i want to start of this comment with saying that i dont want to offend anyone this is just what i have found in my personal research. this is my defense for splash mountain and i touch on many toppics in this comment. PLEASE read it all the way through. alright here we go. When I was 11 and heard splash mountain was being changed I started to weep, when my dad got home I could barely tell him what was happening, I remember riding on it for the first few times and being terrified in the laughing place because I new what was coming, seeing the thorns at the bottom of the drop, then seeing all my favorite characters singing zip a dee doo da at the end. And I know I’m not the only one who feels the same. I’m 14 now so I hope you can trust my word. The save splash mountain petition got 100,000 signes while the get rid of splash mountain only got 20,000 signes that’s roughly 80% of people, and I know what your going to say everyone, Walt said the parks would always be changing and adapting, and while I’m not by any means saying Walt was rong but I don’t think Walt would get rid of a ride that is that beloved by that many people. If you wanted to live by that saying the way disney is doing right now you could get rid of the tiki room, it’s a small world, autopia / speedway, carousel of progress, great moments with mr lincon, peter pan, tea cups, and so many other classic attractions, even some of the e tickets. Walt said to plus the park but he wouldn’t change a beloved attraction 80% of people love so much. when walt said that the parks would always be changing and addapting i dont think he meant it to go this far. And it’s not just sentiment it’s the actual reason behind it that’s dumb. song of the south is set in the recontstruction era after the slaves were set free. uncle Remus gets up and leaves the plantation at one point. uncle Remus is a free man in the movie and it was meant to be this way from the begining. as well by disney not letting song of the south exist disney is erasing black cinema history. James basket who played uncle Remus was the first black man to win an Oscar, for this movie. not just him but your also earasing the legacy of nick stewart (his family have touched heavily on this and are very upset) and Johnny lee. song of the south was also the first movie to show black people in a good light opposed to older films that usually showed them in comedic rolls. uncle Remus is the hero of the story. It also shows a white and a black kid being best friends together. Walt didn’t have a racist bone in his body, and any sterio types used in the movie weren't out of hate but out of appreciation of black culture. he was trying to preserve black culture not make fun of it. you wouldn't make a western and have everyone speak in an irish accent, in the same way you would'nt make a movie from the deep south and have all the people not speak in a southern accent. he wasn’t trying to create division he was trying to bring people together. going further if you want to bring up the 1947 protest's, the people who were protetesting held signes that said this "We want films on Democracy not Slavery" and "Don't prejudice children's minds with films like this" the reason they were protesting was because they didn't know that the movie took place in the reconstruction era (look up "when does song of the south take place" if you dont believe me) i would aslo like to talk about james basket not being let into the movie theater. georgia was a seggragated state, so james basket was not aloud in the theater. that doesn't have anything to do with whats in the movie. its not the movies falt he wasn't aloud in. Yes it does suck he wasn't aloud into the theater. but that wasn't disney's falt, it was Georgia's, you can't blame walt or song of the south for what happened. it comes down to Georgia, not song of the south. now about the tar baby scene, i could deffinetly see how this would be offensive but the way the term is used in the movie it isn't tyde to its slang. in the seen brer bear and brer fox make a small figure out of tar they call a "tar baby" to trap brer rabbit. it has no connection with its slang in the scene. the slang "tar baby" originated from the original uncle Remus storys from joel chandler haris in this story, and was not meant as an offensive term for black people, it was used for a story about getting out of sticky situations. it wasn't used as slang for black people until several decades later. this is a strech but i think walt could have specially picked this story to show in the movie to change what the term "tar baby" meant and to hide kids from what its actual meaning was in the 40s. going further, I’m tired of people trying to dig so deep into things to try to find something offensive. like how people are calling zip a dee do dah racist for possibly maybe being linked to an old minstrill song called zip c**n because they share the letter z and the word day in it, do me a favor listen to zip c**n and then listen to zip a dee do dah, they share no context whatsoever, Walt was constantly making up words for songs, bip a dee bopodi boo, Super cali fragi listick expi ala doshis. And so on and so fourth. Zip a dee do da and zip c**n have nothing in common, the lyric their saying zip a dee do dah is related to isnt even in every version of the song, and the actual whistling toon for zip c**n is in steamboat willi, steamboat willi is 1000 times more closely ralated to zip c**n than zip a dee do dah and steamboat willi isn't getting any crap for it. there were so many black singers when song of the south came out who adored zip a dee do dah and recreated it, including Louis Armstrong. Going further, if people want to dive as deep into things as their going, princess and the frog was a grims fairy tale who often used anti semetic stereotypes. the nazi’s used grims tales for campaigns. Also disney said they went to Avery island in Louisiana to base their salt dome theme off of, well guess what AVERY ISLAND WAS A SLAVE CAMP. disney is not being iclusive. they are basing they're ride on a salt dome that was worked by actual slaves and a story from a story teller who helped the nazi's. disney says they're being inclusive but in my opinion they'er being more unenclusive than ever. disney shouldn't get rid of a ride that 80% of people find beloved. It’s not a good look for Disney I’m sorry. this is just my opinion but it also just kinda seems like they are grassping at straws trying to find something in loisiana thats not flat (no offense to people who live in Louisiana). and in my opinion it doesn't make much sense why a former resturant owner would buy a salt dome. and if you look up pictures of salt domes they look nothing like their consepts or like splash mountain. and just the fact that they were nieve enough to base the ride on avery island that was a slave camp with real slaves. also this is random but i dont think it makes sense to have a prince named navine who lives in a far off country to have a little brother named ralphy who playes drums, and not just any drums but drums exlusivly found in Louisiana even though he didn't grow up there. im not trying to offend anyone, this is just my opinion and what i have found in my research. i am not tying to hate on tiana's buyou adventure, im sure it would be a great ride, but i just dont think it should replace a ride that 80% of people love and adore. this is all just my opinion and i hope i didn't offend anyone, but i hope you read all the way through.
