How does a country with some of the planet's largest resources of almost everything "manage" to treat it's citizens like this? 125$...135$?I get that the cost of living is lower but 135$ pension is pitiful by any standard.

Because there are much more important thinks, that must be payed first: Golden toilets and mansions for Gosudar, Megayacht and mansions on the west for his band of robbers and manipulators. You also need some money for denacification of other countries. And the few bucks that remains goes for the normal people...

You have compare their pensions to the cost of living. In NYC, pensions are high, but an apartment like theirs would have cost at least $1800 a month in the Bronx, at least, $2300 in Manhattan.

I lived in East Germany (GDR) and many would say things are definitely better than under socialism (it wasn't communism). I will tell you this: the interpersonal relationships are what I miss the most. The sharing or good things and bad, the sense of community and the unbelievable resilience of the human spirit when faced with daily adversity. I miss the days of Communism/Socialism for things that were good. It is important to never lump the various parts into one pile. Many people my age would gladly go back to having no VCRs, cellphones or internet if we had all the simple things that made us happy living in a managed 'shortage' economy. When I see these videos I get almost homesick for those days of simplicity. In 1989 the East Germans sold their souls and their identity for bananas, western cars and Marlboros. Many of them would go back and change that decision of they could: over 40 years later they are still second-class citizens.

Remark: 80-90 roubles per month was a low-level salary and the pension rent. The college teachers had got 140-160 roubles per month, whereas the factory workers could make 200-250. For comparison, the prices were low. A "brick" of bread (1 pound or 0.5 kilogram) was 0.20 rouble. One kilogram of raw potato was 0.16 rouble. A tram ticket for any distance was 0.03 rubles, a city bus ticket 0.05 rouble. The appartment was free, and the city administration was giving it to new families without pay. Water, gas and electricity were several roubles per month. And yes, the life was so quiet, that the road police wasn't equipped with guns or gummi sticks, only with small 'zebra wands' (painted in white and black) to show direction. Can you imagine this?

I am amazed that the Senior Citizens are treated "this" well- hear me out..They pay no rent or mortgage, utilities are no cost. Here in the Midwest, just those 2 services alone cost me 1400.00 a month. No, I don't have AC either. 2 fans. As far as the bathroom goes, most housing here in American has the shower, toilet and sink in the same room. The kitchen looks adequate to me as well. In the federally subsidized Senior Citizens aparts here in the Midwest, apartments are about the same size with the exception of the bedroom. At 35 sq. ft, I doubt there is a bedroom. All in all, looks OK to me..in fact, I'm willing to bet that anyone in Ukraine thats been bombed would view that apartment as the Taj Mahal. Peace.

I support sanctions! Russia should not be attacking a free country. Ukrainian people are fighting hard they don’t want to live in Russia they want to be free and have their own country. So it should be. I don’t blame Ukrainian people if Russia rolled into the USA every citizen would take up arms and fight back. We all have guns here or can get them. Many women here are good shots as well as men. I don’t blame Ukraine. Americans would do the same thing. On the other hand I do like Russian people so it’s nothing personal at all. Americans would fight to the death to be free. That’s just how it is. Russia is a beautiful country and I love your culture and people. You are free to live under the government you have. If you don’t like it you can fight too. Like all government it has it’s good points and bad I’m sure.

Majority of Russians especially older generation own their own apartment/house, they also have free medicine and taking that education is free too - no financial pressure due to mortgages or consumer loans, the utilities and electricity bills are times lower than in Europe and US and still the government subsidises half of the costs for pensioners. They complain how low their pension is but never mention that it is fully disposable income and all the benefits they get from the state, it may strike you as impossible but in many respects Russian pensioners are richer than their western counterparts. And yes they can both work and receive the pension, and their experience is highly demanded in the labour market (in fact Russia imports a lot of workforce from abroad).

Medical coverage, utilities, or for food. That SOUNDS wonderful, right? Well, the reason is, besides only getting the money I worked for, the tables and formulas "they" are using are relying on data that is well over 15 years old and everyone knows how inflation has drained people luke me, but with no help on the horizon. I was very impressed with both women in your video. Strong, adaptable and dignified. Thank you

Are you kidding? My mother, in Florida ,worked since she was 14years old and retired at 77years old. That was 6years ago. Her social security barely gives her enough money to live. If it was not for my sister and myself, she would be starving. Additionally, she has to pay for her medicare gap. Why can't Americans cannot see the flaws in their own country? And, see what we can do better by learning from other nations? At least, Russia has free healthcare, and subsidize housing and heat. And, they can retire in a relatively younger age. Why are American blind to the suffering in their own nation?

@@greencat8949 You see, the stinking rich in America do not want the less privileged to enjoy the quality of life they can pay for out of pocket change. When you have a govt that offers you a better quality of life, the war begins….it’s communist….it’s liberals…..it’s every thing but not the quality of life you should be having. I live on the continent about 9 hours flying away from you. We pay for our quality of life too but we get it! I became ill two years ago and I didn’t have to pay a cent for 3 major surgeries and radiation afterwards. All I paid for was my $5/day contribution to my hospitalization. If I was in the unemployment bracket I wouldn’t have to pay a cent. See, this is what President Obama was trying to give you, yet all you did was complain, reject and threatened. Of course it isn’t perfect here either but it’s very close to perfect. I could go on and on but I think you’ll understand. When I visit the USA and see people in their 80s still working, it reminded me why I was never drawn to that country.

Thank you for the time we spent with your family. Wonderful. Communism is more intrusive into your life but freedom allows you that bit of choice, like religion. Your life under Russia can be like your life during the USSR where rules were followed more inclusively rather than forgotten. Ladies I truly enjoyed the company, the food and drink and the education on Russian life and the cost of living there. Bless you all.

Thank you for sharing. It seems like a very hard life. And i think due to recent events, unfortunately life will be a lot harder now for the people of Russia. Communism was terrible in the USSR, and this life now does not seem much better

If I was a pensioner I would move into one of those abandoned Russian cabins with the fancy scrollwork winders and fix the Russian oven, and get a milk cow or goat, and set up housekeeping. I would paint icons and paint religious statues. People would visit me, and they too would move into all the empty Russian cottages with fancy winders. We would paint all the scroll work winders, and trimmings, and doors. Mow down the grass, or rustle some cattle to become village cattle to mow down the grass, and then people would come and visit us.

Well they are living better then we do in the USA on retirement. They are young I can’t retire until 67 the earliest. I’ll starve if I retire. The USA doesn’t take care of tge elderly. Nobody cares what happens to them here.

In USA, you cannot retire on social security unless you are willing to live on the streets and stave to death.

Yes it's a strange world...old canadians women share some characteristics in the way they live in the religious way maybe...but most retirees womens in canada live in better conditions of living...maybe is in some far away regions it's possible...but not in the cities...the pension is better for the standard of living...most canadians have a better retirement than that...sad to say sorry...it's strange to see how they live in some others countries...it's sad what's happening about ukraine and russians have to understand why...

It’s not too bad, it isn’t huge but then it’s light and airy in the living room compared to many Russian apartments. So many are dark, tatty looking and covered in the typical heavy rugs s on the walls in typical Babushka style. This is pleasant and light and airy and she has her windows onto the balcony to open for fresh air. Loving the little dogs, absolutely adorable.
