It must be nice to live where the weather allows you to garden this time if year. I live in Cleveland and we're still a good 2.5 months away from frost free gardening, but thanks to cold frames and hoop houses i have started my first round of cabbage and lettuce seedlings today . Greats vids keep it up.

I was lucky the weather cooperated and allowed me to prepare the seed beds so well. It is usually a struggle at this time of the year with all the rain. We got over 2 inches yesterday and last night...... Donald

My goal is to plant enough for our use and the rest is sold to help pay some of the expenses of growing the garden. When I have extras I simply roll a sign out at the end of the driveway and folks stop and buy fresh vegetables right out the garden...... Donald

The 2.5 inch model allows you to transplant onions and plant plugs or plants in 2.5 inch peat pots. It is a lot easier on the back and works best with 2 people planting, one jabbing and one feeding the plants in the tube. I guess it depends on how much planting you do to justify the cost…..Donald

How often to water really depends on your soil and drying conditions at the time. Best way to figure out if you need to water is dig down a few inches and check for moisture…..Donald

@bamaduckhunter ...I found that cutting the tops off the transplants gets them going a little sooner. No, the ones I didn't transplant we allow to grow naturally......Donald

Maybe you should try a few plants in containers inside the house. A window facing the south should give you all the sunlight you need...... Donald

That Hatfield transplanter sure is nice, Don! Looks a lot easier than me crawling down the row on all fours, making dibbles, and pushing a flat on a skid ahead of me. :-( I'll bet it's a joy to use! rc

They were nice, about 2-3 times larger than the ones I had been buying online. Started growing again as soon as I transplanted them...... Donald

@buffalopatriot ... I plant my seeds in the fall and let em grow through the winter. Around February or March I'll dig up the plants and transplant (spacing them out 6-8 inches apart) if the weather allows of course. This year it's been raining a lot and I can't get in the garden to till and row up for the transplants. If it does dry up I'll dig em up and plant the bulb part about 1 inch deep. Glad you enjoy the videos.......The Professor LOL

@skullgymequipment ... sorry no video. My advice would be to stick with a brand name tractor such as John Deere, Ford, Case/IH, Kubota, etc. to make sure parts are available. Something as simple as an oil / air filter can be hard to find for some of these off brand or gray market tractors...... Donald

Donald, I love your videos. My wife and I devide or time bewtween our home in Houston, TX and our property in the hill country. My back yard here in Houston is my garden. Haven't started one in the hill country yet. My wife calls you my twin though I am a little taller. Would love to drive over to your place when you have your next get together!

@DesertDigger1 ... they make something you may want to look into, it's call a "Row Builder". They have a single blade on each side and work pretty well. Easy to pull and not very heavy......... Donald

@flatheadcat4u ... that's a real good harvest. Onions take a long time to mature and some folks just harvest too soon. Got to let em grow........Donald

I did about a half dozen of em since starting the seeds. After all that planting I am getting tired, need a rest. LOL ...... Donald

Here's a tip for ya...transplant 3 onions per hole instead of 1, and space em out 10" apart instead of 5-6". They still grow well and it's less transplanting and digging/harvesting work!

If I had to guess all 160 of your onions will make it. You can throw an onion bulb on top the ground and go back a couple of weeks later and it will be growing. Stand it up, throw a little dirt around it and youll have an onion in about 3 months...... Donald

When I planted the seed they were planted real close together so I could get the most bang for the space. It would be extremely difficult to space out each seed and expect each one to come up. In a future update I'll show you what happens when you try thinning onions. Well look at this way, living north of me means you know what's coming. If you see something you'd like to plant you'll have plenty time to order...... Donald

Donald, Great video as usual. Just curious what the temps are there right now? I am tempted to try and start some onions outside here in Atlanta. We have potential Frost up until April, but this year seems to be alot warmer lately. Daytime highs are in the mid fifties and lows about 37-44.

I don't think I said it in the video, but if you hear me say, "trust me on that" it means I've made that mistake in the past. And you can trust me on that. LOL Imagine the potato row at 300 ft. long getting 5-6 potatoes per foot which would be a below average harvest. How much you think that will come out to? Hi, I dont know what is the name of the Red/black tool you used to make it easier for you to plant the onions in, But I saw how they(farmers) used it in an Korean Entertainment show called Invincible Youth, They actually insert the plant into the tool when the handles are spread apart, then poke on the ground and then close the handles in and pull off the ground, This method might make it easier. It might help you.

AW now Donald your CHEATTING.I planted a 100 foot row of onions my knees and you show that thing.Also I know what you mean on the rain.I had my Garden all nice and tilled and then it rained, now I also have a stock tank right next to my Garden and Lord I get rain and a tank that over runs and it take 3 week for that ground to dry out before I can get back in.

Hi Donald - Your show is like a cup a coffee in the morning or a smooth bourbon by the early evening moonlight, mixed in with the sensibility of advanced university learnin' . I mean that. A question professor: in order for me to get my onions to the bulb stage, I now have to dig them up [they are fully grown] clip them and replant them, making sure to bury only the roots? Is that correct?
