Here Coach Adrian Guyer covers how to lateral shuffle the "right way", and why the shuffle is a common fault in athletic performance. The lateral shuffle is a segway movement that transitions athletes from moving forward or backwards at higher speeds and velocities. It's not a movement that is done for long distances in sport, however it is very important that we remember how to set athletes up to perform at their best and ultimately be quicker more reactive athletes.
1) Maintain a positive shin angle. Keep the toes pointing forward with knees over the shoe laces.
2) Drive with the rear leg. The motor is in the back of the boat, so we don't want athletes "pulling" with the front leg we want them using the bigger muscles of the upper and posterior leg and hip to drive them from the backside. The lower leg is a big contributor to the shorter, quicker more reactive shuffles.
3) Keep your "nose over your toes."
4) Use the jump test to help athletes feel force and power from a positive and negative shin angle. If they can feel the difference they will commit to changing a faulty pattern.

Excellent analogy with the motor of the boat and referring that to pushing off your back leg. Awesome vid!

Anyone who can't make it through 4 minutes and 11 seconds has the attention span of a gnat. Its basically 2 minutes of proper form explanation and benefits of it followed by 2 minutes of improper form and the disadvantages of that. I'm only here looking for exercises to add to my routine, but bringing in the context of an athlete competing in a sport, another point that I thought about is if you got a pointed foot the other player (if they are attentive and looking for openings) will know which side you are weaker on. Opposite the pointed foot. Its also a tell at which direction you are going to move in. So few examples: In Badminton if they see you with a pointed foot they can probably assume with a high probability which direction you will move in and which direction you will hit the birdie (or tennis ball if its tennis) in. Football or Basketball it could also tell them which side they will have a higher likelihood of passing you on. If you wanna get a bit Medieval, various martial arts whether its HEMA(Historical European Martial Arts) or hand to hand, if they can see which side you will have the smaller reach in it may provide them openings and openings score points if they are fast enough. Its not just about power but also balance and directionality. Which I think this video makes perfectly clear. Sure there are ways to make the video more efficient, layout information, use more graphic editing, etc... But its 4 minutes. Arguably you are wasting more of your time if you are improperly doing the lateral shuffle drill or exercise every time you are doing them. And while it can be a subject with different opinions, I think this video perfectly outlines the objective benefits of balance and directionality that this method provides.

Look up how Lee Taft teaches shuffling. Back leg pushes, front leg pulls with toe open.

Thank you for this! Lee is a wealth of knowledge and I appreciate all that he does greatly. I am not in total agreeance with him on this, but the devil is always in the details. Too much front side pulling is not good thing, so we don't use that as a cue when training the lat shuffle. Remember a lat shuffle is a segway movement, you don't do it for very long and it's almost always in response to what is happening in front of you, such as guarding someone. IMO the lead leg should acts as more of a transfer station rather than the driver, as it transfers energy created with the rear leg in coordination with the upper body while the rear leg repositions and drives or pushes into the floor again. The lead toe opening up is going to happen, but I don't coach it because too much of it will take them out of a reactive position when it comes time to change direction, whatever direction that may be, or a jump up in the air. Too much weight on the heel as they pull puts them at a mechanical disadvantage and leads to a slow reaction to whatever happens next. Try this on your own and see what leads to the fastest COD. Does this make sense?

So actually, with the leg which "kicks" out to initiate the shuffle, one should rather land on the forefoot and continue the shuffle t han landing on the ankle?

I'm sorry I don't understand the landing on the ankle? The key is to stay on the forefoot of both feet. You don't really pull from the lead leg, that leg acts to support the body and transfer momentum created in the back leg. In sport it's rare to see athletes shuffle more than few steps in any one direction, it's just a segway or set up movement.

Do you still believe this is the most efficient way to shuffle?

As with everything we are always looking for ways to improve. In the case of the lateral shuffle we still teach that we must drive from the rear leg for the sake of creating power and keeping athletes in a position to be most successful in the next play. Again it's a segway movement. I see the pointed lead toe with more than just basketball players. In my opinion I feel this is a very efficient way to shuffle and this is based on testing in various environments, both open and closed drills and testing. I want the foot and ankle to have optimal tension and thus be as reactive as possible in any change of direction. Some of these cues have helped us immensely in achieving that with our athletes. But I am always open to feedback and welcome anything you may have found also?

do you realize that in your videos you don't spend any time actually showing, it's mostly talk. I still don't know how to do the movement because you never showed it...
