Didn't need to take it apart as much as you did because taking off the face plate un-jammed the decades of dust-bunnies in my VCR Thanks Electronicle!

Wow, thank you so much! You helped me fix my Magnavox MRV700VR with this video! It was the part that pulls the tape out of the VHS that was stiff. I just worked it a little bit and let it snap back to it's spot and boom! Worked!

Thank you so much for this video. I don't have a tin box full of spare belts but I manually rotated the wheel the belt goes on for a bit. Then when I put the tape back into the player I was able to get it to play for a moment or two before it stopped. I manually turned the belt for another couple of minutes and tried again. It worked. So I pressed fast forward and allowed the entire 2 hour tape to wind forward. Then I reversed it. Seems to have worked!

It the mode switch contacts are oxidized 100% that what causes that intermittent issues. By using it the brush scrape the contacts enough to make contact again and reason it started work. It not the belt at all. You have to disassemble it again and lift the mechanism up and you see the white round switch on the board you can pop the top brush assembly off and clean the contacts and brushes on the white part, put new dielectric grease lineup stud sticking out towards the top and will work reliability again. Refer to my video on the Funai and Magnavox VCR DVD combo and show how to fix one of these.

This VCR/DVD combo player was a real lemon. I used to buy and sell VCR/DVD combo players and this one was the worst. You really need to stay away from the years 2003-2006 for this Magnavox combo player of which there is many models. It was also used under the Funai brand. You can always tell the models as there is 4 screws in the top of the plastic cover. Almost a guarantee the unit will shut down shortly after a VHS tape is inserted. The problem was a bad LED diode that shorts out. The LED diode shines a light or something through the tape to tell it if is in the player. The later models were much better but the DVD spindle had serious vibration problems. Very difficult to get these units back to normal operation even if you have good spare parts. Poor engineering especially not having detachable wire plugs.

Damn. I really was hoping it was that pesky big *O-Ring* inside that needed to be "Nuked" back to its original retention capability.

Thanks for the video, I eventually got this same player working again. I do wonder if it was that belt though, I went ahead and used the boiling water method on that same belt like you did, I think it helped, but overall what's really seeming to help is just using the vcr as much as possible. Sort of like how yours randomly starting to work, mine was sort of working for a few seconds and then powering off, or not at all and powering off, it was random. A couple times it even "ate" some tape by leaving some loose in the player, with the top taken off you can carefully maneuver it back out without crinkling it. But messing with it was eventually starting to give me slightly improved results, until it eventually was able to play a tape, but not rewind or fast forward at first, then eventually it could. Now it's working like a champ. Almost like it just needed broken back in or something. I cleaned the head too by the way since I was already in there. Blocking that ir sensor and making it work without a tape also helped I think.

I had a Phillips combo and it looked exactly like this one. It was eating the VHS tapes so I decided to take it apart yesterday (1/10/21), and attempt to clean the mode switch (which I wasn't able to find or access). Like you, I discovered that it would not come apart where I could get to the motor and such and I was not able to. It had been a good unit for a long time but I didn't even attempt to put it back together. I tossed it in a trash bag and put it in the trash!

I have here a DV225MG9, nearly identical to yours. Mine has a Record function for the VHS tape end. It's interesting that yours does not have a video input for record, but still has an erase head. I guess it's cheaper to leave in than to take it out. It's made by Funai. They have a reputation for "low cost" video gear. It does record, but there's no tuner. I have the same model unit here with intermittent tape play, the same issue as you show here. It seems to work now after boiling the belt. Thanks for the tip.

I just realized that the VCR mechanism is different because this version is a vcp, not a vcr. But there is an erase head in there. So I think during the late 2000s, someone replaced the VCR mechanism

I’ve seen this kind of problem with many VCRs and the only conclusion I can come to is there’s just something wrong with the logic control. Sometimes you can fix it if it’s a mechanical issue but if not it’s just time to throw it out and get a new VCR those late models are junk.

Beautiful Video! You are a diligent determined work technician (even though you decided you now own a piece of shlit). Many of us have that same model (and there's still a bunch more of these units on eBay right now). Is yours the Magnovox DV200MW8 that doesn't record but only play? My DVD Side of the unit is working fine, but the power cuts off on the VCR side before I can see anything on the Tape. Will attempt to open her up, like you did and nuke that O-Ring. Just from your uTube visual, that thick O-Ring sure looks like a similar O-Ring I saw at Harbor Freight near their Orbital Sander Area!

Question: tapes start, then stop after about 30 seconds and the machine turns off. I thought it might be that the feeding spool of the tape might not be turning. But when I speed-advanced a number of tapes, they showed video and the same thing happened after about 30 seconds. Any ideas?

Hi I have a JVC HR-S860 SVHS VCR, when I insert a tape it powers off and ejects the tape, also it has a slow blow fuse on the power board, the fuse seems to be making some noise and was wondering what the fault maybe could it be a fault of the mode switch, power supply or could it be the fuse is at fault. Please reply.

If you want to make things more interesating, you can Frankenstein them to have 1 that has both working "I'd recommend the DVD portion for swapping, if you do the VCR portion you could mess that up it's a bigger hassle to work on unless you know what you're doing like what's shown here, then you can have a fun project of working on 2 in 1"

That's the same problem I'm having with my VHS DVD recorder. I can tape VHS tapes onto DVD's or vice versa. I have put several homemade VHS tapes in the VCR and they play for about 30 seconds and then it cuts off and the tape comes out when you turn the power back on. I've also tried some VHS movies that I bought and they do the same thing. Someone told me that VHS tapes can stick whenever they've not been played for a while but I tried homemade VHS tapes and store-bought VHS tapes and both of them kept cutting off after about 30 seconds. I'm going to try cleaning mine and see if it will work. It hasn't been used very much. and since it does that with both kinds of VHS tapes I'm thinking it may be the VHS player/recorder. Does anyone have any suggestions?????
