In pure theatrical terms, in appreciation of the drama behind, within and beneath Wagner at the highest theatrical levels, this is the rending to cap all rendings ever before, and I would guess , for a very long time to come. Here we have the very greatest Wagnerian tenor of his day, not only singing, but theatrically performing this aria, from the heart and soul of a great artistic performer. There may be prettier versions, there may be technically finer performances, but as Lohengrin's herkunft, performed in character, this is the one and only great example on record.

(..."for a very long time to come ...") - Try "forever", and that's it. There's no one, upcoming, or in the foreseeable future, who could approach the Dane, let alone MATCH his ringing, exultant delivery.

He makes every other singer on KZfaq in this aria sound like an amateur. They are all good but he is so much better in sound, in pronunciation, and in the emotive sense of the piece that no one can compare.

I have heard this sung by Melchoir many times. On reflection, listening to this rendition, it is almost as if he was soaring, or riding on and with the music. I am not an expert, but to me, Melchoir has the richest and fullest voice for Wagner. Thank you for posting.

Lauritz Melchior (March 20, 1890 - March 19, 1973) was a Danish and later American opera singer. He was the pre-eminent Wagnerian tenor of the 1920s, 1930s, and 1940s, and has since come to be considered the quintessence of his voice type. Great Performance!!! Thank you for sharing this video.

Thanks, MrGer and Woog75! ... Melchior could surmount the extraordinary difficulties of a Wagner Heldentenor, and still sound effulgent ... yet, sometimes, refined ... and there was almost never any (throughout his recorded career) any instance of a diminution of his passionate/almost-seamless interpretations of the most-difficult, tenor roles, of all.

Erich Leinsdorf (born Erich Landauer) (February 4, 1912 - September 11, 1993) was a naturalized American Austrian conductor.[1] He performed and recorded with leading orchestras and opera companies throughout the United States and Europe, earning a reputation for exacting standards as well as an acerbic personality.[2] He also published books and essays on musical matters. Great Performance!!! Thank you for sharing this video.

Who is Jonas Kaufmann? He sings back in his throat - bad technique. No wonder he has voice problems from time to time. He cannot touch the greatest German tenors like Josef Schmidt or Fritz Wunderlich. Wagner tenors is a league of its own! Even Fritz Wunderlich was wise enough not to enter this field (only exception - Der fliegende Holländer - Flying Dutchman)! Jonas Kaufmann should never have sung this Aria!
@MusikPiratCH5 жыл бұрын
Jaime Maduro This is NO role for a lyrical tenor like Björling or Wunderlich. No this is Melchior's or Windgassen's field ("Heldentenor" - "hero" tenor)!

@@jaimemaduro5613 Melchior is the greatest Wagnerian heldentenor who ever lived. And he had a beautiful voice. But Bjoerling is the greatest tenor who ever lived. No one can touch Bjoerling in the Italian and French operas. Bjoerling had the most beautiful voice that I have ever heard.
