What a life Paul is living.....he could probably talk for a week without repeating a story

So could i. He might have worked with more famous people but I've commercial fished, built oil pipelines, high rises, hitchhiked across Canada Lived in Texas, Mexico, and Canada. Sold cars, time share, won boxing tournaments, almost had a fist fight with Joe Walsh, that just the tip of the iceberg. We should all be able to tell stories that don't repeat for a week by the time we're 40!!!

I actually knew Andy Kaufman, and I saw him, for the first time, do the “Mighty Mouse” routine. Then later I would see him at the Improvisation (which we, all the comics and singers, would call it “The Improv.”) and I must have seen about for years at the Improv, because I would be there every night for about 2 and a half years. Many times, I would be at the bar because I couldn’t have the money to see the show. So I heard him do the Elvis Impression, not see it. Just hear it! I finally sneaked into the club and saw that act. I can tell you that when he spoke, he was very gentle because he wasn’t playing a character. So I lived in New York City all together for 5 years. That’s the truth. I was always broke except when my check from the government came in!

Shaffer goes into a great long story about the fact that he thought Andy did Clifton all of those years, but it was really Zmuda, and the interviewer shits on it in a millisecond and moves on to the next question. That's really an awesome story, and I would have wondered if Zmuda also did the rehearsal. I'm certain Letterman didn't know either, and Zmuda kicked ass on that show. "I don't know about talented"- hilarious.

"I'm rehearsing with Tony Clifton the character and of course i'm keeping up with him totally,whatever he wants even though he;s not that musical." - Paul Shaffer on Tony Clifton Not that Musical? Let me tell you somethin, I used to work with Tony,he was a class act and nobody, and I mean nobody could keep up with him. His musical sensibility, sense of timing, and use of vocal dynamics was second to none! To none Paul! He could bring a note down the the ground so low that it could trip an ant, and then he could expand his chest out 4 feet in all directions and pump the wind throuh his throat with such force that we would have to unplug his microphone or he would shake the buildings apart, those clubs they dont make em like they used to, he would sonically destroy the bricks if we left him plugged in, he could put out more force and volume with no amplifiers than a dozen Robert Plants stacked end to end with 5 dozen stacks of Marshalls. Nobody could keep up with Tony, Nobody, he was light years ahead of his time and so far ahead of you Paul that when you thought you were in front of him he had already circled the Universe and the Spacetime continuum and come up behind you just to give you the honor of working with him because he was just that special. It was an honor for you, you understand??!?!

Who did the lounge singer bit first: Andy, or Bill Murray?
@brunneng383 жыл бұрын
Andy. Just watched a video of him doing a proto-Clifton character at an improv before he became famous.
@keef72243 жыл бұрын
@@brunneng38 Couple problems: the earliest Improv appearance of Tony Clifton that I have found on YT is from 1977- his HBO special. That’s the skinny Tony who sings Tie A Yellow Ribbon and gets flipped on his ass after challenging a female audience member to a fight (the beginning of the wrestling bit?). David Steinberg hosted. Andy was already famous at that point, having been on the very first SNL in 1975 and numerous other talk shows by ‘77. There is a clip on YT of Bill Murray doing Nick the Lounge Singer at Second City in Chicago- way before SNL which he joined in 1976. That’s why I’m thinking Bill did it first. Not that Andy exactly stole it, since the characters personalities were very different, but it seems Bill came up with the premise first.
@Itelkner3 жыл бұрын
@@brunneng38 Not so sure. Bill developed his lounge character at Second City before joining SNL. He was doing it mid-seventies. Theres footage of him doing "Up Up and Away" at Second City - I'm guessing around '75-6. Bill claims to have got it from watching these performers.

@johnwattdotca2 жыл бұрын
@@condocord7544: I'm still sticking with my definition of a professional musician, considering I used to be one. According to the American Federation of Musicians, vocalists aren't musicians and don't have to join the union. However, onstage, vocalists get paid twice as much as a musician. Dan Ackroyd is local for me and I've seen John Belushi, seeing them as comedic actors, great comedic actors, but actors, not musicians. I still watch some old Blues Brothers to see Dan Ackroyd dance, still trying to imitate that while I play guitar. A lot of people think the r'n'b songs in the Blues Brothers movies are classic motown, but they're not. They were written by local bands where Dan Ackroyd lived, bands like Crowbar and King Biscuit Boy.
