The fifth episode of our Laurel Canyon miniseries, by Wolf River Music Television. A Journey Thru History and Song 1965-1974 explores the inner workings of the music scene that seemed to explode out of this area north of Hollywood in the mid-1960's and featured legendary musicians and groups such as: The Byrds, The Mamas and The Papas, Buffalo Springfield, Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, CSNY, The Doors, Frank Zappa, Carole King, The Eagles, Gram Parsons, Love, Jackson Browne, The Monkees, etc. plus music industry giants such as David Geffen, Elliot Mintz, Jim Ladd, Ron Stone and Paul Rothchild. See the famous Canyon Country Store, Love Street, the Tom Mix Cabin, the Houdini Estate, and all of the other places made famous by the likes of Jim Morrison, Cass Elliot, John Lennon and others. We'll even touch on some of the darker elements that were lurking within the shadows such as the Manson Family and the inevitable evils of cocaine and heroin and they crept into the scene, causing havoc and destruction. No matter how many times this subject of music coming out of Laurel Canyon has been repeated in other documentaries, there's always something new to learn and discover. The stories are endless and some of it can be surprising and even downright shocking. Please be sure to watch all eight episodes. Each one has a different theme and a different set of characters and events. www.wolfrivermusic.com/

Hey cool! So was I right then, in my assessment that it was on the ground floor? NOT up in the back and on the third floor, as some others have believed? And it WAS in the house on Appian Way and NOT at some other house over on Wonderland Ave?

I am convinced...having lived through the 60's...and wandered Laurel Canyon that it wasn't the artists, the singers, the song writers ...the music. It was the energy of the Canyon that drew them, released their energy into the universe by way of song.....time changed in the Canyon. The Canyon and Time nurtured these wonderful people, their energy.. Am not surprised the "polertguise" chased Marlyn Manson out of the Canyon..and not surprises at the reports of who the Canyon holds dear.continues to hold space for....those spirits who chose to remain.. To say Laurel Canyon is magical is alluding to just the tip of the iceberg...a time in space none other that changed lives, and indeed by osmosis, our world. I love this series..

On August 2, 1968 I saw Jim Morrison and The Doors in concert in Cleveland, Ohio. That summer I had turned 16 years old. I wore my first pair of pierced earrings to the concert and a black Nehru style dress. I remember when Jim asked for a light for his cigarette. Memorable black leather pants!

Dear Bill, I am an almost 68 years old Boomer guy, from Venice (Italy, not Cal !). I discovered by chance your Laurel Canyon series : the people you tell the stories were (and still are !) my musical coming of age heroes. What a wonderful work have you done ! I would like do share some thoughts inspired by your incredible videos : 1. From your footage the beauty of the places shines through: bird's songs, the heath and the smell of vegetation's I can imagine reminds me of the most wonderful mediterranean places we have here, like Portofino or Cinque Terre (but how bad are the ubiquitous garbage bins !!!); 2. I can't stop thinking how much waste of talents and of creative time and opportunities happened around LC in those years, due to "difficult" personalities unable to stay together, but the greatest waste of human resources has been the addiction to hard drugs and booze. Some colleague of mine has worked in Californian Universities, all of them were absolutely shocked by the people easiness in taking drugs in recreational moment AND in everyday situation. How many geniuses we have lost (and still are loosing) to drug abuse in USA ? Why ? This is a real cancer in your society (but here in Italy too, I everyday see drug addict gather in my usual parking lot, waiting for some crack smuggler...); 3. What a sadness, in the end of one of the last videos, seeing the Strip walkways littered by homelesses. We have much the same problem here, but all is due to illegal migrants from Africa or Middle East (Afghan and Syrian the most). We in our young years hope for a better world, with more justice, peace and equity : what has gone bad ? 4. anyway, you brought me happiness and a remind of hope and peace : thank you a lot ! anto

I'm a 40 something gen x'er who grew up in the late 80's-90's era when there was a lot of antipathy and cynicism toward the 60 hippie boomer generation, but I never cared for contemporary culture and what my peers thought, rejected powder puff hair-metal and consequently, wholly immersed my self in the music of The Doors, Byrds, Love, Janis, Airplane et.al and devoured countless books and all the requisite minutiae available in those hazy, pre-internet days. Though my heart lies more with post-punk/darkwave these days, my love for 1960's music hasn't waned. The whole history/culture/aesthetic of Laurel Canyon and it's underlying darkness is still endlessly fascinating. Keep up the good work!

Awesome video.....thanks !! PS: Around 1984ish I was in Vegas and attended the opening night of The NEW Mamas and the Papas at The Sands Hotel. John, Denny, McKenzie Phillips and Elaine McFarlane (took Cass' place, she was from the pop group Spanky and Our Gang). The table I had was next to a table where Michelle Phillips sat with some friends. Also John was on probation for his drug bust and McKenzie Phillips had just been fired from the TV show "One Day at a Time" for cocaine use. One last thing, Scott McKenzie was in the band and sang his hit (written by John Phillips) "Are you going to SAN FRANCISCO. Ticket was I think, maybe $25 and a $20 tip got me a table in the front row, next to Michelle's table. WHAT A NIGHT...it was by luck I was walking by The Sands that day and got tickets.

Windows and doorways are racking due to shifting foundations. This is like the Oakland hills in Alameda county. Shacks built of STEEP hillsides. If there is a plot of land people will build a house on it just to live up in the hills. You think about wild fires and earthquakes. They are finally cutting back trees and brush to make things easier. The high peaked roofs that resemble "faerie" houses resemble the ones demolished near Olivenhain and Leucadia.

That was nifty detective work about Carole's cat! Who would have thought to contradict the actual photographer? This earth-shattering mystery is finally solved, ha ha. Thanks, Billy Columbo. It's quirky stuff like this that helps to makes this series so endearing, along with the solid research. Looking up the provenance of existing houses to determine exactly where Jim Morrison was standing and what he would have been looking at when he wrote 'People are strange'? OMG, the things I didn't know I needed to know! Btw, the instrumental version surprised me with how pretty and beguiling the melody is without Jim's typically strong lyrics.

Chynna Phillips Baldwin is still in recovery from the drug-fueled chaos of her upbringing at the hands of Papa John, and possibly Michelle. Sounds like things were just as bad as far as the relationships she was exposed to. The idea of total personal freedom is romantic and tantalizing, but the reality of it is disastrous for children and other vulnerable people left in the wake of that kind of lifestyle. Children need stability, and stability imposes limits on parents’ lifestyles.

Great story. For some reason, that canyon has been attracting Hollywood film stars and musicians since basically they put an actual road in there. It used to also be a more affordable place to live at a certain point in the 60's and so the young musical community began moving in before many of them became famous and wealthy.

Thank you so much for connecting the dots and bringing this extraordinarily rich history of Laurel Canyon alive. I spent a lot of time in and around that area in the late 70s- early 80s pursuing my own musical passion but never knew even a tiny fraction of the details presented in this series. I gotta say, Michelle Phillips was/is an absolute stunner and I suspect if she batted her lashes at any red blooded male in their 20s it would be really tough to say no and walk away. That level of attraction is both a blessing and a curse, and was at the center of much of The Mammas & the Pappas turmoil. We are fortunate to have the great songs they produced during their time together as a band. Cheers!

Hey! This video is a year old so I didn’t know if you’d see my previous comment or not. Since you did I regret that I didn’t mention how much I enjoy your videos. They are so well done and you are an excellent presenter. You have a pleasant voice and articulate well. (There are a lot of videos, where I like the topic, but not the speaker so much. So, I can’t watch.) I’ve watched several a couple of times just because I find them calming and low key pleasurable.

John Kay (Steppenwolf) lived in Nichols Canyon, adjacent to Laurel Canyon and just down the road from Frank Zappa, from 1969 to 89. John's daughter Shawn was friends with Frank's kids Moon & Dweezil. The cover photo for Steppenwolf's third album, "At Your Birthday Party", of the band sitting at a kitchen table of a burned out, house was taken in Laurel Canyon at the burned out, house of Canned Heat's, Bob Hite.

Yeah, I've seen that album cover and that has to be the one that was right next door to the Joni Mitchell house. She said in an interview once that the house next door burned down and was very close to hers and yet her house didn't burn. That's when she became convinced that her house on Lookout Mountain was "protected" by some higher power.

@@memoryfield Joni Mitchell lived next door to Bob 'The Bear' Hite! To say he was a party animal would be an understatement. I wonder if he was a good neighbor? Henry Diltz did the photo shoot for that Steppenwolf album and made mention of Joni Mitchell being there that day as well.

Another enjoyable episode. The photography & background music add so much to the overall effect. You've obviously put a lot of work into this & it shows. I'm not complaining that you haven't mentioned P.F. Sloan (I didn't expect you to!), but just for the record, according to his memoirs, he had a house (patterned on an English medieval castle) in Wonderland Avenue (or possibly Drive). He also mentions that Phil Ochs had a place off Lomita Drive. Final point: you're the best I've come across on KZfaq for responding to comments. Whether you'll manage to sustain that if & when your subscriptions increase, who knows, but for now, it's appreciated.

Well, we try hard. LOL. Thanks so much for all of your very nice comments. You know, if I were somehow able to get back out there, I think I could do a couple of really good episodes that included: PF Sloan, Phil Ochs, Canned Heat, Linda Ronstadt, probably more of The Byrds especially Gene Clark, Love and Arthur Lee, The Turtles, Bonnie Raitt, Little Feat and Lowell George, more about the Monkees and Peter Tork, and Alice Cooper. That's so much info just right there alone. I just simply ran out of money and ran out of time after 12 full days working in Laurel Canyon. I broke that up into 4 long weekends, driving into LA from where I was working out in Bishop, CA, for the summer. People keep asking me "why did you leave out so and so", "why didn't you give more time to (my musical heroes)", etc. etc. And... well, there's the answer to about 90% of that. p.s. I swear I must have walked (even filmed) PF Sloan's house on Wonderland. There was a really big house that did look like a castle, and I swear I remember filming it on purpose. But of course, I didn't know if it had a history or not.

@@memoryfield It's understandable you should focus on the artistes that are particularly close to your heart. The main thing is, you brought a flavour of the area to people like myself, who have enjoyed the music only from thousands of miles away, enabling me to appreciate how the environment must have inspired the writers & artistes of that time. Your video & commentary have left a legacy as beautiful & lasting as the music itself.

Jill Gibson was the girlfriend of Jan Berry of Jan and Dean, and later Lou Adler. I remember seeing her in a Hullaballoo episode where she had a folk duo thing going on. She could sing, and Michelle Phillips backed her up on that, but I believe John felt she didn't have any chemistry with the band. Knowing John, it was probably because he couldn't get into her pants. I've also read from numerous sources that she is still in the mix on quite a few songs on that 2nd album (uncompensated). Remember, they were still mostly using 4 tracks in those days. She's had her own art and photography thing going on since the 70s.
