As you crossed the hollow ponds there was a wide ditch filled with water. I think this was the River Holt which was cut off when the railway cutting was dug. This might be the reason why Gilbert's Slade is always so wet. It is no longer drained by the amputated River Holt.

Thank you so much John. Please keep yourself and your dear family safe. I hope that your next walk won’t be too long away. I’ve just bought a bike and so my 11yr old daughter and I try to get out for a ride and sit by our local lake for the 1hr we’re allowed out. Nature has been so healing for us right now.

Greetings John from Prince Edward County, Ontario. I grew up in Walthamstow, in the old village, on Orford Road opposite the ‘Ancient House’ and then lived in Woodford before crossing the Pond. I absolutely love your walks, they take me back and bring back many fond memories. While living in Woodford back in the 70s and 80s I worked for London Walks, doing the Ghost Walks, Jack the Ripper, Sherlock Holmes, Dickens etc and I must applaud you for your work ( but it’s never work if it’s fun) you are a great guide and I look forward to re viewing your back catalogue. Brilliant stuff, just what we need in these times. And when I get back ‘home’ the first beer is on me.

Thanks lots of memories. One of which was the area when you were overlooking the North circular. A friend of mine had a house on the old north circular. On the day the new road bypassed his house it went up from £15000 to £25000. Now it would be around the £600,000 mark.

In recent months I've taken to placing my hands on old interesting looking trees on my walks in the hope of absorbing some of their positive energy, wisdom and experience myself. Im also no hippy but i figure its a privilege to still have these living witnesses to history around. I walked through the amazing 450 year old great oaks just across from the Queen Elizabeth Hunting lodge last week, a day before the pubs closed (managed to get one last pint). On that day i was feeling daunted by the enormity of what i could see was about to unfold and i actually found myself praying to the Tree Gods to protect myself, my family, friends and everyone i love. I think considering all the pleasure, comfort, stress relief and knowledge your videos have given me, John, you can consider yourself covered by that Prayer. 👍 Stay safe everyone, and if you can walk close to home and at a distance to others, then make sure you do for your own sanity.

Coo, that was a grand walk through some old haunts John. I'll forgive the horror of mock tudor semis for the glory of the mighty Roding. So much of my childhood spent there fishing. Rucksack, rod and net and a ramble upstream for as far as I fancied. I was so lucky to have it on my doorstep. Stay well and listen to the trees. And don't be using the H word - you know you don't like it :-)

One of things I like so much in your videos is the music. These days every tv advert or show employs screaming rock music which for me destroys any pleasure I might have gleaned from it. Your videos and music have quite the opposite effect in that they are very calming and enlightening. I'm so pleased to hear your are going to do further videos whilst somewhat housebound. I so look forward to each Sunday's visit to your world and views and thoughts therein. Keep yourself and your family safe my friend.

Thanks so much Michael. I spend quite a lot of time selecting the music as it has a big influence on the atmosphere of the video. Getting the mix right can be tricky too as I record my voice outdoors with different levels of background noise. I've just started work on a new video and being at home has made me approach it in a whole new way

That takes us back. Just before lockdown. We live in a large village in Wiltshire, albeit near the outskirts,so we were able do a 3 mile circular walk most days on small country lanes. We would meet other people doing the same thing, but we always crossed to opposite sides of the road when passing. The amazing thing was, that everyone said ‘Hello’ as we passed. Total strangers. It was if lockdown brought people together. We both had our jabs, plus boosters, but then caught the virus this year in March. By this time it was a much less aggressive illness, rather like a nasty cold which left us with a cough for a couple of weeks. I guess when you filmed this, you couldn’t have known what the next couple of years.

Nice pleasant walk John, last for a while until this madness ends, you mentioned the Roding flooding reminds me of back in 1999, I think it was about then, the Roding burst it's banks, all the way along Chigwell Rd the houses had sandbags up against the doors and Charlie Browns roundabout was under water, also along Herman Hill the basement flats got flooded as water came up through the drains, I don't think it has happened since....anyway looking forward to your next walk wherever and whenever that will be.

Thank you for a wonderful video. I have only just come across your content and am now looking forward to spending some happy lockdown hours exploring your archive. You have such an appealing and gentle philosophical style that enables you to draw pleasure from everything you encounter while politely overlooking things that are ugly and crass. This walk will have taken you right past Forest School, where I went many years ago, and your description of the muddiness of Gilbert's Slade certainly brought back memories of the cross-country runs we were forced to go on through those squelchy, sodden woods.. I've walked a fair bit of Epping Forest in my time, but mainly further north around High Beach and towards Epping, and am regretting now not having explored the parts you went on on this walk. Maybe one day when this is all over.....

Thank you John An area I know well , your comment while you were talking to the trees, re getting all the KZfaqrs who follow your posts to do a walk would be a fantastic idea, we did a charity walk I was 14 yrs. old from the flats pond. top of cann hall road , lots of the route you were on in this video , and ended by the volunteer pub , just down the road from the wakes arms , we walked to Epping tube station , to get the train back to Leytonstone, Maybe someone might think it’s just a walk through the forest , it was about 49 years ago , but it truly burnt a mark in me , and even still feel good when I think about it after all these years , Just to say again please seriously think about a walk , maybe good to help a charity or a few charities , and also , a pint or three on me. Thanks again for the video, hope things get better soon in these strange time’s , Stay safe Richard Butler St Osyth Essex

The River Roding is the River i grew up living next to in Barking So this was great. Its odd that we humans have a huge connection with Rivers. I would love to know whats that's all about ? Do you have any ideas as your a River man? keep safe thanks John 👍💯👊
@JohnRogersWalks
@JohnRogersWalks 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks 4thEye - I've really come to love the Roding over the years. I've been wondering about this connection to rivers and realised that over the last year or so I've increasingly been drawn to watercourses since my mother passed away, in fact I did the walk along the Chelmer on her birthday quite by coincidence. I guess water is an elemental force, in pagan belief rivers were said to be the boundary between realms - the physical and the spirit realm. Maybe it's a genetic memory of our forebears gathering beside rivers when they went to fish, cook, gather water etc. There's definitely some sort of attraction.

I am all locked up inside my home since last week. Just smoking my pipe. It is miserable staying inside but I guess social distancing or self-isolation is the only way of fighting off this ugly invisible virus. Stay safe and wish you the very best.

Wonderful video John. I used to visit the hollow ponds in my younger days as did my father as he was born in Leytonstone. I also had the pleasure ( or not ) to do jury service on two occasions at snaresbrook crown court. As for hippies, well I used to be one in the 1970's .Enough about that though. I often go to the river roding in chigwell at the roding valley meadows. I remember going there as a child as it was an r.a.f. base and my uncle was stationed there. Keep well and safe John and look forward to your next video which of course may be in quite a while. Bob.

So poignant to see you on what may be your last walk for some time, it was luverly😊loved the coots on the pond and your tree wisdom. On our walks around Windsor over the next few weeks we will try to visit the river and feed the swans as they're suffering through the lack of food from the tourists, poor birds, strange times indeed. Look forward to seeing what you put on here over next few weeks, and on Instagram. Stay safe and well with the family. Deni 😃

Thanks so much Deni - it felt poignant at the time, knowing the lockdown was coming. I'm working on some ideas and excited about sharing a few things I've been holding onto for a while. Send my regards to the swans down at Windsor, we used to visit every year when we played then at cricket when I was a kid

Hi John, I’m massive fan and think the level of craft and care in your videos is amazing. Always a treat when you upload - absolute works of art. Thanks for the lovely videos John. There is a large lake which is closed off along the River Roding, near Buckhurst Hill (it’s not the Roding Meadows lake though - it’s close by but larger).. wondering if you know what it is and why it is closed off? I’ve always been curious about it!

I agree with your learned and wise Tree acquaintance... A gathering of YT friends for a slightly less vicarious London perambulation experience. With a pint at the end of it. What will 'we' do without a cosy walking video and the familiar 'plink' of your favourite banjo tune? Looking forward to seeing what you have planned instead.

Social distancing has been going on in this country for decades. As has isolation. It is all very depressing. The long term effects of all this on the country's psychology will be interesting. The situation is made all the more difficult by the fact we have an untrustworthy government with a dishonest prime minster. It's at times like this the public need to have trust and confidence in government and we can't.

I quite agree P B - it's so strange the way it's worked out - the long term effects could be quite profound. I've been thinking of those kids who are missing out on finishing school and not doing their exams, that'l follow them for years to come

Ah, great stuff Pretty Vacant, I really enjoyed recording that. I've come to realise that I was lucky my publisher wanted an audio book as they're not so common for non-fiction books like mine. If you hunt around there's an audio version of Downriver you might still find somewhere
