I grew up pretty sheltered and this is the first time hearing this term. What does it mean?

So I just learned about this. The person who coined the term didn't actually mean to start a movement. They were just annoyed that a guys are Latinos, woman are latinas, but you mix them together in a group and they default back to Latinos so as part of a school project they replaced the end with an X. Spanish speaking languages do have a true gender neutral form and it's Latines (though most still fall back in Latinos but the 'e' is more inclusive and grammatically accurate than Latinx). Latinx is more for guilty white parties to use who don't know better (coming from a white guy trying to do better)

The only neutral term is Hispanic if you want to be "inclusive". Also t varies on the person and this is coming from someone who has taken and learned so much from the subject of Chicano Studies in the University. But that aside i am only sharing my knowledge from what i learned from the subject and it is an eye opening subject to learn from. For those who do not the term Latinx versus those who it is a slur invented by white people and to be more inclusive. The terms that is gone by are Latina,Latino,Chicano,Chicana, and Hispanic or whatever ethnicity you are, like for example myself, i am mexican-american or mexican. also don't really give a shit of what I go by even with pronouns but that is a different matter. I know some people label themselves Latinx without knowing the meaning behind it or they do in someway. Just remember what it means and if you prefer it that way then okay. Just don't be that dick calling people who speak spanish Latinx. The only neutral word i can think of to be inclusive is Hispanic. That's it. Again, it varies on the person and what they want to go back with.

I don't think it takes away from our identity. Should there be a gender inclusive term for us? Hell yeah. Latinx ain't it though. If one of the other commenters above is correct, Latines is another one that exists that makes more sense. Latinx is a woke white liberal word that was created without any input from latin Americans. Hispanics doesn't work overall since there's Latin Americans that don't have origins from Spain (like Brazil). We need a word that includes the nonbinary members of our community but we need one that comes from and is accepted by the community.
