That was graciously stated. Indeed, there are a multitude of factors involved with upgrading: Cash flow, location availability, preferred games, resolutions and so on. Many people are still running CPUs such as the 3770K & 4690K and are still singing their praises. The same applies to video cards like the 970 and 1080. I suppose that it all depends on the person?

I rocked a single-core Athlon 64 3200+ for 8 years on AM2. It had 3 GB ram, 160 GB hard drive, and a Geforce 7600 GT (from 2011 on). It had Windows XP. I had that pc from end of 2006 until end of 2014. We wanted to get a new one in 2012, but lack of funds kept us from doing so. I had to get every bit out of that computer even 8 months beyond the end of XP support that year. ;-)

im still rocking the 2200g ever since i got it 2 years ago, im planning to finally upgrade next month and i was choosing between getting a 3700x which is easily available at a very small price range, or getting the 5700x which i couldnt find many offers of and they were a fair amount more expensive than the 3700x, this video pretty much just convinced me to buy the 5700x regardless, by either just waiting another month or waiting for a better offer i have to say, even the 2200g is still capable of many AAA games today, its a big bottleneck for trying to run those games at 60 fps, but ultimately like the vid says, its not the end of the world, all games are still very enjoyable, that is until u try something like Star Citizen which is borderline unplayable at of the fps dips to 6 fps and falling through the world with the cpu at 100%, 1 in a 100 type of game but still

That really doesn't to the 970 though, it's just fast enough to still be "fine" for 1080p but the problem is the crippled VRAM. You really can't get away with less than 6gb these days. 3.5gb is not enough. GTX 980 is the lowest I would go for budget. I don't see anybody singing the 970's praises honestly no one ever does for anything by nVidia that's below a 80ti or at minimum 80 because their VRAM sucks, the support sucks, usually all the lower cards go tits up. Apparently their older GPUs also fail way more frequently than Radeons. Sometimes this counts with even high GPU, the 780ti is completely worthless these days for a reason, it's not about the driver support, it's the 3gb of VRAM making it completely useless. Not supporting Vulkan just makes it worse.

As Tech pointed out, the 3700X is similar to the CPU cores in the current consoles. Some new games are already getting very heavy and we see console games that are forced to run in 30 fps modes again and hitting CPU bottlenecks (e.g. Plague Tale Requiem). For new PC games where we want higher frame rates, or we want to dabble in new technologies, we need more. On the other hand if you go back to your Steam backlog, it will run all kinds of games great!

It runs our old games wonderfully... until a windows update breaks them. My all time favorite game is 20yrs old and I still play it. It needed a patch to get it running in Win7 & beyond, & then the fun with Windows began again. It was like a battle with Windows determined to break the game. GoG was a big help recently. Even with those headaches, it's usually better than trying to play a 15yr old console game

The Ryzen 7 3700X was a formidable 8C/16T CPU when it came out. I have one in my system from January 2020 to present. It started life paired with an RTX 3070 and more recently, an RX 6800 XT (pairs well with both cards). It's 2023 now and the CPU still feels and performs really well. Buttery smooth desktop use, quick simple video edits and 1080p gaming. At 65W TDP, it runs quite cool too, albeit slightly undervolted - doesn't go above 70°C during renders/stress test and 60°C during gaming. I use a Deepcool AK400 tower cooler. For my use-case, I think it will give me another year or two before requiring an upgrade to something snappier. Things to note though. I usually play Overwatch 1080p with a constant 240fps but whenever I run OBS to stream some gameplay to my Twitch, the fps will drop to between 170-200. Not noticeable but something to be aware of. Overall, it's still a great performing CPU in 2023, not for the most intense productivity work (whereby I'll use my other PC with a 13600K in it) but it's perfectly fit for gaming.

im currently on the 3700X. while i dont really need an upgrade right now, i feel like it might still take several years before either company comes out with a product that makes me go "YES! i want that!" with AMD still not doubling the cores until probably Zen 6 and Intel allegedly having to refresh Raptor Lake for 14th gen as Meteor Lake on desktop isnt doing so hot, and in that case i'd just like to be on the latest generation of my current older platform. ive been looking at the zen3 options and always felt like the 5800X3D cache would be wasted for me, and R9 options probably not being a good fit for my current motherboard's mediocre VRM and probably throttling. i might look into the 5700X option you mentioned. before, i always just felt it would be too small of an upgrade because of the common "if you want to upgrade, UPGRADE!" message here, but since this isnt about the latest and greatest that might not actually apply here.

i havent decided yet because of two reasons. the first being that i simply dont need an upgrade for my usecase. it'd just be nice to have for reducing latency as well as single core speed, and probably increase value when i sell my pc when its time to get a new one, however even though a lot of things i do are singlecore based im already bottlenecked by unoptimized game-engines you cant build against and monitor refresh rate. but thats where the second reason comes in which is that right now my pc just works fine, and my inexperience in pc building doesnt really make me want to tinker with it, since i also dont have a backup pc in case anything goes wrong. but as you can tell, since its about usecase and experience, those reasons are completely tied to me alone and shouldnt apply to anyone elses choice in a similar situation.

Could go even higher but the 650W PSU is limiting). I wonder if the CPU is holding it back or if its actually thermal throttling and the newer chip just run cooler. I am running 3700X for semiconductor simulation and it still runs great. Those CAD software companies do not really accept the state-of-art stuff quickly and the performance saturates at 16 threads. I could upgrade to the newest Intel with e-cores. But they are not very well accepted under the Linux environment and upgrading 128GB of ram to DDR5 is pricey. In the end, it will be replaced in a couple of years. But after that, I bet 3700X will serve well for non hardcore gaming and everyday tasks.

This video pertaining to the 3700x was quite useful as I'm considering building a PC for a friend of mine with some old parts of mine. They include a 3700x, RTX 2070, and 32gb of G.Skill RAM along with a 28" Asus 4k/60 hz monitor. I just need to get a PSU, case, SSD drive, and motherboard (likely B-550 type). His current system is at least 10 years old with a dual core i3 CPU and 4gb of RAM (from what he told me). It only has onboard graphics.

I had used an I7 3770k for like 7-8 years till I had upgraded to a 3700x build back in late 2019. I used it for about 2 years then sold it to my friend which he still uses and is happy about. It was a great cpu. Snappy as hell with dual rank ddr4 and an nvme ssd. It was also great for gaming in 1440p for me and I'm sure it'll not bottleneck unless like you go with 4080 or something with 1440p resolution for AAA titles. And as for competitive gaming, unless like you have a 360-500hz monitor and you want to squeeze every single frame that monitor can show, 200-300fps in competitive titles is pretty enough even for very skilled competitive gamers. While I can't say it'll be okay to pair it with a 4090 and get all the fps even with maxed out settings and RT on, it'll still be very playable and I'm not sure who in their right minds would pair a 3700x with the latest gen top tier gpu.

This makes me feel good. I just bought a Used Ryzen 7 3700X (Upgrading a Ryzen 3 3300) on Facebook Marketplace for $75. The seller upgraded their PC and wanted to recoup some of their spent funds quickly. I was worried that maybe i messed up settling so low but my build is hardcore entry level with a Radeon RX 5700 XT GPU. I bought my CPU from a guy who was gifted it two years ago as a gift (Pre-Build) with the GPU. He sold it to me for $300 and since then, iv probably put in another $400 in upgrades to the unit. I mainly wanted to even get an entry level PC so i can play modded Skyrim, Fallout, Mass Effect and WoW down the line. I already have a unlocked PS5 so if i really wanted to play a AAA title with full 4K / 120FPS on my true 4K tv then i can do that. Even with this video being two years old, i feel more confident now about my purchase. In 5 years when GTA 6, Elder Scrolls 6, Mass Effect 4, and whatever new version of Fallout exist, I'll worry about building a newer PC with mid-tier possibilities then. For now, im cool with my fully spec'd "entry" level being able to play my favorite games at max capacity.

The Ryzen 9 5900X is a pretty nice compromise since it can run at 65W while holding a pretty solid base clock on 12 cores, but 16 cores still don't make much sense performance wise unless you need a high threat count, and anything above 65W has a pretty poor performance / watt ratio. AMD 4 still is interesting even if bought new, but only if you target low to midrange applications, and the list of interesting CPUs is rather limited too: Ryzen 5 4500, 5 4600G, 5 5600, 5 5600G, 7 5700G, 7 5700X and possibly said Ryzen 9 5900X - and I would recommend the same as "Byte Size Tech" which is going Zen 3 with a 5700X. There are older and smaller versions, but the 4500 already is too cheap to actually consider those. The higher end, meaing 5600X3D, 5800X3D, 5900X and 5950X, may be nice update options, but for a new performance focused PC going AM5 with a Ryzen 5 7600+ would likely make more sense.

Definitely yes. If your motherboard supports it and if you can afford it i recommend a 5900x (if you do things other than gaming) or a 5800x 3d (if you primarily game).

Yes upgrading to 5000 series would give you a solid performance gain in gaming

The next generation of consoles won't be out until 2028. I think you'll be ok until then. You might have to settle for less than 60 fps at times, but it isn't the end of the world.

well... i have a B350 mobo and a 1st gen R5 1600 in it... The R5 1600 it's okeyish but for real this PC needs a CPU upgrade in order to maintain relevance... i'm in LatinAmerica so my income compared to PC parts isn't that good, so i expect to get the most performance for as much time as i can get, since it is also a bad country to sell used PC parts anyway. i was about to purchase a R7 3700x as an upgrade to the CPU, but 3700x its more expensive here than a 5700x brand new from abroad... and by a lot (abou 1/3 more expensive) not to mention the "brand new" 5700x prize... I was pretty happy with how close is the R7 3700x to the R7 5700x in terms of gaming performance... but Lucky for me a friend travelling to europe offered me to bring the CPU with him... so i purchased the R7 5700x which will be arriving to my hands in the next couple of weeks i do hope the R7 5700x keeps relevant for the next 8 years, since it is a 2022 mainstream CPU, so i guess it could last 10 years since release date. Moreon since in my country we play games a couple of years older just for the costs

Depending on price it might be smarter to purchase a R5 3600 and upgrade to the 5800x3D 2+ years down the line.

A willingness to embrace used parts makes the two yearly cycle, with choices like this, more feasible at reasonable costs.

If you game at 1440p and above with triple A games not competitive multiplayer lock your fps to 60 fps and you are good to go.
