbled to the fact that this is most definitely not the "Last Post"! It bears no relation to the bugle call played at every service of Remembrance and at Prince Philip's funeral. It's a completely different fanfare! The question is - what was played at the Queen's funeral in place of the "Last Post"? The "Last Post" begins with two rising fifths played slowly, with the second note of each held. Then there's another rising fifth, then the next pitch is the octave, then the 10th, then down to the fifth, then up to the 12th, 10th, octave, 12th, 10th, octave and the 5th again. This one is the 5th, octave, 5th, 10th, octave, 5th. It bears no relation. I cannot believe there are two completely different bugle calls sharing the name the "Last Post".

you appear to be unaware that there are different versions of the last post and reveille. This one hear is the cavalry version, it is played on an E flat cavalry trumpet The one you are familiar with, is played on a B flat bugle. It is, as you say, a different piece. The State trumpeters belong to a cavalry regiment, they are the Queen's trumpeters...... who announce the monarch on official occasions. They were there at her wedding, at all her appearances in Parliament and of course, at her funeral.

@grahamnicholson2481

it no doubt lost it's meaning for you, because you are probably confusing it with 'Taps or something.' This is a different tradition, these are cavalry trumpeters, the Queen's personal state trumpeters. They announce the monarch. There were there at her wedding, at every appearance in Parliament and of course, at her funeral. It had considerable meaning for those of us who understood how it fits into centuries of tradition.

@@An-Alien-On-Earth you are obviously not aware that the cavalry has their last post and the navy and artillery and infantry have a different last post [ and reveille]. This is played on a cavalry trumpet in E flat, the other one is played on a B flat bugle, a completely different instrument These players are the state trumpeters whose job is to announce the presence of the Queen, they were there at her wedding, they were there at every state opening of Parliament and of course, they were there at her funeral.
