EatTheWeeds Editorial: Lawns Aren’t Green. A decade ago I recorded a 3.5 minute editorial that I wrote for National Public Radio Holland. It was for their Earthbeat series. They set it to music. I’ve been wanting to put it to photos for several years. It’s as relevant today as it was a decade ago. Lawns consume the majority of treated drinking water in the United States, are a major source of water pollution as home owners use more pesticides and fertilizer than farmers, and also cause millions of gallons of gasoline and oil to be spilled.

Excellent commentary!! I allowed my lawn to go uncut for three years and, low and behold, the squadron of fowl did their job and three years was enough to recruit a lot of very healthy saplings into the battle zone. I live outside of municipal jurisdictions, so the only pushback was angry looks from neighbors that spend hundreds, maybe thousands to keep their yards free from food and medicine. I love your work and your sense of humor is well seasoned. 🌿☘🌴

Where are you? Im surprised my family didn't get in trouble in Ohio. Numerous times i didn't mow lawn because on vacation etc and had to hire folks to mow lawn because became too high and i lived in a rich middle class neighborhood with a next door neighbor who hated us for not using pesticides and he owned a landscape co. But i often left some parts high because the rabbits loved it so much. In Chicago I lived in uptown and a neighbor had to get a permit for his property being a nature preserve so he could have his lawn all weeds and like 6 feet high. I think these rules are insane. Yes, short grass helps control insects and snakes etc... But if it's your property....

That's why, when I bought my "patch of dirt" (and tree, and weeds) "in the boonies" I made damn sure that it was an "unincorporated area" and apt to stay that way for my foreseeable lifetime... Where I lived before, I was on Code Enforcement's "10 Most Wanted List..." ;p I "got the last laugh" in the end; but, that's a rather long story...

Love this message! My mom is regularly fighting her town to leave her and her weeded lawn alone! We had a vast green grass lawn when I was a kid, after an injury in 2006 my mom stopped cutting her grass and let nature take over. Now she has medicine and food growing. In warmer months she stomps down a foot path and that's that. We need more people standing up for letting nature run wild as intended

Lawns are a personal preference. I have a happy medium with fruit and nut trees throughout my whopping 1/3 acre(5fruit 2 nut so far) along with my maples that I make syrup from(got 3 gallons syrup last year). A lawn is a nice controlled space for my kids to play on and I don't use chemicals. I can pick and choose which weeds I want to eat and have raised beds and traditional beds over most of my backyard. I also have lots of fruit bushes on the perimeter and am now putting in a Red Bud taking the place of an old rhododendron. Don't forget those LILACS!!!! I am a new homeowner and am still working it out and replacing some more traditional garden plants with more edible decorative ones. Lawns are still good to have at the home and especially at schools, but I agree they shouldn't be acres of lawn for no purpose though. I will agree that mowing them in the middle of a humid heat wave is like torture. I sure wouldn't want to look at my neighbors property if it was a big mess though. There are plenty of options for your front yard that are not a lawn or a wild meadow. I look at the rules/laws for how to maintain a front yard as a challenge to maintain a pretty front yard and produce as much food as possible. If I had more money it would be a lot easier, but I am fortunate to have more time than most.

I love this analogy of war between the two species. I once heard it said that inevitably the grasses will win, but not because of lawns. Rather humans spreading bamboos around the world will mean that they will inherit a large portion of the earth since they are so adaptable. More so than ordinary grasses

Hey Deane. Thanks for the commentary. As a turf care service provider (lawn guy) for about 50 years now, I can say, I have probably mowed more dandelions, buckhorn plantain, chickweed, dock, sedge, etc., than real grass. Turf grass is an ancestor of selected wild grasses on the hills and moors of the English countryside. It was used to help stabilize the cleared land surrounding the old feudal estates and to allow any enemy army to be seen coming. . Any approaching army that threatened to come against that nobleman or feudal lord had to try to cross a lot of open land with no cover. Hence, the concept of the well kept lawn is directly tied to a strategy of feudal warfare. I am not against a grass covered piece of land. In fact, it helps me to keep up the fertility of my gardens by providing me with bio mass so I can make compost.

My lawns are green gold, they provide fertilizer for our garden and lets the weeds blow in when the winds blow, I have beautiful wild edibles, not chemicals, we are at the top of a mountain on an old hay farm that has been here for over 100s of years. We have lots quack grass, my dogs love to eat it and they feel better, they are part cow, lol, we never spray with anything, if anything I may clean my walkway with a little chlorine and water but I usually just blast it with water. The grass is great to chew on and walk with its stalk. We love the trees too, sumac and pine needles for tea. Blessings.

A terrific observation on the futility and damage inflicted by lawn-mania. I live in the country and still, it is astonishing just how much my neighors-distant as they are-devote time, energy, fuel, and money into maintaining large swaths of grass. It is as if when they finally get bored with the mindless watching of TV (yes, even in the country) the first thing they opt to do is to mindless cut a half-inch off the top of their grass. I know towns are even worse. What an incredible waste in so many ways.

Comedic and informative at the same time! Loved it! I tend to agree that lawns aren’t green. I’d take a front yard of yellow dandelions over the useless crab and Bermuda that’s out there right now. I’ve considered sewing loads of pink dandelions or growing oats or flax in place of the front lawn. I don’t really care about the zoning police...a girl’s gotta eat so let her sew wheat! I’m for food, not lawns! And I’m for trees also! I have a beautiful oak in the front and two very productive pecans in the back that yielded over 60 pounds of shelled nuts with no effort on my part aside from picking them up and getting them shelled! That old patch of Bermuda is not so generous or rewarding!

The only grasses that we need are those who we can make food (grains , sugar cane ... etc) out ! Or animals pasture ! or for industrial reasons like bamboo & such

It grows like a vine and take over everything. Little yellow flowers bloom. The plant is fragrant. Would you know what it is? Hope to hear from you soon!
