Nils gives a demonstration and description of the Launch Lab. The experiment is a variation on a ballistic pendulum--instead of a projectile colliding with the pendulum, it is ejected from it. The platform consists of a section of Masonite, a clothes pin, a rubber band, a thread, a match, and is suspended with fishing line. The projectiles are stainless steel and (low density) wood spheres. Students can use a video camera to track the motion of the system after the stored energy of the rubber band is released.
The video clips used in this video are in 240 fps and can be downloaded from here
drive.google.c...
The platform is roughly 30 cm long. The steel ball is roughly 200 grams.

Metal ball takes longer to repell because of the waight - which leaves more force and time tor recoil

Bizarre! The initial spring PE the system is "primed" with is the same (rubber band stretched equally in both cases) so.....I don't get it.....but then they indicated its not trivial.

aren’t you potentially losing energy from the floating stand?

As is the case with any ballistic pendulum, kinetic energy will be conserved as the platform swings upward.

you would be losing final kinetic energy from the ball comparing to a stationary launch, but like Harvard said, that lost energy is in the platforms movement
