I have hundreds of knives of damned near every type and size. I bought one of those Raptor X machetes at Walmart for under $30 about 5 or 6 years ago. I took it out doing exactly what you’re talking about chopping small trees and branches. After I took it once, it replaced all my other machetes for actually working with it. Even landscaping bushes and low hanging branches around my house. Great grip, not too long or heavy, and that back saw comes in handy from time to time. Very durable, especially for the price!!! Also comes very sharp from the factory. I love it!!! Of course, like most of us who watch this channel… I love all of my knives and guns!!! 😂 Great video!!! Thank You!!!

Where I’m at 🇨🇦 there are a lot of spruce which have dead lower limbs which will poke your eyes out the moment some camp chore demands your full attention. These type of knives are great for clearing these limbs and processing into tinder. I use a Terava Skrama for this since I find slowing down a hatchet on a missed limb gets tricky especially when wet. The Skrama has a blade similar to your El Chete but has a rubber handle with multiple position grip which I have really come to appreciate. The longer blades you have look like they wood be good for clearing tall grass or reeds. I mostly use smaller blades such as a Mora. Stay safe!🦉

If just clearing trails and nothing else - I also would pick the Kershaw out of all of those. Me personally - I carry a Condor Bushcraft Parang 13" blade length (sadly a bit heavy, but all the pros out weigh the cons) for trail clearing partnered with a Bark River Bravo Alpha 3V 5" blade for the other medium/light bush chores. I also carry a Mora Eldris 2.2" blade for the finer things. One day I want to get the Bark River Bravo Machete 1V.

Great to see some more blade content! You should take a look at the OKC RTAK-II. The handle is extremely comfy, the spine is thick, but the blade grind and heavy tang is such that it maintains a really light feel...easy to get good speed with a wrist-flick. It's heavy duty enough to baton some kindling or even small logs, but balanced so well that it doesn't tire you out when you're clearing trails. It also holds an edge like crazy, since it's just good spring steel. Hard to sharpen without specialized tools since the steel is so hard....but you very rarely need to sharpen it. It's been my do-everything trail knife for years now - the handle is the best I've felt, and the 10 inch blade is the perfect balance of long-but-handy. It's the largest member of their RAT series. I think you'd fall in love. It's equally at home trimming branches, batoning firewood, or building a make-shift hunting blind....and the micarta handle is the perfect level of grippy without giving you blisters from a long day's hike.

When I was stationed at Ft. Campbell in the 80’s-90’s in D co. 2/502 INF as an 11H (Anti-Armor Infantryman) each squad/vehicle had a GI issue machete on our hand receipt. We used it daily in the field to chop foliage from trees and bushes to put on our HMMWV’s because we had to keep fresh foliage on it daily because the way we operate is to make the HMMWV look like a rolling bush, we’d use long bungee cords and some 550 cord on the outside of the vehicle to hold the chopped foliage. After a day or two the foliage wilted making it easier to spot us. When we moved forward along a road, we bounded vehicle by vehicle so when we got a couple hundred meters down the road we pulled off the road and parked the HMMWV in the nearest shrubs/bushes to hide as much of the vehicle as possible but ensure that the TOW launcher was able to have a clear line of fire to scan for enemy. Once things were clear of enemy contacts, we’d signal for the rear vehicle to bound past us and we simply repeated that until we reached whatever point we had to secure for the mission. We’d carry a Leatherman Wave knife and often a Gerber strong arm type knife, we rarely took our M9 bayonets to the field, only when we deployed but now, they took the bayonet out of our inventory BUT, some of the men bought their own M9 and carried it which was fine. The Wave was the most important tool we had, I was always using mine and NEVER lend it to someone who takes it out of sight! It’s not that they’re thieves, sometimes things get hot pretty quick and we overlook little things. But if you only had one choice between a bayonet and machete, the medium size “trail knives” he’s showing is a good option, best to have one with some kind of point so you can stab something with it. The problem with a lot of fighting knives is gripping it when it gets blood on it, blood makes everything slippery as hell, that’s why there’s a small lanyard wrist strap/loop to keep your hand from sliding forward onto the blade as you thrust forward.

I am heavily in love with my 1968 Vietnam issue Marmac (I think you'd love it, Ontario doesn't make steel like that anymore!) and my SF Cold Steel shovel. Between those two and my EDC knives, I can pull off most tasks with relative precision and ease. The SF shovel will easily take down small trees, although I reserve the Marmac for most bushwhacking. SF Shovel is also great for taking the heads off bowfin (dogfish) or snakeheads. I won't go to the river without it, they are thick here. Found it interesting to learn that you don't want to sharpen your machetes down to a razor edge, they hold up better with a slight angle grind - Jungle proven, evidently. Found the Marmac abandoned in the woods, sheath and all. I wasn't complaining, added a forced patina and some electrical tape on the handle and it was good to go. Tried $100+ Kukris and et cetera, nothing has been able to beat the Marmac and SF Coldsteel shovel combo. Silky for saws, though - heard they make a top of the line dual-sided machete style blade but don't want to eat the $120 price tag when I already have a great setup.

Yep, for a camp knife where you might be hacking on firewood and such, a heavier blade would be in order, but for taking out smaller limbs and vines and such, it's hard to beat a thinner blade with some length. This coming from somebody who loves heavy-made blades.

Glad to see someone being honest about blades they like, that are not super expensive. There are so many blade snobs out there that think if it doesn’t cost $250 or more that it’s not worth having.

When I lived in Florida I stopped one night to help a person who had a rear tire stuck in a sand hole. After getting him free he pulled what I though a machete out of his car and I though he was about to go Jason on me. Turns out it was not a machete but a Puerto Rican Sugar Cane knife and he gifted it to me for helping him out. Difference between it and a machete is while roughly the same length it has more weight at the head while still being light and easy to use. I used it one night to cut down several dozen 1 to 2 inch diameter saplings to make a 5 foot long by 8 foot wide corduroy road so I could drive my car over a wet sandy area of road where car kept getting stuck. While I no longer live in Florida this knife is a permanent part of my camping gear along with Camilus Knife in this video. i also carry Schrades Survival Shovel which doubles as a hatch and has a saw attachment as well. I like the Schrade so much I stopped carrying my US Army issued tri-fold e-tool, that separated service with me, as part of my gear.

I think the Kershaw is their Camp 10 model. I have one and I use mine every camping trip. It's been great with processing wood down for fires.

I was guessing by the blade shape compared to the camp 10, but after looking closer at the length I agree with the Camp 14. The Camp 18 has the same sheath style, after looking closer in pictures on the Blade HQ site!

The kershaw camp 10 you picked is a solid knife for what you are doing, me being short i prefer a longer machete, i have the kopis machete from cold steel that you have, but the grip is a bit wide for me, one of the ones i use the most is the ontario sp5 survival bowie, thick enough to do light chopping on heavier stuff, but light enough for thin green wood and branches like a machete, for thicker heavier stuff like foot thick trees i use a kabar kukri machete, or a tomahawk.

Really good comparison video. The tobacco chopper is pretty cool. I made one out of a handsaw blade to copy one my father in law's grandfather had. Hickory sapling handle. Handy little chopper.

Thanks, but I'm realizing I don't know much about this class of knives. So many great ones have been mentioned by you all in comments. I think I've been suckered into ordering at least five new ones. :-) No expert here, but I do know what type of blade (weight, size, thickness, etc.) works best for me in trail clearing. I'll definitely have to do a Chapter 2 of this video in about a year. No doubt.

Dad made one similar to the saw back design, right after WWII from an old leaf spring. Versatility being the drive of any proven design, it cost him time, effort, and the limb of a pecan tree which he used to make a handle. Not knocking anything Hickok45 has, shows, or has ever demonstrated - but every man must make his own blade at some point in his life.

I just recently made a good camp/trail knife out of s7 tool steel. So far it's been a really good knife. Not to long not to short. It's a little heavy but when you live in the woods with no vehicle you just figure it out when you need something.

On a hiking trip a few years back a buddy brought along the Camillus machete you featured. We were processing fire wood and within minutes he managed to chip the blade and shortly after broke it entirely. Maybe good for light use, but certainly not for the heavier work. I on the other hand had a Tops 170 machete made out of 1095 high carbon. Never skipped a beat. Light work all the way up to batoning and even chopping small trees down if necessary. Kind of like the El Chete from Tops you featured in this video. Thick blade, heavy, and maybe not all that practical for general use. But absolutely will chop a tree down with no damage to the blade.

Like you and many others I have been after the "perfect" trail/camp knife for many years. A tight budget doesn't help lmao. My 3 main "grab and go" these days are a good heavy schf9 recurve chopper, a handy Gerber freeman for most work, and a stupid short tanto machete I hate to love but has literally been through everything for 5, 10 years. Frost made those "ninja" back carry machetes, big one was trash even new (I was 14 lemme lone) but the short one got reground and re heat treated. Now it's been hammered and abused and never let me down, very compact and light compared to my regular yard machete or heavy chopper.
