A lot happening on this day out mowing lawns. I deal with a typical "complaint" from a client when the yard isn't looking its best... "It's being mowed too short" No, mam. It's not being mowed short enough, actually... We need to go to a weekly mowing service. Also, I run out and do yet ANOTHER landscaping estimate (I am doing what seems like dozens of these right now), and I share a tip for using video to document all the things you and the client talk about when on site. This helps me when I am preparing an official estimate to send to the client... I can remember all the little details... the things that were very important to the client this way. Finally, I run into another frustrating situation where yet another lawn care company is paying their employees by 1099 instead of putting their employees on payroll. Look, I'm not going to cause grief over this, but I can tell you this... My accountant said 100% you can not 1099 employees if they don't have their own business license, and are using ANY of your equipment; truck, trailer, mower, stick equipment, shirt... OR if you tell them what time to start each day... Man... I would always feel like I was having to look over my shoulder if I ran my lawn care business this way... When I put my head down to sleep at night I want to know we are by the book. Do it right, guys. Do better.

MY STORY:
In 2016 I had been in law enforcement for 7 years.
I was not in control of my schedule, I was hardly making any money, and I was away from my family working nights and holidays. I was capable of more, and I was silently suffering. I knew I was selling myself and my family short.
I started Florida Turf Pros as a side hustle in 2016 before going full time in 2017.
My lawn business changed my life.
I control my own schedule, control my own income, and I am proud of what I have built; a business that supports me, my family, and some employees.
If you are a lawn care business owner, this channel will be a valuable resource for you.
This really is a great industry to be in, and I hope that by documenting my journey it will help you.
-Jonathan C. Christian

Every December I send out my breakup letters to my problem customers. Dog poop yards, push mower yards, "I can only afford once a month" yards, slow payers, complainers, and yards I just don't like doing. It frees up my time in the spring to do all the mulch and spring cleanups, and by the time I wrap those up, I've usually built my lawn customers back up to the previous year level.

One of the quickest ways to go out of business is to try to undercut people who cheat the system. It is like racing to the bottom. Know your numbers and your worth, then charge accordingly.

Lost a client today bevause we are going through wet season and the grass is growing 6-8 inches a week. So in two weeks we are cutting a foot or more off the lawn. She didnt understand that. She wanted it biweekly and wanted us to kill ourselves and the machines and take longer for a price that doesnt account for that. And this same client complained 4 weeks ago that the grass was two long and it was only 10 days into the 14 day cycle.

@floridaturfpros I have to disagree on the cutting the Zoysia lower. In the summer it needs to be cut higher too so the yellowing and browning. Mowing it weekly is a must to maintain the look. I have Palisades Zoysia and I have to cut it about every 5 days in the summer. So much for Zoysia being less labor intensive. In the winter I cut it way shorter

That's totally illegal to 1099 those guys. The ONLY way to get away with 1099'ing your guys is if, A, they use their own equipment OR B, they RENT ALL of the equipment from the business. We both know that neither of those are happening. That type of thing really ruins it for all of us

I have used them on very steep hills, they are something every LCO needs to know about, and how it's window of service can be extremely helpful to handle specific locations. Cheers, GEG

Having a 6 mo old and another on the way due in november. I felt burbed out almost all the time. You advice has really saved me from devastation. I have the work but it almost seemed like way too much. I started to sleep hydrate and eat better, i feel like i could take care of 20 kids now and an extra 10 yards on top of the 70 i do weekly solo. 7 days a week of course.

Man zoysia likes to be cut high, that is primarily what I cut in my area and I keep them at 3.5 inch. I've never seen brown happen from cutting it high id say that's either thatch or if its been raining alot in your area it could be a fungus because zoysia can get brown patch or it could be chinch bugs so check for that as well. Could make some extra money off a fungicide or bug treatment

@@FloridaTurfPros oh yea for sure buddy those heights work totally fine I'm just saying I've never seen browning from cutting high. I don't know if it makes a difference but I use mulching kits on my mowers and a 3.5 inch cut on zoysia puts down some awesome stripes. Normally what I do is cut it at 2 inch in the beginning of the season then ill let it grow to 3.5 and maintain

I was wondering how much do you charge to cut 1.5 acres and trim and blow in your area of Florida?
@FloridaTurfPros
@FloridaTurfPros 25 күн бұрын
I would not cut a property that big most likely... I could probably cut 6 properties in the time it would take me to cut 1 and a half acres, so I would have to charge close to $300 for a property of that size. Most homeowners would never go for it, which I totally understand from their perspective.

@@FloridaTurfPros I was thinking of charging the customer between $150- $160 per cut . I cut it today but wasn't able to cut all of it because areas in the backyard retain a lot of rain water. I did about 2/3 of it and it took me 1 hour to do it. I only charged her $100 for today's cut. I'm thinking if I cut the whole yard it's gonna take me about 1.5 hours or so. Do you think that's a good price? I'm in Wisconsin.

What type of grass is it? Flat or a lot of terraces? How much weed eating is required? Any obstacles in the yard? I know you already said that you have standing water, but all of these play a factor in pricing, along with your driving time. I would say Johnathon is ball park on at 300.00. It isn't worth the struggle if the pay isn't right.

@@louieevans9125 Hey louie thanks for the response. It's mainly flat but there are water trenches shaped like a V around the perimeter of the property, also there are about 10 trees that I have to trim around also. They are staying at this property until there other property is finished with a complete remodel of the entire house which I used to cut weekly for $90 and the lot size for that house is Just over a half acre at .56. It's also far away from my other customers on my route, but I have extra time on that day to do it

What made you switch from the F250 to the GMC? I've heard nothing but bad things about GMC's V8's. I've had a decent uptick in landscape estimates too, but it's frustrating when you do all that leg work and they don't get back to you, or realize how expensive things are and change their minds... SMH. Hate wasting my time.
