Back in 2017 we looked at gold sheen sapphire in its beginning stages in the market. We return now a few years on to see what changes have occurred in what types and qualities of this unique material is appearing on the market.

Admitting that he still has a TON left to work with or to access just drove the price down dramatically IMO. Basically, this is copper-coloured, star Sapphire (otherwise referred to as Corundum) that is often found with high-quality, Facet-worthy Sapphire in Australia with the exception that some of this material has some translucency to it, giving it an unusual affect. I'll have to admit, it doesn't do anything for me from a faceting point of view but it is a unique material I'd like to have a Specimen of for my mineral collection.

It is quite an interesting material. Although it does look similar to vaious other chatoyant and asterism displaying sapphires, the main difference comes down to the mineralogy and the fact that sapphire with this particular mineralogy only comes from a single location in the world (so far). A bit like paraiba tourmaline, where you can get none cuprian/copper bearing tourmaline that shows very similar colours to paraiba, but without the presence of copper, they are not considered to be classed paraiba tourmaline. The same principle applies to gold sheen sapphire. You could have a very similar looking stone from Australia, but unless it also has the unique mineralogy of what labs classify as gold sheen sapphire, it will not be classed as such 🙂.
