KZ was just a guest of Jessie J at that time so she only had a few parts. In that episode, the finalists are supposed to collaborate with their one chosen artist. Coco Lee is an international artist and winner of Singer 2016 hence Jessie J picked her. The production management allowed Jessie J to guest KZ since she's popular with the chinese audience.

Before I fall in Love, a beautiful song in the 90's by Coco Lee is one of my all-time favorite love song.

Just adore Jessie J! Although, I was a bit disappointed with her song choices/arrangement for the show, as they were a bit safe compared to other singers (especially since everyone had to prepare a new performance every week). (Sorry this comment ended up so long!) The Chinese string instrument used here has a history of ~2000 years and is called the 'pipa' (You have heard it before in exo LAY's 'LIT ' and a reversed version of it in 'Eagle' ^__^). I think the team who did the arrangement for this performance may not have been very familiar with the pipa's integration in popular music as it is tuned on a pentatonic scale (although the modern version has modified to a full scale). It was still nice that the team decided to give this token of appreciation though. It's the thought that counts. Actually, Jessie went on this show because of Coco Lee. Coco Lee was the champion for the previous season of 'I am a Singer' (Love her rendition of 'What's Up' kzfaq.info/get/bejne/Z5yEdK2kzqfceJs.html). It was quite a moment because there was a time when she lost her voice and was silent for awhile. This year will be her 27th year since debut. She is the first Chinese person to perform at the Oscars almost 20 years ago when 'Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon' won Best Original Score (A Love Before Time-English version kzfaq.info/get/bejne/d9lgh5V5ybaZfoU.html ). In addition to her Cpop career, she also had an international career and collaborated with a lot of artists. She sang the theme song for 'Runaway Bride' (Julia Roberts & Richard Gere ) ^_^ kzfaq.info/get/bejne/aMlyoZebzbfZoJc.html I think to say the Chinese audience is conservative is right, but also not quite right. Similar to the Japanese market, the Chinese market is also very, very receptive to foreign artists (it's this receptivity that partially created the anti-Hallyu sentiments in both markets ^^:). The conservative part is the public's general taste in music; they prefer slower songs with strong and simpler lines (it's similar in Korea...although they have all the colourful kpop songs, it's the ballads and drama OSTs that chart the most). You can look at Olly Murs's 'That Girl'. It has some 4 billion downloads in China. ALSO, due to the nature and history of the Chinese language, lyrics are extremely important. Literally, the feedback for every song has criticism about the lyrics...you get hate simply for having lyrics that are too simple or if the literary agents aren't used correctly lol~ Because of this, a lot of the public isn't equipped to appreciate other genres of music...to them, it's just 'noisy'. Of course, this is just the popular songs, there is a lot of other kinds of music running around in the market and music is always moving forward (abeit slowly) ^__^

I think it's the stringed instrument they used in the intro of the song that made it feel like "bizaare". It's the traditional chinese/japanese stringed instrument we often hear when there's this presentation being showcased about their culture and history. Well, as I could imagine it.

KZ is a big Jessie J fan, she loves and adores her. Jessie was hope and inspiration to KZ, maybe at the lowest point in her life. When KZ was in high school (I think), she developed a polyp on her vocal cords that limited her voice range--she cannot belt anymore. She was devastated that she cannot follow her dreams anymore, lost hope and wanted to stop "singing" altogether. You see, in the Philippines, a lot of aspiring singers, as young as they can get, dream of becoming one of the greats, like the one they grew up watching and listening to. Filipinos in general idolize singers who can belt their lungs out. And a lot of our prominent artists are like that. There are a lot of local singing competitions held in small communities from time to time (already part of our culture)--and you can't expect to win without singing "contest pieces" that highlight your vocal range & power. It's not too long ago that Filipinos opened up, enjoy more, different types of singing, genre, because of artists such as KZ who broke that mold, as well as the advent of Kpop, chart-topping international artists,.. So I guess, for KZ at that time, felt she lost her card to achieving her dream. That's when she saw Jessie J. and her singing. She started singing again, worked with the voice she has, reinvented her style, and that's the KZ we have today. The both of them accidentally met at the Singer, I mean before KZ's time to be introduced to all participating singers, it got emotional--talking about how Jessie J helped her. You can see clips of that on KZfaq. And their interactions at the show are adorable.

Coco lee is just such an iconic Asian singer. She was one of the first Asian artist to put out English songs on the states. Is a shame people now only recognize kpop artist that try to cross over there when she did it decades ago..

The way I hear it this song was "orientalized" in a very good way. The string instrument and melody at the beginning is typical of traditional Chinese tune. It's an east meets west perfection. 😊

Jessie J on the singer was amazing, I started following the show because of her and discover so much amazing artist like the god of singing Dimash, and Hua ChenYu, Henry Huo, Tenggri, Ayunga and some others that really blew my mind how much we don't know or we miss here in the other side of the world. In the closing show for 2018 season Dimash was invited, there is a video of Jessie J reacting to Dimash performance, maybe you can take a look at that is a short video :D
