This is part of the line from Halwill Junction to Launceston then back from Wadebridge to Halwill. From a video by Jim Clemens.
(www.michaelclem...)
For the full version Jim visited North Devon and Cornwall often in the early 1960s, sometimes using the Atlantic Coast Express.
This is a classic journey on the Atlantic Coast Express to the far flung reaches of the Southern Railway known as the Withered Arm, the part of the route west of Exeter.
Join this celebrated train at Waterloo and travel via Basingstoke, Salisbury and Sidmouth Junction to Exeter Central, seeing the line from the train and lineside in steam days, no single lines then.
On to the Withered Arm itself to Barnstaple Junction and Ilfracombe with virtually every station being seen.
Return to Barnstaple and travel south via Instow and Bideford to Torrington with 02 and Ivatt tank engines.
Forward to busy Halwill Junction before an in depth visit to the Bude branch and its harbour line.
T9's still visited here in 1961.
Further west via Launceston to Wadebridge, more classic steam with Beattie Well tanks, and T9's to Padstow.
Bodmin is visited, both General and North stations.
Return via Bere Alston, Gunnislake and Okehampton to Exeter Central.
There is a visit to Penzance by a Bulleid Pacific, steam once again at Barnstaple Victoria Road.
This has to be the definitive video of the Southern in Devon and Cornwall superbly filmed in those sunny days of the early 1960s all in colour.

My family moved to Ashwater in Devon in early 1969. I remember many walks along the line which was complete except for the tracks having just been removed. It was sad then to see it had all gone and I've always regretted that I never got to go on this line. Many mixed emotions watching this footage.

No longer being able to access Padstow due to the Beeching closures was one example of the Beeching closures going way too far!

Yeah it was but I don't know what the alternative could have been. The harsh reality of business is that if something's losing money it gets scrapped. Propping up failing businesses with government funds rarely ends well, look at the whole BMC/BL saga.

@@buggs9950 Some of the lines were made to look less viable than they actually were though. There was manipulation of figures. Choosing to count passangers on a quiet Saturday instead of a busy schoolday for example. Some one had put out contracts to demolish the hardware before things could be discussed properly I heard.

We'd been left behind by other countries and had to catch up. I remember our main line stations as dirty filthy places, couldn't touch anything without being covered in soot. Imagine having to rely on steam today. No coal left anyway and going to have to import for our heritage lines. I am as nostalgic as anyone but times change and it was a head in the sand attitude that helped put us do far behind other nations.

@@sarahstrong7174 The survey of passengers and freight took place on the week ending 23 April 1961. This is what the Beeching 1 Report was based on. The dates were well clear of the Easter Holidays of that year.

Although the Beeching closures were economically necessary the Beeching closures went way too far. Cornwall and Devon suffered as a result of being left with fragmented dysfunctional railway network due to the Beeching closures that meant many tourists and holiday makers could no longer access one time popular locations by rail from London.

@@skyboswell A one-word answer will not suffice. Beeching suggested pruning the railways because they were losing lots of money. It isn't quite true to say we have "abandoned" such pleasureds, there are many rail trips , using restored rolling stock, on offer - at a price. How many of us are willing to pay the price?
@skyboswell
@skyboswell 3 жыл бұрын
@@mikeyaureliush9017 But what's needed here are not pleasure trips but a proper rail service for the folk who live here. Difficult now to reintroduce, even if it were possible, because of course everyone has to have their own cars in order to get around in North Cornwall. Once in a car, it's difficult to persuade folk back out onto the railways. I'm sad and sorry that the swingeing cuts in the 1960s have brought such devastation. Beeching was not a disinterested pary, he had serious interests in the road lobby so one has to question why he was put in charge of the operation to cut the trains, when it ought to have been a neutral party? With hindsight, it can be seen as a deliberate move as the government were committed to more roads happening, thus appointing Beeching meant the work would be done.

@@skyboswell I dont think there are enough people in the area who would use the trains, so the revenue from fares would not be enough to finance the operation of trains. I think it was Marples, the transport minister at the time, who hsd direct interest in road projects, but that doesn's alter the fact that the railways were losing a great deal of money and something had to be done about that.
