Hey friends! Today I'm making a shirred sun dress inspired by the Hillhouse Nap Dress!
Fabric I used:
Laurel Pattern: riflepaperco.com/laurel-mint-...
Garden Party Pattern: riflepaperco.com/petite-garde...
Inspiration Dress: www.hillhousehome.com/product...
Measurements:
Front/Back (Cut 2): Width: Bust + 2"; Length: 25"
Top Tier (Cut 2): Width: Front/Back Width + 25% of that number (36" + 9" = 45")
Length: 13"
Hem Ruffle Cut 3): Width: Width up top tier; Length: 6.5"
Straps (Cut 2): Length: Measure across shoulder x 2 +1" (12" x 2 + 1" = 25")
Width: 6"

Ah, I love this so much more than the pattern I have. I think it's McCall's or something. The straps on this are way easier than the sleeves I was trying to do! It's been sitting in my closet for at least like 6 months unfinished cause I didn't want to try and fix the sleeves. 😂 I think I'm ready now.

Hi Lauren, Beautiful make! So neat and I love the techniques! One thing that may help is to put a rubber drawer lining and then your serger on top to stop it from sliding. I used a dining place mat for my serger with a pretty design and it looks cute but a drawer or chest liner will also work (probably even better!). ❤️❤️

Hi! I love this dress and am excited to try it 😍 I’m currently pregnant and wondering if you think I should add more “ease” to the front/back pieces to allow more room for a bump? Or do you think the amount of gathering accounted for here will be good enough? I definitely will keep the waistline/stop the shirring a bit higher for pregnancy. Thanks!

A great spring/summer dress I’d like to give this a go. I did notice however that the dress goes up slightly at the front hem . For a larger busted woman it will probably lift even further. This should be a consideration when cutting out don’t you think?
@LaurenJohnson
@LaurenJohnson 3 жыл бұрын
Great consideration Hazel! I tried the dress on to take a look, and I think the reason it is raising in front is actually that I have the neckline pulled up a bit! Theoretically as long as the measurements are based around the bust measurement it should still work!

Thank you so much for this tutorial! I have about the same bust measurement as you (about 33”) so I went ahead and just use the same measurements you provided in the example. But the dress turned out huge. The shirred part is so wide that it just can’t stay on my body. Shirring looks normal and I did use the iron to shrink it a little bit. But it’s still really big. The shirred part is 18.5” wide laying flat without being stretched. Do you know what I did wrong? Would really appreciate your input. Thank you!
@LaurenJohnson
@LaurenJohnson 3 жыл бұрын
Hi there, thank you so much for watching, and I'm sorry to hear about this issue! I just checked the measurement on one of my dresses, and it was 12.5" inches across. Did you use a similar lightweight fabric? I've learned from a few people on Instagram that if the fabric is a bit thicker, it won't gather quite as much! Another consideration could be the type of shirring elastic-- some of them aren't quite as stretchy as others which I've just learned! I use both Dritz and Guttermann, but prefer Dritz. I hope we can get it fixed-- let me know if this is helpful at all!
@liaoclara320
@liaoclara320 3 жыл бұрын
@@LaurenJohnson thank you so much for your reply! I did use a lightweight fabric, and the Dritz elastic thread. That’s interesting how much more shirred your bodices end up being! I also noticed on your DIY smocked summer top video, you used the width of 26.5” for the bodice versus 36” for this dress. Since they’re both a shirred bodice, I was wondering why the calculations are so much different? Is this dress supposed to be looser fitting than the smocked top? I was wondering maybe I should use around 26” width for this dress instead?
@LaurenJohnson
@LaurenJohnson 3 жыл бұрын
@@liaoclara320 Ohh great question! I chose the wider width on this one both because I wanted it to fit a bit looser, and because I wanted the skirt to have a more fullness. I think you could definitely use a smaller width, just keep in mind it will remove some fabric from the skirt!
@liaoclara320
@liaoclara320 3 жыл бұрын

I don’l necessarily recommend it, but I’ve used this machine long enough to know how it handles sewing over pins and it’s never had a problem! 🩷

Did you use a full bust measurement or high bust for the bust measurement???

When you sew your own clothes, you have an opportunity to include what manufacturers have long denied us: pockets! Can’t believe you didn’t include them.

I am So frustrated. I have a singer 2277. I have tried all of your tips tricks videos. I’ve changed stitch length to 3-4, tension from 5 all way up to 9. Stretching flat as I sew , tightened and loosen bobbin casing, light weight fabric and still it is not working fabric shir is loose and or top thread popping ? Do you have any suggestions or does some machines just not shir?

sorry, I might have missed it somewhere, what type of fabric should I use?

I used a quilting cotton for these dresses, but I've also used a lightweight linen as well! I'd recommend lighter fabrics for this design!

@@LaurenJohnson thank you! I made this dress and it turned out amazing! the tutorial was very simple. this is the second dress I've ever made, and the first I made alone. I made it knee length and I love it!

Did you put a liner so it’s not see through?

This fabric is quite opaque, but a liner could be added for sure!

Their customer service sucks actually and the fabric quality is a hit or miss. It’s better to just make your own. Got one with lots of snags on the shirring and the fabric felt cheap. Thanks for sharing

I started to make this dress but after cutting the pieces out, the front & back piece seems too big. If we take your bust measurements 34+ 2 × 2 pieces, that = 72 inches. Does shirring shrink it by 100%? I've read that it should shrink between 10 and 12 inches. How much should the circumference be before starting?

It shrinks depending on your tension, I guess.

Why not just cut the fabric on the fold line and have one seam in the back.

None of these shirring tutorials discuss how many bobbins were used. Was one enough? Then, how did you finish off each row? Did you tie them off or back stitch?
@LaurenJohnson
@LaurenJohnson Жыл бұрын
Great question! I usually have to refill it once, and I back stitch before cutting the thread as well as restarting the stitching. I'd definitely plan on more than one bobbin!
