My biggest gripe about these video's of lads laying is it's always at a comfortable height. I'd have a lot more time for them if it was the first course or the 20th. Anyone can smash them down hip height

I laid brick for 30 years. This young man is very good at what he does. His style is conventionally called laying backwards. Whatever works for him is fine with me. I worked with a really good mason in the early 90s in Memphis, Tn. One old white guy who was not a very good mason complained that this guy was holding his trowel wrong. I told him, "John, he's outlaying you three to one. I think he knows how to hold his trowel." I really think the old white guy did not like being shown up by a black man. The black mason was 6'10" tall. He could lay 11 courses of 8" block without a scaffold. I could barely get 9 courses laid but I could spread for him up to the 11 which hits the top of a 6"8" door buck.

Nice work. Good flat wall. Those bricks are better than the larger bricks commonly used in Western Australia. Bricklayers lay mortar different to stone masons. I lay bricks and make a flat bed not running a groove in the centre. I'm wondering if you strikes the mortar on the other side of the brick. I wear a glove when laying bricks. Look after your back mate. I know a bricklayer when he does the low work he is on his knees. That saves his back. Do it while you are young so when you get older all of a sudden you do your back in. I know one bricklayer he worked so hard he had his back fused. Some of his vertebra. He is younger than me and still doing project housing. They don't pay the right money so you need to work hard. In saying that, he did very nice work.

Hi Stu have you ever heard of a double cavity walls it will make the brick wall deeper of about 0.5m it will be more expensive but the double insulation will make it pay off by lower heating bills just a thought.

I do have an issue with no sheathing and vapor barrier. But the brick layer looks like he knows what he's doing. As for wall ties he could have used them since we didn't see the whole wall being laid.
