Hi all,
Now that my driveway's done, I couldn't wait to lay some slabs for our front door.
Instead of just using subbase and sand in my backgarden patio video ( • Laying Garden Paving S... ), I laid them on a bed of mortar.
Please note I've never actually used this method before with slabs, so if you'd do anything differently, then please comment below.
The total cost of this job worked out about £45, but I didn't shop around for the slabs - I saw some in B&Q and bought them straight away.
You can find my DIY Gravel videos here:

Hi Vikkie, brilliant video - showing people that you can do these kind of jobs yourself without having to pay others to do them for you. You have an excellent screen presence, a really bubbly personality and you will go very far! Thanks for the shout out ☺Cheers, Chris 👍

Vicky, Try using a small tub or bucket to gauge the sand and cement, ie 5 buckets of sand to 1 bucket of cement. Accurate gauges make a huge difference to using trowel or shovel measures. You can also mix small quantities of cement by tipping the mix from one bucket to another rather than struggling to turn it in a wheel barrow. I hope this helps.

Hello. I live in Alabama, USA. Not to be at all condescending; but I am so very proud of you for doing a not-very-simple task in such cold weather. It humbled me to see you work; because sometimes I’m hard on myself here for working so strenuously. However, there you were: working with a song on your mouth. Thank you for the inspiration.

Nice tidy job ; 6 to 1 for the mortar sounds right - the famous Tommy Walsh mortar mix is 4 parts sharp sand,2 parts soft sand,1 cement,and he's laid plenty of paving!

I do a lot of this type of work for a living and enjoy watching all of these videos. Thank these guys and ladies for having that courage to post. I learn a lot from them. No one person can say they know everything about building or home improvements. So thanks to all of them!!! And all you nay Sayers out there why don't you get a life or something.

Proper job, then :o) When I was young (like, 500 years ago) the rule of thumb for run-off was 1 inch over 1 yard away from the house and a high point 4 inches below and 4" away from the damp course. We'd lay slabs on a drylene bed (6-8 dry soft sand, 1-2 dry sharp sand + 1 dry cement) and (brush and trowel) point with a dry mix of 4 soft sand, 1 cement. The mix would set by absorption and osmosis over time. We'd typically fill the gap between the slabs and the house with 3/4 to 1 inch pea shingle, just for prettiness. Wet mix would be 4 soft sand + 2 sharp sand to 1 cement over a good sub-base. All that being said, you did a great job of that little ol' patio and need to be well chuffed with the end result :o) Good job, well done.

Tip for pointing flags,if you use another trowel or plastic float on its edge against one edge of the flag then you can use this to slide your mortar down perfectly into the gap it really does keep it tidy and less on the flag 😬👍🏻

Seems to me that you could have used dry sand/cement for pointing and then thoroughly moistened it with light misting to get it to set. That might have helped speed the whole process by sweeping and tamping into the cracks then adding the moisture. No? However your job looks great.

I would like to replace the area with slabs or monoblocking for a patio, I also have French doors that leads out to the area. So I will require steps. A great way to mix a small amount of cement is to use two buckets and pour it backwards and forwards before you had the water, this works great for up to about three quarters of a bucket of cement. But don't put all the sand in and then all the cement as this will make it very hard work, you need to kind of layer it.

Some tips from a pro: 😊 Don’t point on wet slabs, it can stain the slabs. Bcos the gap to point was so narrow, silver sand and cement would of been the best choice. Silver sand is very fine (edit: you did 🤣). You really need to repeatedly tap the pointing down into the joint with the edge of the trowel, not just push it. Sharp sand for the bed as the small stones in it make it the strongest, aside from ballast of course. To clean slabs after pointing... chuck silver sand on top and brush gently over the pointing with a soft brush. Must be soft or ul rip up the pointing. U don’t have to get all the silver sand off. Once it dries the wind will blow it away. Quick and effective. The muck you used for the bed should of been stronger too, 3/1 or 4/1 Some people in the comments giving you bad advice too. Like using dry mortar for pointing. The wind will just blow it away and you’ll have to start again.

Personally, I'd have just used sand to level those slabs in place (already having the compactor was enough, and the hardcore underneath). Unless you're having a load of elephants walking in the house 😁 At least in the future, it'd be easier to lift and do something else with (and saves time messing with mortar).

did you compare the cost that you ended up with renting the hardware and consumables like the mortar with getting it done by a contractor? I'm thinking about doing this myself but my concern are all of the possible hidden costs of tools

That mix is way to weak best go for 4 sharp one cement my advice take it up do it again with correct mix or it won’t last long and start to rock but not bad job well done

Will they be ok if you drive over them to put your car in the backyard?

I have a feeling the mortar may need to be different +Tracy Keenan. I know when we did the back garden ones with sand only, my father in law said those were ok as we were only walking on them. A lot of people also said mortar is needed for a driveway. However, I've read one person last week say sand only for cars which I'm dubious about. Hopefully someone can comment and help here.

I've never seen anyone wearing goggles and respirator to mix cement. Although given that it's cancerous we probably should
@hl8808

Andrew Davies everything today is carcinogenic, if you don’t inhale cement dust you still inhale all the fumes from car exhausts etc.

What do you have UNDER the gravel? -- Is it dirt? Concrete?
@TheCarpentersDaughterUK
@TheCarpentersDaughterUK 6 жыл бұрын
Under the gravel is Subbase followed by weed control sheets

What is subbase? --- loose dirt or soil? Or, something hard like cement?
@marismetan5631
@marismetan5631 6 жыл бұрын
thank you -- you answered my question indirectly -- your subbase is probably soil or dirt -- definitely NOT concrete or cement -- that's the reason for your weed control sheets -- again, thank you -- if I'm mistaken, please correct me.
@TheCarpentersDaughterUK

Sorry, I meant I have weed control sheets, subbase (MOT type something or other) then gravel on top. I've done a 3 part video series on it. I'd dug out the top soil underneath.
