I will never forget seeing Janis twice in 1969. I've seen a lot of performances and she was the best! I'm still in love with her, still cry when I hear Me and Bobby McGee.

What I love about Janis is that she soared way above all who shunned her. She did it because it's who she was and she went for what she wanted. She didn't get famous to throw it in their faces. Sure wish she was still here.

@broskijohansson Janis’ family did not watch her destroy herself. During her final visit to Port Arthur, Texas, the guys who accompanied her to her parents’ house drank until they passed out. Janis drank in her parents’ house but not nearly as much as the guys. You can find this information in Myra Friedman’s book Buried Alive. Peace.

I remember faintly when she died, I was 12 years old in Vancouver Canada - sometimes called 'San Francisco North' - my older sister age 20 at the time and her friends were talking about it, and what it represented as a tragedy, socially for the times. Although I profess I was never a fan of J.J., I can seen NOW, 50 years later, how hugely significant she was as a symbol of grass roots rebellion, in most of my life I was mostly a conformer to society - unless something was really outrageous - now as I age I see how full of nonsense and injustice much of society is.........for instance, European colonialism is still viewed and taught in many education systems in Western Nations as benevolent and paternal, when in reality it was exploitive and subjugative, this is just one example, there are multitudes more. Janis couldn't possibly have said that because it makes absolutely no sense. No one who grew up in Port Arthur, as Janis did, would say that PA is "20 miles up it", since Beaumont is upriver from PA. Being closer to the Gulf of Mexico, PA is more analogous to a butthole, than Beaumont. But then, maybe Janis was just really bad at geography. Ha ha.

Jeff Cory I don’t think the audience appreciated his vile anecdote, bragging about how his friend wanted to use her body in exchange for a recording of her song. The audience gasped. I hope he felt shame then. What a horrible man. You’re right, it’s no wonder Janis turned to drugs to escape from bs people like this. Who knows what would’ve happened and where she’d be today if she had people who truly cared for her helping her through her struggles and her fame.

@Julie Furaitor - I read the 1992 edition of Buried Alive. Myra Friedman came across as obsessed with describing Janis’ drug and alcohol abuse. After Myra resigned from her job at Albert Grossman’s management company, she refused to get another job in an office. She mooched off Janis’ memory from 1973 until her death in 2010.

Not a good book at all. It was very disrespectful of her memory.

cwb0051 Can’t really compare. Don’t know about Mozart, but Paul speaks of his brother often. Paul also had a wonderful upbringing. His father taught him to play piano, and fully supported Paul in his endeavours. Janis didn’t have that support.

Even after being bullied, when she could have turned cold and hateful herself. No, instead she touched the lives of so many people in such a positive way that you have no idea of her impact.
