Here's the next Three-For-All lesson with 3 Jimmy Herring Licks From 2011.
Jimmy Herring is a phenomenal guitarist and musician that has worked with a plethora of interesting musicians and groups over the years.
I first became aware of Jimmy's music and playing while I was a student at AIM in Atlanta, which is where Jimmy used to teach in the late 80s and early 90s.
Jimmy's style is very musical and melodic, as he skillfully blends rock, blues, jazz, and fusion ideas in his licks and phrases often, which gives his playing an excitingly unique delivery and sound.
This lesson takes a look at a few licks from a bootleg of a 2011 live performance that I found on KZfaq, which provides a brief look at some of his challenging and exciting ideas. This includes a shift-bending idea, a blurry legato run, a jazzy melodic motif, and more.

Kinda late here, but Jimmy released “Subject to Change without Notice” back in ‘12. I got a signed copy when it came out... it’s a really good disk that really showcases his extreme diversity.

My first exposure to Jimmy Herring was when Widespread Panic was on Squidbillies. I thought, "Man, that sounds amazing!" Did some research, and I was not disappointed. Great lesson, Dave. I don't think anyone would complain if you did fifty Jimmy Herring lessons in a row. Lol. His bag of tricks is bottomless.

Loved the Shawn Lane licks, but Jimmy is my all time favorite player and biggest influence by far. Great video. I subscribed.

Thank you so much - that rocks! I loved Shawn Lane's music and ability, but there's something special about the way Herring plays and puts things together in his music. He's so melodic and musical, but then he'll turn around and melt your face off with some hyperactive crazy lick. I love that! : )

Absolutely. I have been studying his playing for years now. For me, he was the player that once I heard him, literally everything changed. I enjoyed your article as well. Didn't realize it was you until I watched this video. But I definitely look forward to more of your videos. We obviously have very similar tastes and influences, so I'll definitely be checking out all your stuff. Thanks

That's awesome and thanks for checking out my GP lessons too - that rocks! Jimmy's the man and I'll surely add some more of his ideas and music to the mix around here. I'm thinking a look at some of his chord ideas in a Chordplay episode would be interesting, as he always does cool twists and turns in his rhythm and chord playing. Stay tuned and rock on man!
@StepSonOfGod89
@StepSonOfGod89 5 жыл бұрын
Yeah that would be cool. His approach to chord voicings is deeply rooted in his love for Holdsworth's music. He just maps out a scale, finds a voicing he likes, and then moves each note up or down one scale tone to find other voicings. The areas of Jimmy's playing that I haven't been able to nail yet are his lightning fast all picked runs, and his tremolo technique. I know the picking is a mixture of McLaughlin and Morse, and the tremolo a mixture of Jeff Beck and Holdsworth (mostly Beck,) but he has taken each of these techniques to another level. His fondness of the diminished scale is another huge component of what ultimately is his voice as a guitarist. Can't wait to see what you come up with

That's great to hear and have fun exploring his music and ideas. He's such a great player and is really misunderstood by most rock/metal fans. In many ways, he's basically a "guitarists-guitarist" and even though he can play all sorts of music and musical styles, at his core is a rock guitar style, which I think that's why I clicked with him and his music when I first heard him. I could hear the jazz lines and ideas, but he was using overdrive/distortion and playing great variations of shred licks. Great stuff! : )

Great stuff, David. Jimmy Herring has a cool mix of influences from Jeff Beck and Steve Morse and a ton of his own ideas. He has an interesting way to hold the pick and move his right hand, too. The grip might be a bit like Steve Morse's, using two fingers (and thumb) on the pick.

Subscribed after came across your Marcus King video. I like that you 1) pick the licks we actually associate as being special or unique to the guitar player and 2) you keep to manageable phrases and not over extended runs.

David, this was another great lesson. I need to check out more of Jimmy Herring’s work. I’ve seen clips of him playing before, but I really haven’t gotten around to checking out his music. I know you mentioned putting out books and articles on guitar, but do you play in a band? You’re sounding great in these videos!

Dave, this is Matt again. I went AIM, Jimmy was my teacher... what year were you there? After that I left and went to LA, and I became an actor. You need to do an Uli video too... Most of my guitars were made by Performance, then Warren and I became friends, then Uli... I have a Sky guitar he named for me. That would be an interesting lesson after Landau. Hope you are well. Your lessons are really great. Peace. Oh, and Shane was my teacher... I still talk to him sometimes.

Thank you Sir🙏 Have you done a video on Gary Moore kicks, those fast pentatonic scales he does. All the other Vids of guitarists trying to show them get there to a certain extent.. I would love to see you teach that as I’m sure you would nail them . Thank you in advance
