One of our purchases last year was a disk hiller. We used it to lay by our potatoes this week. We added fertilize and the disk hiller puts the dirt next to the plant.

I have had one for about 15 years, I would not grow potatoes without it. Builds your rows, you can get an attachment to make you furrow bed to plant your slips and then pulls up your rows after side dressing. You are right it's worth its weight in gold.

I owned a potato farm in north Florida, we had a trick for making fat rows. weld a bracket to the back of the disc shank about three inches above the axle. Take some 2 1/2 x 1/8 steel strap and cut and weld three pieces to make a half rectangle. Size it so the long side bolts flat ways to the bracket and extends to just past the back of disc and a short piece that goes across about 5 inches and a another piece that extends about 5 or six inches forward along the inside of the disc. You bend and adjust it so it blocks the soil coming off the disc and forces it under the plants. It leaves a flat topped, square shouldered row without knocking the plants over. Your soil looks just like ours, run with some speed and it does a great job.

Wow! That was so quick! I can’t image doing all that by hand! My garden is teeny compared to that and I am sweating after 10 minutes of hand hilling! 😂

I'm getting too old to hand hill, so I broke down and got a small electric tiller. It has an attachment that throws all the dirt to one side. Works great. But I've never heard of hilling Irish Potatoes, those are early potatoes and don't really benefit with hilling. Now my Russets, yes! The late potatoes always give more crop when you hill them. But shoot, I've thrown my Reds in top of the ground and covered them with a couple foot of straw and got just as many potatoes as if I did it the conventional way.
@MountainMama06
@MountainMama06 5 жыл бұрын
That’s interesting! We have a small tiller also but I didn’t know there attachments for them! 🤔 I’ll have to be on the look out as we hope to expand our garden this year! And straw hilling is something we definitely make use of too.

Crimson clover makes for happy bees. Before I moved from North central VA in 2006, bees were almost a thing of the past. But, by that time, the Apple trees and grape harbors were gone..,so that may have been the reason why.

I planted my red potatoes about the same time you put your potatoes in. The gopher (a big one) has moved to the row, so I figure they're beginning to produce. Also, the leaves are getting spots on them and I think they're dying back or diseased? So, I dug 3 or 4 to see what was going on. They had one about the size of an egg per plant, plus a few the size of golf balls, and lots of teeny ones. Do I need to do something to help them with the disease so they can be in the ground longer? My hubby is working on the gopher problem, and hopefully the critter will leave enough for us too. I had such high hopes for a good crop this year.
