State Legislatures and ALEC: Last Week Tonight with John Oliver (HBO)

While midterm coverage is largely focused on the parts of Congress that do very little, vital (and bizarre) midterm elections are going unexamined. State legislators pass a lot of bills, and some of that efficiency is thanks to a group called ALEC that writes legislation for them. It’s as shady as it sounds!

That guy punching the bill was only given 10 minutes to read it before deciding on it. He also said they had worked on it for a year and it was changed to almost new 10 minutes prior to the meeting. I'd be mad too! Totally justified in my eyes.

Assassination of character? WTF? He never once said anything bad about the guy and even said "I would have the same reaction". What he did, is talk about how State Legislatures are a joke/not as efficient as they may sound. Geez, the amount of butt hurt White Knights for a cause that no one even understands... if you don't like the show you can go. Don't pull arguments out of your ass and say "my fee-fees"

A little background on the angry guy throwing papers: Apparently they were given 20 minutes to vote on a 200 page bill. I honestly feel like the fact that the other representatives WEREN'T mad is a bigger problem than that this guy was. And this shit is common in legislatures. :( And then when people DON'T vote on bills because they weren't given enough time to read, it gives their opponents a chance to cherry-pick something out of the bill (like say something that gives financial support to veterans or whatever) and run attack ads against the person for not voting on it, even though there was lots of other shit in the bill that was terrifying and not enough time to read it. "Democracy", folks. Have fun in November....

Remember: LWT once had an entire episode on how horrible a conservative Canadian presidential candidate was and how great a Liberal presidential candidate was (even though the candidates biggest critics said he didn't know politics, and the aforementioned conservative was the presidential incumbent).

Connor MacDonald If that’s true I can understand his anger. Still probably not the most professional response to the situation. Some bills I imagine can take longer than fifteen minutes just to read. And then after reading I can understand some time to research might be require just to make sure you understand the bill correctly. So again I could understand the anger, but I do think there would be some room argue that his response was not the best handle it.

ALEC's "Judicial Sentencing Disclosure Act" requires that courts maintain a record of a judge's sentencing that will be subjected to public scrutiny, and will likely incentivize judges to increase sentences. ALEC's "Minimum-Mandatory Sentencing Act" limits judicial discretion by creating mandatory sentencing guidelines, which have largely led America to have the highest incarceration rate in the world. ALEC's "Mandatory Sentencing for Repeated Felony Theft from a Retail Store Act" increases criminal penalties for retail theft and reduces a judge's discretion in sentencing by requiring a mandatory minimum sentence. This bill would limit a judge's ability to impose alternate or lesser punishments based on the individual circumstances. ALEC's "Truth in Sentencing Act" requires that all defendants serve at least 85 percent of their sentence and not be eligible for parole or early release programs. This type of bill leads to higher incarceration rates, which is a burden on taxpayers.

Todd... GED means "General Equivalency Diploma", and it is called that because it is equivalent to a high school diploma. It's right there in the name. Or you could type it into google and find out the definition is "a diploma signifying high school graduation, awarded to those who successfully complete a required examination.". - By the way, Iowa isn't a special snowflake: The test is also high school graduation equivalent. But don't take my word for it: www.educateiowa.gov/adult-career-and-community-college/adult-education-and-literacy/high-school-equivalency-diploma-hsed - You're the only one here with a 7th grade education from Iowa, not those who passed the GED test. They tested out at a 12th grade level. Sorry.

If someone is going to publicly state they have a conflict of interest on the current issue, how the hell can anyone argue against the conflict of interest? How removed from reality do you have to be to tell someone they have no conflict of interest when that person is personally stating they do have a conflict of interest.

This is old, but... that's normal. The idea is that you're supposed to disclose anything that even *might* be a conflict, so that it's harder to argue later that you didn't realise you were meant to disclose something. So, like, if I did some work for a company once several years ago, that would be a situation where you disclose, and probably get told 'yeah, that's fine'. In this case there clearly was a conflict, of course.

Damn, John has aged so much in his time at the show. The general tone of levity hides so much of the pressure that the entire team must be under to constantly source relevant stories, verify their veracity, ensure they are comprehensive and inclusive, and make them consumable for the average viewer - all the while raging at the little injustices and inequities baked into the system. Makes me respect the show so much more.

A sobering thought: From Alan Watts, a British philosopher " In countries that consider themselves to be "republics" (aka democracies) there is a fear of outsiders, watch out for this as the tendancy is to slip into fascism. This lecture was recorded in the 1960's. That observation seems more real today.

As someone who has the inclination to perhaps work in the US in the future, there are many things that are stopping me too.

rougedogx We do know how to fix it, and we have a great framework and some true leaders coming our way. It is just a matter of hard work and time by mass amounts of people. Fixing problems is TOTALLY DO ABLE! You just have to define the problem, correctly formulate the action required to fix the problem (using scientific process) and locate the people who will take responsibility for fixing a particular problem. There are so many problems that putting together a army of problem solvers is time consuming. However, the solders are lining up to accept their charge!!! I encourage to find your general and join a cause that interests you, or to become a general yourself;-) L.

Tacos Buenos The point Stewart is making when he says that is that he describes his profession as Comedian, not political analyst or journalist. When is the last time you took a major comedian seriously regarding serious political matters? Thats the irony hes pointing to when he says that. Our news, esp. Fox, is so skewed and unreliable now that many people consider a professional comedian (Stewart) a better journalist than the real ones. So much so that people are trying to hold him to the same standard we should expect from a professional journalist rather than a comedian.

A doctor who performs an illegal abortion will be put in jail with a felony charge equivalent in severity to charges of rape and murder. The law can’t be enacted bc of Roe v Wade, but the Supreme Court has a 5-4 conservative majority and if they revisit the case, they could kill it and Alabama (along with states like Mississippi and Ohio) would make abortion illegal again

My question is: Have you ever got any threats, warnings, intimidation, maybe just mud-throwing, or any of those sorts of things, from companies, asociations or people related to the topics you discussed? Dear John, the state representative you were making fun of (Mike Bost) who was screaming furiously "Let my People Go"! had every right to be pissed off. If you do a little digging you'll find that the reason for his outburst was because the other members of the committee added some 500 pages of revisions to a bill on the day of the vote and he was not permitted a chance to read them and was expected to vote on it on behalf of his district. I would be furious too.

John and this show is (IMO) the best prime time show on Television. He speaks with pure, rational, fact. I think I've only heard a couple of his views that I disagree with. 98% of the time he is spot on. The haters of this show are really just cowards. " He is making too much sense! Get rid of him!" He is a threat to those corrupted fools on 24 hour "news". His spot on attacks of social ignorance is brilliant. Like The Daily Show, Last week Tonight with John Oliver has already cemented their place in History. Left or Right, this is a very important show.
