editing grps have definitely become more of a status thing. especially with the new wave of groups now, if you're not in a big group or "nonlocal" group ur basically just trashed on, and its so toxic. i've seen grps tell ppl to leave other grps their in because its "local" or "accepts too many people," and i cant even keep up with it anymore.

thank you for appreciating fancam editors! editing fancam edits made myself less stressed, because if i edit transition edits, it puts pressure to me to try and finish it as quick as possible or make myself worry if the next transition fits, etc. so with fancam edits i feel more free and calm cause i also get to explore my creativity with connecting songs and the clips without worrying what transitions i should use next.

i’m in one editing group and it’s literally just ab making happy feel good edits and art so people can go into the tag and watch them when they’re feeling down. there’s no group chat or anything like that, it’s just “if u make a happy edit/art, put it in the tag” which i really appreciate. i’m not a fan of groups that are super strict and “elite” or whatever, though i like the idea of groups where u just edit stuff and maybe talk and bond or whatever over ur shared interest.

i can't even imagine lauren doing those transitions or effects that she really hates 😭

unpopular opinions: 1) I personally don't get why SOME very popular editors act like goddamn celebrities and can't answer any of their dm's when you just ask something. Like I get that more popular editors probably get more DM's but still it kinda sucks when someone acts like they're too popular to answer their requests on insta 2) BOOK EDITS ARE SOOOOOOOO UNDERRATED like can we talk about how much time book editors invest into looking for quotes, fanarts, aesthetics, etc and not that many people even know about book edits !!! 3) You know that feeling when you really wanna get into a certain collab, groupchat (for whatever reasons) and let's say the host has over 10K, they lowkey would never choose anyone for the collab who has like 200 Followers. So many big Editors, or generally Editors care so much about Followers that they'll lowkey only look at your Followers and if you have atleast like 1K or 2K then they look at your generall edits.

It's so weird that people get mad or make fun of editors that don't use ae not everyone has the money for a laptop and not everyone likes editing with it I don't even know why it matters

here's my unpopular opinion: people should stop referring edits that dont have transitions as fancams. because the real meaning of it is literally a fan taking a video of a celebrity. This my experience with the inspo creds thing: SO basically I made a certain intro to my edit with my shakes, nothing special etc. Then some rando demanded inspo creds when 1. I never saw their account or post prior to me posting my edit 2. I literally would never not give creds if you're amazing edit inspired me. So I stood my ground and POLITELY let them know that I never saw their post but then they got a group of their friends to dm and comment on my posts that i was disgusting for not giving creds and then I was forced to give them 'their' creds. It honestly was disgusting that they thought it was right to bully me into giving them creds instead of us having a mature conversation. This editing community is so immature I literally can't.

actually I think the reason why people put watermarks on the person face so that it won’t be stolen, if your water mark is at the bottom left/right or at the top it’s easier to crop out and steal

The editing community has truly changed over the years. I joined back in 2016-2017 the edits didn't even had to be "smooth " and they're still the best edits I've seen. They really had fun back then now people argue over styles 😩

the giving credits part! 100% agree and i wanna add onto that, some editors put fanart in their edits and in the caption they put for the credits like “pinterest” or like “idk but if u know the artist pls lmk in the comments” just NO, if u cant give proper credits then don’t use the fanart!

2:13 I do understand and respect this opinion, but for a lot of us smaller editors it’s so easy for someone to get away with stealing our edit. For someone like Lauren or Vivian, for example, they can get away with putting their watermarks on the bottom because they are well known editors. For us smaller editors, there is always the fear of our edit being cropped and stolen so we kind of are forced to put our watermark in the center if that makes sense. But yeah, I hope that makes sense! :) Edit: but yes I do agree that depending on the placement, size, and font of the watermark; it can look pretty obnoxious at times!

the only time i’ve like an editing grp was because we were all friends before, and we made it just for fun, now editing grps are too weird, there are even grps where u take applications and they can even deny you if they don’t like ur style, I MEAAAAN- wtf is wrong with them 💀

im fine with people remaking my edits, and being inspired by them. Even if it’s a big editor and they will get more recognition, I don’t care. But around October 2020 when the whole Harry Potter shit was happening I started an editing account that I don’t even use anymore, but there’s one edit that I made that got like 11-12k views which is so good imo, but what made me so mad is that one big editor liked the edit, after two days they used the exact same clips, they just changed the order between the first clip and the last one, and used the exact audio I used, with the same character, same concept, literally same everything. And they didn’t even credit me, it got like 100k views, and I dmed the person for credits because they saw my edit so ik it was a remake, they ignored me for like a week, then replied with “so sorry I forgot” it’s just so irritating

THANK YOU AS A VS EDITOR! like, vs is so difficult. it took me a year and a half to figure out past multilayer, transform, etc. i don’t even know how to do velocities. when i tried ae i was able to pick it up in less than a month. i’m not saying ae isn’t hard, i cried a lot trust me, but i always see favoritism to ae since it costs more. so hearing an ae editor actually agree with the vs being harder is like astronomical for me :)

your opinions are SO TRUE I’ve been editing since vine days man shit is tough. Editing groups have became extremely toxic. If you’re try out edit is bad they’ll joke you in the GC. If another group edits are bad they’ll joke you. If a member they never liked leaves, they’ll talk about them. Maybe that’s just the groups i was in and those ones were toxic but yeah….at this point it’s all for the watermark.

I really really love simple edits like AMVs or MVs that lasts like a whole 3 minutes. One thing is that like what she said about fancams. The scene choices. Those are hella hard to find unless you memorize every episode and timestamp of what you wanna convey base on the songs. Those simple edits conveys atmosphere/emotions whilst the typical ig edits that transitions per beat is something that's an eye candy. And for me, the atmospheric edits are so darn good and memorable especially those that do manips.

Im so glad that the small circle of editors I'm in is supportive and not toxic

7:31 i agree with this so much. the editing community recently just all look the same. like most editors have a style that's extremely overused and unoriginal (which isn't bad but nowadays it's overdone) and so it just gets dull. the edits are good but there's nothing new. I admire editors with their own style or their own take on a style, those to me are the best and most valuable.

Ok here me out: there’s this editor called blueakrasia and I love their edits but almost everytime their edits gets popular it’s immediately “THAT [insert character] edit” and it’s said about every single edit that has the same “animated photo” style and not just their edits but also others. While this may be a compliment it’s also kinda shitty since you’re just comparing every edit to that one popular one. (*cough* that one nagito edit *cough*)

ok im not gonna lie, before i thought "Well i dont need necessarily need to be in an editing group" but recently joined an editing group because I thought id try it out and this would get me more friends but like the moment i got in, boom logos here you go, we were asked to choose a part and make an edit for the collab that was suddenly announced for the group, I thought we would idk bond a little more get to know each other a little more, teach one another about editing, talk about the same fandoms we were in but- it was just straight up pressuring the editors in it to get the edit done by the deadline, im not sure if its like this for every group? if its a thing thats usually done? I i felt like if i didnt finish the edits that were wanted by the deadline, the feeling i would get from the group would be like "Then why even join???" it sort of pressures you to be professional and active in the group. Idk i just felt a little disappointed? Kinda changed my entire perspective on editing groups ;-;

I hosted a grp for a year until this week and I pretty much accepted nearly everybody until i hit my limit of people I’m willing to accept at the time. Especially when I was trying to revive it, I accepted everybody regardless of their talent. I understand that most people say that “most” groups are judgmental, but i just want people to know that not all groups are that self absorbed. Plus some logos weren’t exactly the best so I know that people genuinely wanted to join. The main reason i created my grp was to have a sense of community and helping people make friends, and it did!! I also didn’t have monthly or anything of the sort until someone in the group mentioned them. But even when i added them every month, they were more so a suggestion rather than an order. They were always optional unless they were a secret santa and you signed up specifically for the activity. I also only kicked people out if they were severely inactive and basically has 0 messages over the course of two months. I also had an inactivity channel where if you know you’re inactive or are gonna be, you would write your reason and would be safe form being kicked out. I always gave people the benefit of the doubt and I wish other grp hosts did the same because I’ve been in grps where the hair was demanding and it definitely was not fun.

i’ve been editing for like a year and when i started i was like “oh editing groups everyone is in them i should try” and they ruined my mental health so badly. like the people would just make you feel left out? and idk everything about them made me so insecure. i left all of them and have genuinely felt so much better

thanks for the thing about fancam edits. (even though i never actually knew they were called that. yes, i do live under a rock) i do them and and even though it’s mostly lining things up, there’s still making things on beat, coloring, transitions where like one person throws a punch and it cuts to someone else getting hit, you know what i mean. and mostly there’s a layer of thought and i make mine to inspire emotion. like it’s not about the transitions as much as conveying a story. one of my edits like this took me like eleven hours, (i’m not sure if that’s a lot, i’m pretty new to this and idk if it normally takes people that long or not) and it was about the story rather than making it look cool.

i so agree with editing groups opinion. i used to join them simply to make friends and to grow bigger since it’s one of the most effective ways on doing so, but as time passes by i realized just how toxic editing groups (and the community) can be. like, there’s this group i got in that was HUGE and if you’re a part of it you were considered “elite” in the editing community, and it looks nice on the outside, the members are all talented of course and the logos are pleasing to the eye but when you get into their discord they also talk shit about other editors who aren’t in their group, and the group leader even talked shit about her own member and it was such a mess omg i’m glad i grew out of the editing group phase lmao

i agree so much on editing groups. i applied to be in one a lot of editors i admired were part of and i got accepted, i was so happy and very nervous because i didn't want to disappoint the editors who inspired me so much. they'd always share their edits on imsg and we'd all go to like and hype it up. i finally made an edit with the group logo and everything and after contemplating for a bit, i sent it in the gc. i was hoping to get at least some feedback but no one replied or commented and i was kicked out by an admin without any reason shortly after that... it really brought down my confidence and i questioned a lot about my edits, i thought the new one i had made was even better than the edits i applied to the group with, so it really hurt.

More about the groups is that they literally turn editing into something that you have to do instead of doing for fun

Honestly I don't mind editing groups that much and rather love them bc the one's I am in literally have no drama at all and they do help your edit get more views and u can just tell them you're not gonna be active so they don't kick you out, the logos part tho I agree!!

I don't have any experience with editing groups on Instagram, but I know that editing groups (studios) on KZfaq are, in general, a lot more of a generally positive experience. Honestly I think the KZfaq editing community is less crazy than the Instagram editing community. Also, I absolutely agree with what you said about how the general editing community doesn't value individuality as much as it used to. A lot of edits are super predictable (a lot of them are still really good edits, just really predictable) when it comes to transitions and stuff, and you're right about people feeling pressured to live up to the "editing standard." I personally genuinely want to be able to make edits like everyone else simply because that's just what I want to be able to do, but I know that a lot of people are scared to develop their own style or try out a not-so-common transition/effect because it's not part of the generic and widely accepted standard. Finally, I 100% agree with the fact that the smear effect needs to GO. It's just ugly (in my opinion, of course) and I don't know why anyone would want to see or use it.

i’m with you on the whole no transitions edits are so good. personally for me i prefer those edits with no transitions instead of ones filled with transitions. and also the ones with no transitions have more of a story because of the way the editor does it. i edit both ways but doing those simple edits is so much fun and really easier.

YESS! Videostar is so much harder than after effects! I used to use vs but now I switched over to ae about a month ago, and I was also confused about vs graphs , but ae graphs are so much more simple and wayyy more easier to use. And doing transitions overall in ae are easier

i like being in the one editing group i joined because it’s small and everyone has just clicked since day one- i also have friends from another editing group i was in but got kicked out of and we still support each other and have bonds so i guess it would depend on how prominent an editing group is

I personaly am in an editing group and I agree with the logo obssesion. I was obssesed with them back in 2018 and would joins tons of groups only for the logos. But the worst with that is that it can literally ruin your self-confidence when you're not choosen, and the pression i was putting to myself because of the groups. I had to do so much edits for monthlies with a special theme that i couldn't even edit what and who I wanted. After that I took a long break and now i'm only in one group, i've never used the logo and it's only to talk with other editors, help eachothers. Anyways thx for the video it was amazing as always!

my opinion: i personally believe that giving credit for using someone's scenepack is kinda useless and let me explain why. those packs are definitely useful and take a lot of time to make, no one can doubt that, but the amount of people that could make a scenepack with the same clips makes crediting useless because i could download someone's scenepack and credit another person for it, or not even credit anyone because no one would know that i did not look every single clip up myself
