Nice video :D I'd be careful though those battery cells looked quite bloated and could be a fire hazard. Id also recommend brighter and more consistent lighting for a tutorial, none the less, great video and thank you!

Thank you, and I am glad you found the video useful. Yes, well spotted, the cells were well beyond expiry and no longer held much charge. Thank you for the feedback. The recording was somewhat spontaneous and hence the poor lighting, sorry about that! My second video attempt was a little bit better (for interest - Dell Latitude 5580 : kzfaq.info/get/bejne/h6phga59ttzXnH0.html ), but I found the ring LED lights I had too weak to make an impression and I now have a set of adjustable studio lights to really ramp up the lighting.

Hi. Nice, the 7600u runs well and with 32GB of RAM you will be able to multitask well. There is another laptop that I can recommend in the same price class. The Dell Latitude 5580 (ideally with the Intel i7 7820HQ, 4 Core!). Similar in overall performance but it can come with a 1080p touch screen which is quite nice. (I have a thermal video planned for the 5580 also).

@@BIGBOYTACO Nice, you got that laptop for a great price! With patience you can pick up these laptops for a great price. The top spec Dell Latitude 5580 with i7-7820HQ and touch screen varies in price a lot! Cheapest one on ebay (shorturl because ebay links are massive; link may not work forever, ebay search terms were: Dell Latitude 5580 15.6" FHD i7-7820HQ ): shorturl.at/uxEJ6 . Solid performance. These laptops are built for handling high workloads.

I'd only be using that little drop you put on at the end - and nothing more! Good video though - but why so dark?
@racerrrz
@racerrrz Жыл бұрын
Hi there. Fair point there! I am use to Xeon processors which have a fair bit more surface area. haha. This was recorded at my computer desk and there was only one room light above me. The latest installment of the same type of video had 3x LED ring lights, yet it was still somewhat poorly lit! For reference: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/h6phga59ttzXnH0.html ).

Sorry about that! I decided to film at my computer desk for this video and I had only a small ring LED light at the time. I have since invested in some proper LED light panels (Nanlight brand) to give way better lighting on the subject!

can i only change the thermal paste ?
@racerrrz
@racerrrz 7 күн бұрын
Their replacement is normally required, but if you are really careful with the removal process you likely could just replace the thermal paste. I found the thermal pads that they used to be really fragile and they had a tendency to tear on removal. You should be able to obtain some thermal pad on the cheap if you have access to ebay etc. I recall spending ~$3-7 USD for a decent amount of thermal pad.

Any way you might be able to help cool down the CPU more than just to 60 - 75 degrees?
@racerrrz
@racerrrz 9 ай бұрын
Hi. Laptops are just not able to dissipate enough heat due to the small contact surface of the CPU IHS and heatsink. The best solution I have found is to use a quality thermal paste (my best one was Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut), ensure you have quality thermally conductive silicone and have a USB fan to place underneath the laptop for extra airflow.

I want to try putting a 7490 board in a 7480, just cuz I want to see if it works. Has anyone done this?
@racerrrz

I have not had the pleasure of a motherboard swap for a laptop, but generally the more modern Dell laptops are well assembled. Doing a quick check online it appears to be feasible, but likely no-one has actually done it/made a video about doing it. This may be of use in your quest: www.reddit.com/r/Dell/comments/12914x7/can_i_swap_a_dell_latitude_7480_mobo_for_a_7490/ The main limit seems to be screen panel differences, but I am sure there will be other minor differences as well. As long as the board fits, and most of the connections match up, it might be possible.

I am sorry to hear your laptop is still running hot. What thermal paste did you use? Did you replace the thermal silicone pads? I would recommend Thermal Grizzly Kryoaut paste - it's the best paste I have used. The main problem with laptops is the small surface area and compact design of the heat sink. The only other fix would be using a fan that you can place underneath the laptop. You get special cooling lads that have a fan and they are powered via USB. That would be the only other thing that can help. To get you started - here are some Amazon links (affiliate links - I earn a small commission if you buy using these links): Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut: amzn.to/482tZxm Cooling Pads: amzn.to/4bwleyo Let us know if how you get on, hopefully the laptop temperatures do come down a bit.

Well done! I am glad to hear it was software related, that means your fix should now give you good thermals. MX-4 is a decent paste but if you want to remove another 3-5'C try out Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut - I found it was ~5'C better than Arctic Silver which was my tried and tested paste for many years.

Great idea. I did check up on it but I could never get it operational. I presumed HP either dropped support, or restricted access, but it might require an email to verify! I'll do some more research and report back. If I can get it working it will be well worth the video! The next video is in operation, Z840 Z Coolers / 3D Vapor cooler install, plus thermal testing before and after fitment!

Just picked one up for $110 thing is mint, has the i5 7300u cpu with 8 gigs of Ram. What do you recommend me to do to it next? Am I able to do 2666mhz ram on it?
@racerrrz
@racerrrz Жыл бұрын
Nice! That was a good price for the performance of the laptop. I would recommend upgrading to 16GB of RAM because that tends to help remove the memory limit annoyance when you are trying to do multiple things at once. Unfortunately the 2666Mhz RAM will not match the 7480's 7300U CPU. They are best paired with the slower / cheaper 2133Mhz RAM. For the price you have a solid performer. The only other upgrade that is well worth it is a decent PCIe 3.0 based NVMe (like the Samsung 970 Evo Plus). Keep an eye on the temperatures - something like HWiNFO is very useful for this. If the temps start climbing it might be time for a thermal regrease. I plan to test Thermal Grizzly's Kryonaut in my next laptop regrease.

@racerrrz
@racerrrz Жыл бұрын
@@tsuinburedo8247 No problem, I am sure you will enjoy it. For the RAM, check the current RAM module's specifications (the main detail to match is cache latency; something in the order of "DDR4-2133 Non-ECC SoDIMM CL15"; with CL being the memory latency) and see if you can obtain one that is matched with your current one. You could also go for 1x 16GB RAM module but 2x8GBs should work fine also. Good luck!

@@racerrrz I was looking at the ‘Crucial 16GB DDR4-2400 SODIMM’ say it’s the CT16G4SFD824A set. Would this be a perfect replacement?
@racerrrz
@racerrrz Жыл бұрын
@@tsuinburedo8247 Yes the Crucial module you found will work. The RAM will operate at 2133MHz instead of its maximum rated speed of 2400MHz, but if you end up upgrading in the future you might be able to transfer the RAM module into another laptop also. The most optimal slot will be "DIMM A" for a single module (you'll see it printed on the laptop PCB / motherboard).

can u charge non thunderbolt model via type c ?
@racerrrz
@racerrrz 7 ай бұрын
This may vary according to the laptop model but the best way to check will be to go to the original service manual for the laptop. Generally, if the laptop was supplied with a power brick (e.g. 65W charger) and that charger does not have a USB C charging cable then it's unlikely that you can use USB C to charge the laptop. The Latitude 7480 requires a 7.4 mm Barrel connector for charging, and it does have a USB C port that can be used to charge devices like phones etc., but it will not charge via USB C cable.
