Back then, there were quite a percentage of the people with optimism for the future, perhaps maintaining the lifestyle under Chinese rule, with a degree of sovereignty greater than under the rule of the UK. It turned out quite too naive after all.

The strange thing is everyone loves Highland Cathedral as a traditional tune, amazingly it was written by a couple of Germans back in the ‘70s.

Good old Chris Patten, the keenest, most honourable man I have ever known. He gave all for Hong Kong. He accomplished much against all sides, including a community identity of being a "Hongkonger." What was lost that day? Clean, light-handed government, a clean police force, civil servants of the highest probity, and courts that followed the Rule of Law and basic human rights. HONGKONGERS, take courage!! Tyrants can not stand the light of day, and never last against people of free will.

The pleasure is all mine, my friend, as I hope it's alright to know you... any admirer of Wellesley is a good man, after all! As the world was reminded in a brilliant way in 2014, the struggle of Hongkongers everywhere is the struggle of all of us everywhere. Totalitarian Leninists have never come back after they fall. In the big view, the PRC is only the last example. But it would be a huge mistake to confuse democracy, human rights, and the Rule of Law in HK with a HK Nation State. To argue that now just gives ammunition to those would destroy the dream completely. God protect the people of Hong Kong! God save the Queen!

After several years. News: Today, in Glasgow, a great ceremony is held to celebrate the independence of Scotland! Thousands of Scottish people gathered and sang "The Flower of Scotland" and "Scotland the Brave"(But no "God save the KING"!). The Union Jack slowly went down and the cross of Saint Patrick slowly went up... There may be people saying something like "R.I.P United Kingdom From the period that Anglo-Saxons drove the Celtic to Scotland Highland to 2030 (since the history of Britain is the history of being invaded by one after one barbarian, we just suppose its history starts at the period Anglo-Saxons, which is the ancestors of the majority of England, drove the Celtic people who are supposed to be the owner of Britain to Highland) We miss our country, we believe she will come back..."

Christ Lau I’m English but even I know it’s the cross of St. Andrew, the Cross or Saltire of St. Patrick was used to represent Ireland by the loyalist factions in the country while the nationalists used the harp and later the tricolour.

You can see how depressing the moment is just by Chris Patten's face. His administration brought so much changes to make sure Hong Kongers enjoy the liberties other countries have, even pushing it too far by fully democratising the LegCo (against UK and China's advice and consultation). Thats how much he cared for HK.

The best rendition of Highland Cathedral bar none--and I don't mean that political implications, but the counter-melody was done at a very good level and balanced out the bagpipes extremely well: giving the tune the added martial depth.

Whenever playing highland cathedral, a mixed feeling comes and fill with tears, thankful to british gave us a democractic society and sad about the circumstance we are currently facing in hk, injustice and politically control economy to have enterprise to kneel down for communist. @@zaldygallardojr.322 No a buffer state is a nation that borders the home nation. France acts as a buffer sate for Germany protecting it from Spain. Although no one would call it a buffer state. Hong Kong could not act as a buffer state for reasons I am sure you can figure out. A dependent state is a state that does not have full possess full political independence but is still outside of the main political body of the parent nation. Thank you for correcting my spelling. It has never been my strong suit to say the least.

+alan mac The course of time and a change in values is the catalyst, not a failure on our part. We actually were able to delay it for nearly 2 score. Empires arose in the early 1900s' and were obsolete by its end. A colony would have been out of place in the modern world. Sooner or later, we will bid farewell to our overseas territories and dependencies as well. At least we can look back at our accomplishments with tremendous pride and revel in the Commonwealth which is held together by will, rather than by force.

So, the British didn’t intentionally get the Chinese addicted to opium, the Chinese didn’t blow up an opium shipment and the British didn’t use that as an excuse to invade and force China to sign over Hong Kong? And the Chinese didn’t rebel? Wow, history is so wrong. The British are good guys! They didn’t invade Africa, Middle East, India, Singapore, Canada, Australia, North America, parts of South America. cococly Fair enough. However, the only reason Hong Kong was British for 156 years was because of the Opium Wars. The 99 year lease was up, you want to keep Hong Kong forever, then fight another war with China and see who wins in this generation.

The 99-year lease was only for the New Territories, and it didn't include Kowloon and Hong Kong Island. 100% of the juridical and legislative systems and the government structure are from the British, and we still use it. It's not just merely a 150+ years ago conflict that gave birth to Modern Hong Kong. I couldn't imagine if I am under the CCP rule, and I wouldn't be able to discuss this issue with you. Did you know Hong Kong Passport has MUCH more rights to travel aboard (Visa Free) than the PRC Passport? What implications could you think of that caused this? People inside Hong Kong wouldn't want to fight, nor would the British. Only people in the PRC would want to destroy Hong Kong in order to take Hong Kong back.

LOL "China could cutting water supply", as if the water supply was FREE, which it isn't and never has. We paid hundreds of billions of HKD already to China (Brotherhood, right?), for China to build even the basic modern infrastructure for their own cities in Canton. It's not Brotherhood, it's merely business. Have you ever visited Hong Kong and China? Did you know the CCP limits the movement of its people? They need VISA to LEAVE China to visit other countries/Hong Kong/Macau. China is great right now? why are most of the higher officials have their family already residing in North America? Some even fled the countries entirely. Xi's Family was living in the US before 2012. Xi's Cousins, and Nephews have US Green Cards. Yes, China is so good indeed, government officials would wanna leave. No need to argue with you. We wouldn't change each other view. I suggest you to immigrate to the PRC, forgoing your current nationality.

A little known fact is that the CCP (successfully) had HK and Macao removed from the UN list of decolonisation just after they replace Taiwan on the UN. The the basis was that both were “integral parts of China”. Hence the right to self determination from the UN’s perspective didn’t exist.

UK, though took HK with ugly means (Opium war), has turned Hk from a small village into one of the 3 most important cities in the world. Somehow, despite the fact that Hk is "just" a colony, has been well raised and properly nurtured, one must agree that the invasion of Britain is kind of a gift not only to Hk, but also for China. Without Hk, the original China would completely vanish culturally. And the economy growth would never have been so rapid as well. I think that's what we call 塞翁失馬焉知非福 in Chinese

30th June 1997 i was 6 years old watching this on my grandparents tv, little was i to know that This was the day that British Honour finally rolled over and died its final death now almost 24 years latter the situation is heart breaking

Honour had nothing to do with it. The lease on the New territories was up and Hong Kong Island couldn't function without them because they had the water and power supplies. China also threatened to take HK by force if necessary and it would have been impossible for the UK to defend it.

HM RHKP and APF did an excellent job and made huge contributions to Hong Kong. Towards the end of British rule, the RHKP did all of the ceremonial duties one might expect from the Queens Guard back home, like the annual Birthday Honours (which Governors handle in the colonies). Lance Brown was the last colonial ADC to Mr. Patten seen here. Chris Patten refused to wear the colonial uniform, but Mr. Brown, whom I believe was a police PPO, was stuck with the Sun Hat with Emu feathers.

HK should have been given a referendum on its future...and then people so should have decided whether it stayed with UK or joined China. Chime would have been furious...but I think the UN would have backed that, and with the UNs backing, China wouldn't have been able to do anything

Hong Kong is militarily indefensible against a rising China, that's why it would not have been helpful for Britain to hold a referendum or leave any room for debate over Hong Kong's future status.

What we see in this video wasn’t the end of British rule in Hong Kong or the end of the British Empire which many watching at the time thought it was. In fact what this really was was the end of Hong Kong. Most people just didn’t realise it at the time. This was Hong Kongs funeral before falling into the dark tyrannical abyss of the PRC and having its soul ripped out. Take heed Taiwan for you may be next !

Hong Kong was the last British Overseas Territory with significant population and economy. The handover of Hong Kong practically ended the British Empire. That why, perhaps, they played "The Last Post" in this ceremony.

Leasing was for a part of the territory, mainland HK was perpetual transfer before those territories, but given how the whole territory developed, it became too complicated to return that part. The only sure fact is that they were not 100% morally obligated to return it, it was very debatable, and they did without any objection. That's honourable.

+Hans Gruber Just how would have accomplished that? Britain is a nation who has always kept its word of honour. Could we have fought a war over 6 square miles and had any chance of winning? What would the rest of the world have thought of the UK? No, it was time to let go. The only option in this vein would have been to remove the entire population, and then applied a "scortched earth" to it. However, the monetary effect on the world's economy would have been devasting.

Be it what it may ... the British are superior when it comes to music (bagpipes won the Empire for the British :p) and grand ceremonies. The Chinese do many things in a "grand" scale, but lack style and meaningfulness. This ceremony truly marks the end of the British Empire.
