You can pinpoint any position on earth using the simple grid system of latitude and longitude. Don't let this stuff scare you. It's really quite simple!

great video! I feel one thing was left out though... the higher latitude you are at on the chart the more you shouldn't use the horizontal lines on the chart to measure distance. each tick mark on the horizontal lines (lines of latitude) are only truly 1nm at the equator, as you go north or south the lines get closer together and therefore introduce error if using them to measure distance... said differently try to always use the vertical lines (lines of longitude) to measure distance on a chart.

On one point for continuities sake... when the lat and longitude are being described by voice it can be confusing to be reading N39 -1', W95 -13' whilst it is being said 39 degrees and 1 minute North and 95 degrees - 13 minutes West. I get what you meant it. Hope you see what I mean. Good presentation nonetheless.

Wow Russ, that was a very positive learning experience. I've watched 10 videos and still did not quite get it. You are the very teacher. I have one question? I'm taking my Part 107 test on Thursday. One of the questions is this. You have been hired to inspect the tower under construction at 46.9N and 98.6W, near Jamestown Regional (JMS). How would I find this location written like this. What is the equation for the opposite. You said divide it by 60. Would I x's it by 60. ALSO: I don't know how to find a place that asks me a question like this next one here: You have been contracted to inspect towers located approximately 4NM southwest of the Sioux Gateway (SUX) How do I know what 4NM is and how do I know how far south or west I look. How do I find this tower? Often the question just shows a part of the map with no guide to help you understand the scale or where or how to look. Thank You, Tom

So is it saft to say. To find the minutes of the longitude line, you count on the lattitude line, and to find the minuets on the latitude line you count on the longitude line?

The confusing part is that youre reading the 39° latitude but youre using the longitude line, and the 95° longitude is using the horizontal line. Idk why its confusing

It can be confusing. Latitudes are measured from the equator to the poles. The only reason that lines of longitude are involved is because that's where the tic-marks are shown. Think of them as a ladder.

Latitude lines are derived from elevation angle measurements of Polaris. Elevation angles require a horizontal plane (flat earth). Welcome to flat earth!!!

If the earth was flat, the "elevation angles" (declination) would be the same everywhere. Your suggestion requires a spherical earth.

@@GoldSealFlight That's a fallacy. You have nothing to back your baseless assertion that elevation angles of stars don't change with distance on a flat surface. You cannot measure elevation angles without flat earth geometry. All stars drop 1° every 69 statute miles away from the geographical position of the star measured on a flat earth, not a curved baseline (globe). You cannot measure an elevation angle with a curved baseline (globe).

Correct. Celestial navigation doesn't require knowing the distance of stars is because they are all so unimaginably far away. If you think that a star's elevation changes when moving toward it or away from it on a flat surface, that star would have to be very close. Regarding the rest of your comment about angles measured from a curved surface, look up the word "tangent". So, back to my previous question. How far away from earth do you believe Polaris is?
