Recently after a year of my last grandfather having passed. My dad and aunt went through their parents stuff and spread it about. My grandmother loved turquoise. She had lots of rough stones and even different types of loose gems. My grandfather used to work at the copper mine in Morenci and would sometimes give bits of stuff he could sneak out to my grandma. My siblings and I all got our own pieces of turquoise and some loose gems from her collection. I have always been into precious stones but I recently started looking into polishing, cutting, and jewelry making different stones and I stumbled upon this channel! Great stuff! Super helpful and insightful! Especially if someone wanted to get into this type of profession!

This is very cool stuff. It answers certain questions i have been wondering about recently. I just discovered who Justin is and found his videos. I was looking for faceting machine information. If i can save enough money i want to take this course. Gems and precious metals and numismatics are saving my life and i see a good future in them.

Haha that is a valid point and that is actually how the one teacher at the school, Sarath, learned. However going to a school is a good way to get access to the knowledge and to fast track your learning 😜.

@@Lawsongems Hello, I see this is a year old video. However I was hoping that I would be able to get in contact with you. Being in the industry, I'm sure you have a lot of connections and know where to buy specific items. I have been wanting to buy my daughter a lot of faceted gems to fill her treasure chest with. There are so many people selling like items online and these days. You can never trust what you see. Could be glass, plastic, or simply just not get anything. If you would please respond at your earliest convienence, I would love to speak with you. Thank you...

Not that I have gained enough experience yet, but I think I'd be good at Facilitating a Course like this. I come from a long line of Teachers in my family and I have a "Facilitator's Course Certificate" from Ontario Ministry of Housing (Building's Branch) which is internationally recognized. Because I enjoy faceting (having started only in Dec 2019) but also have 50 years rock hounding experience, I think I'd really enjoy Teaching or Facilitating a Faceting Course and might even be competent enough already to do it. Or at least in the fairly near future. This was an interesting look into Justin's courses. Thank You for uploading.

@@NANDATTO1764 If you are asking me, first of all, thanks for the questions. The short answer is a bit of yes and no. I recently opened a business to sell my gemstones and have been largely focused on that but I have also taught a few individuals as well as a Faceting Guild (of which I'm a member) how to Wax Dop stones and how to use Gem Cut Studio software. I also introduced a young kid to faceting last summer and hope to see him and others this summer (at a gem show). I have also started developing a course which I hope to hold at a local community college but that fell behind during the past year due to health issues which I am no longer dealing with. Hopefully, I'll have a few extra faceting machines and will be able to hold a few classes locally as well as in my local College over the winter of 2024/25. Ultimately, the success of that course will rely on enough interest to warrant the cost of the equipment.

Unfortunately the school did not make it through covid I am afraid. I am not sure what the lapidary culture is like in the Philippines, but lapidary clubs are often the best way to start learning gem cutting (if you can find a club 😅)

I like this course. It could be a LOT more popular if they allowed it to be used for the 'Thai Immigrant Visa' all it needs is to keep the student busy for 15 hours per week. This could be done by having an online component that gives students 15 hours per week to complete the unit. (this has worked for TEFL courses I have designed). This is a really interesting course and a LOT of expats would love to do it. I love gems and have a long history with them. I may like to do the course but, their website did not discuss the hour duration of the course, though it did give some indication of the days.

5:58Hmm, the Portuguese cut looks more refined and complicated than the 'mixed' cut and it lost a significant amount of weight, just curious anyone know why they would do that? Does the Mix cut pickup the light better perhaps? Losing nearly 3/10ths of a stone is a pretty big loss so it must've been a strong reason. Anybody know?
@g4l430
@g4l430 2 жыл бұрын
I had the same question while watching. Your question caused me to go back and look again. Right off the bat, the color, clarity and symmetry are much better. By "symmetry" I'm not talking about the cuts, I'm thinking distribution of color. I really would have liked them to mention how the changes effected the price.

@@mannyjr.2724 their classes start in April and go to November. They have many levels of classes - the classes are small and you have a choice of the best machines to use. Fastron, Ultratec and RayTech Shaw. I learned on the Ultatec - but really like the RayTech Shaw. You also can learn Gemcad - the teachers are all very experienced and do faceting for a living. The schools in Thailand only teach the five commercial cuts (how boring). On facet diagrams.org there are close to 5,000 designs. The gemology project has more designs also.

Funnily enough this is actually what most people use as their first ever shape. The fact that is is exactly the same all the way around makes things much easier, you are just repeating a small number of identical facets multiple times. The oval on the other hand was a real challenge as it was free-size meaning we weren't doing a standard calibrated size, just the best we could get from the rough so this meant that we had to use a lot more of our own interpretation of the faceting diagram. That is another great thing about the round brilliant, you never really have to worry about the stone being free-size as the outline is just a circle (where as a oval that is say 10x8mm will need different settings on the machine than a 10x7mm or a 10x9mm). Hope this makes sense 😅
