'In life, there are just some things that you can't be late for. And it's a discipline that has to be installed in you whilst you are still a kid and I get that there are factors that can deter you from being on time,' says Anele.
Several graduates and some family members were barred from entering a graduation ceremony that took place at the University of Johannesburg because they were late for the ceremony.
Anele, Frankie, Cindy and Thembekile talk to Prof Bettine van Vuuren, Registrar at UJ about the incident that occurred at the university & what measures where taken for the crowd control.

Black people like to defend nonsense. A graduation ceremony is announced months prior and you need to plan prior. So if you're late youre late stay outside. I am a UJ graduate and you aren't allowed to join late simple. You go to the overflow and you don't fight. Fighting to go in like this is just barbaric

True - nqubekoprogresskubheka - You nailed it Swazi - as long as Africa celebrates and settles for mediocracy - we are going nowhere. In University Gradutions they always asked for 2 relatives per graduate ( Father & Mother ) but hey - Ezakithi zifika ne soccer club - and they want to force their way into the Graduation Hall .

I understand it. One cannot predict any delays. Families should book at an accomodation, a day before, if they are travelling from a long distance. The issue is african time, and certain people lack time keeping abilities.

True I think most universities over communicate graduation information. I think I saw time 3 times or more. 1st when you get an email that you are graduating that year, 2nd when you check student portal, 3rd when fetching tickets. They are always people late in graduations in all universities but they don't push securities they wait for moment to collect their certificates and take pictures in peace. UJ is a problem

Its unfortunate that we sometimes continue to refuse to appreciate and understand what - " LATE " - means. nor do we understand the consequences of being LATE. When the train departs at 07H00 and you are arrive 3 minutes late - The train is gone . If the train was going to HEAVEN . You would have missed an opportunity to see God. Good people - AFRICAN TIME has No Place in the DIGITAL , COOPERATE, INDUSTRIALISED WORLD - Lets not fool ourselves. Many of us miss opportunities by being late for special occasions. Time is Money and time waits for NO man.

i agree with the notion that the team is pushing, using the airport analogy gives clarity, and to those who have been on flights, know about time keeping, and the importance of being 2 hours early, to provide breathing room, and to bring a level of calm to the situation. Fighting to enter the venue should not be entertained as it triggers, and delay the process.

In the event of late comers, I think the institution should have security that ushers parents and graduates to a secondary hall or tent where the ceremony can be live streamed for them. I don't agree with late coming, but it's sad to see a gogo having to fight security. To also prevent a bad image of the university.

Nah they just failed to plan this event properly. I remember in my graduation, my Dad and Aunt were late but by the time I went to go collect my degree on stage I saw them sitting on the upper seats/ stands. They were able to get in and this did not disrupt the proceedings. Maybe UJ can get tips on how UP does it. I also went to NWU graduation and same thing. @LM-he7eb that's because at UJ there is an understanding that there's firstly, the graduation itself, which is a CEREMONY, which is about every student qualified to be there, and not about just one individual. The CELEBRATION, which happens afterwards is about the individual and nobody else. People who don't understand this spoil the ceremony with their selfish attention grabbing antics. I watched a UKZN ceremony where a mother interrupted the stage procession of her own child screaming and and high-kicking, with her poor daughter trying to get her to stop. I felt so sorry for that girl, this is her moment for the rest of her life. Carried on until an official ushered the woman off the stage. Nevermind the next student whose turn to participate had to be delayed by this.

This happened on Tuesday. I had a graduation on Thursday, we arrived 30 minutes before time and we were still locked up 🤷🏿‍♂️ I understand the "you can't be late", but the security just started bullying grannies for no reason. Graduates locked out from graduating, appalling!!! We got three invitations and none of none of the people made it because the venue was full. How when all the sits were allocated? This is literally one side of the story, ask the people who were there. They gave a PR answer here, far from reality once again. The supposed "overflow venue" was literally a lecture hall. We were directed to the lecture hall and there was a lecture happening there. There was a whole back and forth with the lecturer that they needed to get out. They are extremely uncoordinated. The sad thing is UJ will obviously distance themselves from these things and blame the security companies of course. It's quite sad.
