This video will take you through the steps we went through to build 135 layens frames. These frames will be used in the 10 swarm traps (6 frames per swarm trap) that we are building and 3 horizontal hives (20 frames per hive). There is a great deal of work in making these and we took the opinion that building 135 in a production run would be the most efficient way to build them. All our plans have been provided by Dr. Leo Sharashkin of horizontalhive.com for free and are available to everyone on his site.
We have kept bees before, as beginner beekeepers, but we had poor luck in our first year and lost 3 hives, kept in the Langstroth style of hives. We are hopeful that the swarm traps we have built will catch us some bees, that we can try out our layens frames and layens hive or horizontal hive.
We have not trapped bees before, but we have had bees before. We had lost all 3 of our hives the first winter. We are going to try using a horizontal hive this time around (if we are lucky enough to catch some bees) and there will be videos about us building these hives, complete with insulation. We like the concept of the horizontal hives and Dr. Leo Sharashkin's take on keeping bees.
We built a neat little jig for drilling 1200 holes.
