Linen and linen mix fabrics are such a lovely and versatile fabric to sew with at this time of year. From blouses and tops, to jumpsuits, dresses, trousers and skirts, you can pretty much make anything!
There are various different types of linen fabric though, a bit like cotton, linen can be an umbrella term that can mean the fabric behaves quite differently and is better suited to certain projects.
In this video, I want to bring together and explain all of the different linen type fabrics we have in the shop and show you what you can make with them.

You should also mention, that Ramie fabric will get more coarse and harsh after every single wash, so it is not suitable for sensitive skin, while pure linen fabric will get softer and softer after every single wash. Thats why in clothes industry linen is widely use, not Ramie and thats why pure linen is more expensive than ramie. Ramie is more suitable for decorative items , soft furnishing etc. to avoid people complaining after washing. It look lovely, and comfortable up to 1st wash, after wash still lovely but not anymore comfortable.Pure linen after washing and hang to dry, will get amazing texture - old looking and you can wear it without ironing /depands which look you like, and then will float lovely and make you skin feel great. Thats the main difference between linen and ramie.

Was wondering about the care of linen and linen blends. Do they shrink? Are linens prone to fraying? Are they difficult to handle? Should the edges be prepared before washing? This was really good Lauren and I'm wanting to sew something with linen now!!

Hi Laura, yes the can shrink and as with all dressmaking fabrics, my advice would always be to prewash your fabrics before cutting out and sewing. They can be prone to fraying, it depends on the specific weave and if the weave is loose, they will fray more. Out of the ones listed I'd say the sorona and light weight linen are less likely to fray as much as the others. Generally it is good to finish off the cut edges of the fabric before prewashing to preserve as much of the length of fabric that you have purchased as possible. If you don't then it can be normal to loose a few cm either end due to fraying, which depending on how much fabric you have and what you are making may or may not be a big deal. I hope that helps :)

maybe some, but if you have sensitive skin, never buy pure ramie fabric It will look and feel good up to 1st wash, then harder and more coarse after every single wash, while linen softer and softer. It should be mention in this video, but it is not. Thats why ramie is not as popular as pure linen fabric.

Thank you so much for the video Lauren, it came at just the right time. I have just started doing Friday Sews videos and one of the first things I talked about was how useless I was at ordering linen! Now I now why the Ramie dress I just made feels like cardboard despite soaking in Bicarbonate of Soda 😂. Is it ok if I mention this video on my channel and this video? I have never seen a more comprehensive video, well done and I shall definitely be coming to you for linen from now on.
