Charlie just stroke it once and you there mate ….I’m sure you can do without the second stroke. You can lay it and stroke in almost the same move. As you put the brick down steady it with the trowel also in bright sunlight your trowel lining up to whats below will make it quicker to put the brick where it needs to be …. slice it once buddy. You could do that so fast it would look like one move. I believe in you. 🎉✌️

Go over relax don't put too much pressure on yourself and enjoy the experience. Your right competition is a different animal your in their backyard, the weather, type of motor and bricks are different. Your a winner in my eyes either way, everyone will be cheering you on from afar, including my old country Ireland 🇮🇪 'come on blithy, let's be Avin you son', lovely jubilee.

When your bricklaying those sort of bricks with a hollow in it, do you have to fill the whole hollow up with mortar? I’ve got some London bricks and I seem to be using an awful lot of mortar.

I was once a Bricklayer in Ireland, but since been a Mason / Bricklayer in the States for many years. They use the Overhand / Pick en Dip method here a lot. Mortar here is very creamy with Lime. Also the bricks are different. Most Brick types here are also a lot less uniform and have rounder edges than an Irish/English Brick. It's just the style. So if they are not layed 100% square and to the line, you won't notice it here. Technique here is to push the bricks down to the line with your hand / fingers. If you tip them much with trowel water pisses out of the joints so masons only use their fingers. They also use the excess cutoff mortar to butter the following brick a lot. Most bricks here are a bit smaller and narrower too. I went home for a couple of years and tried the US style in Ireland. It does not work. Just like the Irish/English style does not work great in the US due to different Mortar, Bricks, Blocks etc. Goodluck !!

Hey Charlie, it looks good! I know you guys over there are used to the line being close to you but you'll get used to it. As others are saying you'll be battling the heat here in the states. Don't worry about the humidity much it's not very humid in Vegas but the sun and the wind will get to you. Make sure your buddy there is on top of the mud and making sure it's not popping on your mud board. Basic things I'm sure you already know. Good luck!

Never seen it done without buttering the end of the brick before. With enough practice is it possible to use that way of scooping against the muck so that you get a sufficiently full joint? As in as effective as the conventional method?

hello Charlie, i have been to the fastest trowel on te block, in orlando, after watching many of your vidieos my opioin is you are very muh capable. the masons from california and florida are hands down the fastest and always do well at these events, i think in both these states they have alot of earthquakes and hurricanes, they are always laying rebar and steal, so when tey get to the event and the wall section has no steal, they kill it. they do well with speed, but quality is no there, good luck from the states

Charlie, I made it to Vegas last year. I'll be competing this year in a regional soon, hoping to make it to the big show again. I hope you've been practicing, and entered in a regional this year. We may have a similar technique. One thing you got wrong towards the end of your video; you won't get tired during the competition. You will be too amped up. You'll feel super tired about 2 hours after the competition ends. In the end, it's equivalent to car racing, like NASCAR. There are quality standards, too loose for job-site work, but when you're moving at top speed, those standards are hard to hit, especially bed joint thickness. Those bricklayers really are the best of the best. I've seen it up close. The competition gets a lot of crap from people that don't understand it. No one tells race car drivers they're driving too fast and they'd get a ticket if they drove like that on the road. They must be horrible drivers. They can't even go 200 miles without needing and new set of tires, and they don't know how to turn to the right, and they get in accidents all the time. They must be horrible drivers! Not at all, they're the best drivers in the world, pushing themselves to the very limit. Just like the Vegas competition with brick work. No one would want to watch a car driver do the speed limit and follow 3 seconds behind the driver in front of them and use their turn signal before a turn. You won't draw a crowd laying brick perfectly, like on the job, averaging ~100 brick per hour. They set the tolerances and you go as fast as you can. Good luck and I hope to see you there! The practice mortar is roughly 4 parts bar sand to 1 part hydrated lime. Gets about as hard as a piece of chalk for a chalkboard after a couple days. Throw it back in the mixer and reuse it as many times as you like. Phil B. Pennsylvania

Hi Charlie I just read the rules of the Spec Mix Comp if thats the one you are going for. You are not allowed to use any type of profile only old style pegs and corner blocks. Your hoddie is not allowed to pass you any tools or bricks while you are laying, It lasts one hour then 5 min rest followed by 20 min for pointing up with a round tool. Good luck theres only one Charlie!!!!!

In the spec mix competition the wall is 2 bricks wide so every course you have to lay 40 on the front side and 40 on the back side and you have to do it all from one side of the wall so basically half the wall you have to build over hand

Also...to be honest.. the spec mix walls look pretty rough, so you can easily drop the quality a little bit. The big 300ft + industrial chimneys were built overhand, I've never understood why it's such an ailen technique to some. It makes sense, it may be a regional thing. I'm from Stockport MCR. I've worked with bricklayers from Stoke ( 25 miles away) and they said " why are on the wrong side of the wall" . Because it's better for lots of reasons, old skool rules.

Firs .you lay brick upside down,/ gap inside the brick help you set in level/ when you scrape mud / 1 time/ only from bed joint spreed it on head joint right away , have to be solid ,not partial, this is from US Bricky. Here, we lay brick both way , corner pyramid is waste of time , always clamp some "stick" use pipe clamp/. No framed building in US is plumb or level. always needed keep tight/ pick up , bring it in /out. You build the wall ,but again corners of foundation flay up/down and bring it into level have to start from beginning, I use bench mark to hit right top level.
