Thank you so much for being so transparent and honest about your Gardening struggles. So many other people simply show what looks good. You tell the WHOLE truth and I really appreciate it. So many of us struggle with the same things and it's nice to see that we are not alone. The garden is looking great btw! (Even with those awful deer)

I love your sense of humor regarding what could be very sad, love the salad bar comment 🤣 Try some cheap rolls of bird netting, I just throw it over things I want to protect during the night, and then remove it in the morning. It really works because it can really get animals stuck(which they'll do their best to avoid), if they mess with it.

Oh my goodness Jenny. Its like you are living right in the middle of the forest except you are right in town. I guess all you can do is plant things they will pass on by with and find something to eat elsewhere. But you have so many beautiful plants up in front and to see all the damage just makes me feel so disheartened. I will be anxious to see how you handle that front area. I have been ok yet still using my. Milorganite It keeps the bunnies disinterested and the deer too. But our neighborhood doesn't get the deer like yours does. Thanks my friend for showing this garden tour because the things that are thriving look really pretty. My bobo petites have some yellowing on the leaves like yours does and I was curious to know what that could be. They are in their second year and I did not experience that last year. I did water them more last year. Maybe that is the issue
@HarmonyHillsHomeandGarden

Pretty much everything in my garden is an experiment, so not sure about the hydrangea yellowing... maybe a fertilizing issue? Mine is in a container and probably wants more fertilizer than it has received.

This is the time of year that the garden can look pretty rough - plants that may have gotten over grown, or cooked in the heat / drought. Just a good cut back can make a huge difference! BTW Sanguisorba may just need to be moved to a sunnier spot (that is consistently moist)

We had beaver damage last year. They chewed down our cedar hedge. Cedar are not on their list of preferred trees, but if they can’t find what they like they they will take anything. So if you wipe out their favourites they can change their tastes. Good luck!

Loved the video for the simple reason you showed good , bad and ugly . But I feel your gardens in front of the house could use some compact hydrangea paniculata and hardy hibiscus . I feel growing a garden is always a choice between symmetry , foliage , color , texture and form . So although you might like some flowering plants they might not perform as you expected and so on and so forth . Add to that pest and animal damage . So all in all a very challenging hobby till you finally get the garden you envisioned in your dreams . 😀

I also deal with deer. This year I tried spraying, and it seems to have helped with deer browse although the groundhogs don't seem to care how bad something tastes. I used Deer Stopper II but everyone here swears by Liquid Fence. Anyway, the deer are now noshing on the old overgrown forsythia at the edge of the property including some ailanthus saplings that are growing in among the forsythia. I would be happy if they ate those things down to the ground. If only we could train deer to eat only invasive plants!

What are you using for deer spray? I use a mixture of neem oil and pepper spray. The hotter the better. Once you spike them, they’ll learn. Update: I had deer last night. Half a hosta, a couple blooms from a hydrangea, and a bite of Autumn Joy that they spit out. Take that 🦌

@@HarmonyHillsHomeandGarden I’m using 1 million scoville pepper extract by mad dog 357 from Amazon. CAREFUL!!! Gloves, mask, glasses. It’s nasty. Roughly one tablespoon per half gallon. I add neem oil concentrate because it stinks to warn them. I’ve fried some leaves by over doing it, so go easy at first. Some people add Dawn as an emulsifier, but I usually don’t.

They have not been to visit all summer. You can train then that nothing in your garden will taste good so they won’t bring their babies😊your garden is so nice, and you have invested time and money, it’s worth it to spray, please try👍

I feel your pain about the deer. There’s a lot of residential and commercial building going on within a couple of miles from me. Those areas used to be wooded, and the loss of habitat has pushed the deer into my neighborhood. Things are being eaten that have not been eaten previously.Argh!!!😖 I think you could plant a red Japanese maple in your front yard. I am in zone 8a, Wilmington, NC. I have one planted on the south side of my house and a weeping lace leaf maple planted on the west side. The blood good one on the south side is in full sun all day. Where your mahogany splendor hibiscus are gets dappled sun. My trees used to be more shaded, but the big trees came down over the years due to weather events. I have a little volunteer blood good maple in full hot sun all day, doing ok. You won’t know til you try. Good luck gardening in Baltimore deer country.
@HarmonyHillsHomeandGarden
@HarmonyHillsHomeandGarden Жыл бұрын
I've got a bloodwood volunteer in a container on the mostly shady north side, and it gets burned when it gets an hour of afternoon sun, so pretty sure it's not a candidate for the front yard. And Japanese maples are an expensive plant to try without a good chance of success.
@jenniferhooks2454
@jenniferhooks2454 Жыл бұрын
@@HarmonyHillsHomeandGarden it’s interesting how plants perform differently in different places. I agree with you on the price issue. My little blood good maples were volunteers that I let grow. My lace leaf weeping maple was very expensive 12 years ago. There was high shade then. We lost the shade trees, but the weeping maple adapted, thank goodness!

Im so sorry about the pokeweed blisters and your constant deer invasion. My husband and I just handled a bunch of pokeweed a few days ago. We cut it out of a shrub row. I had no idea it could cause a skin reaction. Thank goodness we did not have a problem but I know for the future to be careful. I use the ultrasound deer repellers but I know you have close neighbors so that wont work for you but I also am using a homemade pepper spray concoction that I found from a youtuber. You mix in a buckle and apply by a large paintbrush (flinging motion, like your cleaning you paintbrush of excess water after washing). Check it out, peanutbutter man on youtube for recipe. I think its easier than mixing up deer fence in a sprayer and so much cheaper. Beware; it smell disgusting but desperate measures.... Also you were talking about putting in a possible ninebark up front, just to let you know, I had my ninebark in the ground for 6 hours and the deer reached over my hostas to eat my ninebark bush. I now have mine caged to keep the deer away. You got this Jen!! Take your garden back from those naughty deer! LOL Take care and love watching your videos Jen.

Beautiful gardens. You work so hard to maintain everything. I appreciate your frustration with the deer. I have decided after years of spending a fortune on rabbit repellent that I am going to replace many of my traditional cottage plants with more rabbit resistant plants. I wonder if you can have a tree service clear out some top branches to open it up more on the side flower bed. Our neighbors had the tree tops trimmed to increase sun light for a new garden space. Her yard was just full shade from massive trees. Now, there’s area with lots of sun without cutting the trees down. We live in a woodland neighborhood also. Those pesky deer and the rabbits eating all my coneflowers. I think… I killed my pinky winky hydrangea. It was missed watering during our drought and extreme 100 degree heat. Black Lace Elderberry gets to be about 6 to 8 ft but if its happy it will be more like 10 to 15 ft. 2 of these plants at space could just be too massive but I think doing heavy pruning on them to keep them smaller would work. I feel like with all your deer pressure these would be worth a try. If nothing else if the deer don't like them make a fence out of them! Lol Love your videos....so sorry about Deermageddon 2022. If you need me I will be out chasing cute fuzzy bunnies!

Also there is a dwarf Elderberry but I believe the foliage is green. And there is also on called Laced Up. It's in the same fam as Black Lace ( sambucus nigra) however it only gets half as wide as Black Lace.

I have a Black Lace in the back yard, it's super slow growing so far, but will look at how it does over time. Maybe one for the front would be a good idea. Thanks!

Thanks so much Jenny for the tour! I’m so sorry about all the deer damage, I know from experience how frustrating it is. We don’t have Poke Weed here thank goodness, hope it settles down for you. HeyJenny! Your garden is beautiful. Suggestion for your deer 🦌 problem. I live in the woods and I have had my share. What I found that works for me is a motion-activated sprinkler. Give it a try!! Also, why don't you try some hydrangea n the front of the house? My lime lights do well in a part shade location. Keep up the good work!!

Will look into that - though not a fan of the idea of keeping a hose connected all the time. Hydrangeas are deer candy, so no hydrangeas outside the fence.

I love jungle looking gardens, so lush and it offers you some privacy. There’s just something about being enclosed in a garden that I love. When we moved in to our home 30 plus years ago we had a very lush line of trees on our property, unfortunately we had to put in a new septic system and they all had to come down☹️ nothing much grows back there anymore but weeds so when we had sheep they took care of the area, no more sheep just weeds. It really did break my heart when the trees had to come down now I’m looking at yuck. 🌺💚🙃

I loved your yard and garden tour! I'm sorry about all of your deer damage. I have a herd of about 15 in my yard and I'm sad to say that every time you showed a plant or shrub that was eaten by deer I had memories from two or three years ago where the very same plant met the very same fate. One thing I wanted to mention is your verbena and Mexican petunias which are not blooming, it might be that the deer are eating the blooms and not the foliage. That's what happened to mine. But I think your yard looks great! Thanks for sharing it!

The only thing about mint as a saving Grace for me is that I think it helps keep rabbits out of my garden. I planted several different kinds of mint in containers and they jumped ship now their all over, I just keep pulling the ones that are getting up in the business of my other plants and I know I’ll have them forever but I’ll just keep pulling. I haven’t gotten a lot of the garden space I’m creating done so their my fillers for the time being and they do smell nice as I pull them. I know in my yuck area I may just start transplanting them over there to see if they grow and I can just take the lawn mower to them, hopefully at least something besides weeds will grow. 🌺💚🙃

Aagghhh I was grunting disgust at my computer seeing all the deer damage.. they are completely insane with the destruction. I get it they're hungry but in my garden, I finally gave up and put up deer fencing around the whole property because I just couldn't handle the heartbreak (not to mention cost) of losing all my plants. Have you tried liquid fence? Your property is really lovely, I so enjoy your videos! 👏🤗

Is it legal there to put out some deer food? What I’m thinking is…. If you routinely put out some cracked corn or deer food in some containers they may get full on the feed and leave your plants alone… OR…. It could backfire and they could tell all their friends and you could end up with a huge herd that return. There HAS to be a solution!!! You work too hard for them to destroy so much of your garden. I could really sense your frustration with the animal damage. Have you ever tried venison???? Hahaha
@HarmonyHillsHomeandGarden
@HarmonyHillsHomeandGarden Жыл бұрын
hahaha - venison! Seriously, I've been slacking on my spraying, (like I'm slacking on my watering, fertilizing, etc., once the heat hits!) so it's kinda my own fault at some point too.

@@HarmonyHillsHomeandGarden .. I hear ya!! I realize that I keep wanting more and more plants.. but that requires more and more maintenance and upkeep. So.. like you.. I have gotten behind. The good thing is that most all your plants eaten by deer will recover. I just see you work so hard throughout the season and all you want is a beautiful garden in return. Doesn’t seem fair. Your videos are an inspiration and so fun to watch. You have such an honest natural humor that I love ❤️🥰🦋🌸🐝🌹

I no longer take advice from garden youtubers in planting unless they relate to my own zone which is zone 7. The simple reason is that regardless of zones falling in between the zones stated on the. Plants tag doesn't mean it will do well or survive based on other factors. These so call experts are good on there experience only in there zones and conditions They won't talk about other zone issues cause they are not expert in them. They are also making a lot of money and cannot be as honest about This because plants won't sell and you know the rest....gardeners plant what does best in your gardens. We are very creative. Each and every garden is unique and original in its own. If we stick to what does well in our our zone and conditions like native planting it allows our pollinators to thrive., have less problems. Advice is one thing but doing right by the plants is another thing. Happy gardening and love and embrace your own special place.
