The Instrument you are referring to, Dolak and Mridangam are different, but of the same type. Mridangam is the one you are actually talking about, with nearly even cylindrical shape. Dolak has quite the smaller drum sides and is very thick in the middle, and is a north north wester folkish instrument. Mridangam is a purely Southern Carnatic classical instrument.
