Love the late season, especially if you still have those late season food sources. Brings the doe families in which will being the bucks in when those doe fawns go into heat. I never thought about the fact that those doe fawns don't really run away but you're right, they just stick around for whatever reason.

@@whitetailevolution Thank you! I have hunted for over 45 years and I have made all the mistakes in the book you could ever make! I have been taking my two sons and another boy without a father who I have taught all 3 how to scout, shoot their bows, set up their stands and some since they were as young as 3 in a car seat! I called our hunting trips "Boy's Camp"! We Scout, Set up, practice, stay in motels, campers, cottages ect.. After we hunt we visit the local restaurants to eat and all share what happened on our hunts. We pick up pleanty of junk food and drinks and movies for after our late hunts. The boys have all experienced many fails and I have taught them to understand that it's part of the lesson! I taught them that hunting is much more than scoring that giant buck! When they tell me they saw nothing I say so you had your eyes closed? They laughd and say no! I explained the only thing you didn't see was what you were hoping to see! You missed the forest for the trees! I have taught them to learn from their mistakes and that hunting is much, much more than that big buck that hasn't shown up...."YET"! I explained by telling them how I went without a deer for over 15 + years learning everything hunting alone as I lost my father at 16 when he was 45. I told them I'm teaching them from my mistakes so they are way ahead of me back then! I said I just never quit! Each mistake taught me how to hone in on what is needed to become a hunter! I usually spent more time getting them set up to hunt and ready than myself during these years. I didn't have much time to hunt myself most of the time LOL! At some of our Boy's Camps I was questioned as to how come I never shoot a deer? Many times I would just sit somewhere as I spent to much time getting them ready. They never knew I didn't get to set up or hunt because I didn't have enough time for myself. One Halloween back home my two boys and the young man that I mentored like a 3rd son to me called to ask if it would be OK if they skipped our weekend hunt to go to a Halloween party just once. I said of course you can! I said go have fun and I can find a place around home to go hunt. They did not like that I was still going and without them! Lol! They said why don't I just take the weekend off too as they didn't want me to go without them! I said no it's fine and go have fun! I ended up shooting a 12 point that evening with my bow in Hemlock Mi. The boys called me the next morning and wanted to know if I went alone. I sent them a picture of my buck and me with my bow. I heard silence for a minute and then they said no way dad! They said there is no way I could just go hunt alone one for evening when we have all spent years out not getting one! I said like I taught you just be patient and when its your time it will happen! I said I had to put in many many more years than them in snow, rain, wind and my many mistakes and missed shots! All 3 never questioned me to why I never shot a deer yet again LOL! All 3 of the boys are young men now and all crack shots and very capable of taking their own trophy deer. They understand that hunting is much more than the kill and a prize! It's spending time to reflect on everything and anything out there and putting all those years of class to work for them to leave the woods with a memory, a story to tell for years to come, another lesson maybe, and if lucky enough a deer and a great big smile on their faces that they know was well earned!

We might have missed our window at the 2nd Rut, maybe not, but that's normally around December 6th. Going forward I would focus on those late season food sources if you have any in your area. Standing corn, brassica plots, grain plots or standing soybeans. Wait for a real cold day after a front moves through and sit the travel route to that food source in the afternoon. Late season can be tough but some real old bucks go down this time of year as they start hitting those food sources again trying to replenish those fat reserves.

Me also Steve there wasn't a single buck I would of put an arrow until now the big bucks are starting to move its crazy. Just keep at it that's all we can do

Keep at it Steve! Your season can turn around in 5 seconds. Just need to stick to the plan and stay positive. As far as cell cams there are two that I would recommend. 1st is Cuddelink. My hunting buddy runs these on his property and they run well. Some hiccups here and there but overall very good cell camera system and by far the cheapest monthly cost. 2nd recommendation is the Tactacam Reveal, this is what I run on our property. I run 9 of them and only had an issue with one camera but a quick call to customer service and they reset the camera remotely and it was back online. Very reliable and I haven't had to change the batteries yet this season (put out on labor day). Hope that helps.

Great questions and if you had success blind calling during the primary rut, I would be comfortable using the same tactics during the second rut. As far as what call should you use, that really depends on what deer you are trying to call and what that deer is doing. For example, your blind call you are trying to call a random deer that might be in the area that you didn't see in hopes that he'll get curious and come in. I use a fawn bleat to get the attention of a mature doe, so if I saw a buck on a doe he's not going to respond to a doe bleat or a grunt call, he's got what he wants already. You need to convince HER to come over and sometimes a fawn bleat or a fawn distress call can do that. A doe bleat will sometimes get the attention of a buck as hes cruising by alone. I'd bring all 3 and use whichever one I needed depending on the situation. Hope that helps!

I'm near Mayberry, NC and the deer seem to be bedded down all day and out at night now in December.

I would say that you need to monitor the weather just like we do up north, your deer will move more after a front moves through. As far as winter starvation, you won't need to worry about that nearly as much. Your growing season lasts longer and spring green up comes sooner. But the deer herd will still be looking for late season food sources and trying to conserve energy when they can.

Unreal isn't it? basically a month of gun season. All of the properties I hunt are in Zone 3 too.. It's a miracle these young bucks survive. We could do so much better as a state with a few adjustments to the regs.

I always bring my grunt call with me in case I see a buck that's traveling in the opposite direction. The second rut is another time you could try to rattle in a buck but I normally don't rattle just because in high pressure states like Michigan, a lot of hunters rattle and the aggressive bucks that come into that have most likely already been shot / shot at.. So I just stick with the grunt call.

Hey Scott great question, and I am not very familiar with NC but I will say that as the habitat and weather begins to change you will start to notice changes in their patterns. Will it be as drastic as the deer herd up here? I'm not sure. But the patterns of the deer where you hunt will definitely change as we push further into winter.

Absolutely! Scraping activity picks up a little bit during the second rut as those bucks start to get more active again. Most of my stands are complimented with a mock scrape because they are social hot spots all year long!

That was Michigan before the baiting ban too. Most of the piles here were used by Does and young bucks, rarely heard of an older buck being taken off a bait pile. They learn quick that those are not safe.

You know it! Behind the house we have radishes and turnips along with cereal rye. Up north we have that same mix along with a few acres of standing beans. Can't wait to sit over those in a week or two!

I think it has to do with a few things. I try to create content based on what the subscribers want to see at a particular time of the year. So during the fall its more hunting strategy and once the season is over I transition over to habitat improvements. I think hunting content in general gets a lot more traction in the fall because we are all so locked into deer season. Everyone tries to consume as much content as possible, so this contributes to more views. I also have a facebook page, instagram page that I share the videos to. I never know who is following what so I make sure to post the link to all of my pages. Outside of that, I try my best to create quality content that I would personally want to watch. Keep the videos short to keep the viewer engaged and try to show background video (B Roll) of what you're talking about to help the viewer understand what you're saying. You feel bad because you're imagining that happening to yourself. Deer are tougher than humans. I doubt that affected her much at all.

If you look really close you can see a little spike coming up on one side.. He actually survived too! Watch the video we did called "Once a spike, always a spike". We just show video of this one spike and what he turned into the following season, it's pretty cool! He got shot that next year too and didn't make it though :( was hoping to show what a spike would look like as a 3 year old!

You are right about that. Hunting public land in heavily pressured areas is anything but easy.

I think I have a couple videos on the channel that I shot indoors (tactacam / ozone tote) and a few of the mounts were in the background. I don't shoot Don Higgin's caliber deer but I try to target the oldest deer using my property on any given year. For the most part, that means I'm shooting 3.5 and every once in a while 4.5 year old bucks. The same caliber bucks you see in the B roll throughout these videos. Great Michigan bucks but not terribly impressive for those destination whitetail states. 😂 does only stay in heat less than 24 hours. God makes it this way so predators can't smell them wherever they are. Deer can go into heat actually more than 2x if they are not breed.

@@gregyoung1364 well your more than welcome to look up the guy who has studied them for the better part of 3 decades. He has had his own farm of over 100 deer on it. And he says there is no evidence of a second rut. They come into heat and stay in heat for a period of time and that's it. I think I'll take the word of a man who has had a team of people studying them.
