The way I see the texts is: if they were a married couple, watching television while having dinner, and had that conversation in response to what they just saw on television, that would have been it. The next day they'd have gone to work and did their job as usual. Those texts would have been just a conversation they had over dinner. Thinking they couldn't have done their jobs properly because they were liking Trump less and less the more they saw of him is like thinking that someone who has never driven anything but Fords not being able to work in a Mazda factory without sabotaging the assembly line. Public servants all over the free world do their jobs every day, just plodding along, following the rules. Mostly, their colleagues don't even know who they vote for, because it doesn't matter.
