Well, I'm making changes to our WestPac industry in the new Orange California section of the layout. Let talk about it and run a test train to see how the changes work.

Pretty good puzzle you are building there. An idea for your negative space. Take your portable conveyor belts and kit bash wheels on them making them portable. Various rail industries use these portable conveyor belts for unloading bulk products in hopper or box cars. They could be set off to one side, for use to unload trucks or trains when times are busy. Down in Perris I have seen them used for both livestock feed and bulk powders.

You can always do a double run around with cars in front and behind. Or when you go to switch the first part against the back, pull into the runaround track first, cut off the whole train, go light power into the industry, get your pulls, leave them on the main, go to the train, get your spots and then shove them in. Probably how I'd tackle that in the real world.

That's gonna be nice looking with the conveyor belt and overhead pipes going across from the main building to the silos. I drove trucks in all 48 states for 31 years and I have seen industries with facilities on both sides of tracks, highways, and rivers. They build where they can. I can't wait to see what comes next.

I understand where your coming from, I always tend to over think my industries. Sounds like you have a good plan. Nice update and ops session, thanks for sharing. Dave

Rick: I like your idea of making that entire area WestPac. Were it me (and it's not), I'd pave the area in a U-shape around the towers so that truck traffic could come in off the street, loop around (over the Westpac spur) and exit onto the same street, but on the other side of the spur and towers. Trucks have to have maneuvering room, too as your tank car terminal shows. But, whatever you do is fine with me. Just keep an eye on that Carl guy. He's trouble.

I love the "atmosphere" of your layout. It does sell the illusion of semi dessert. I'm planning to model something similar, just 1950s. Also subbed... I honestly thought I already had a few months ago... Looking forward to updates!

Westpac 1 and Westpac 2, all one industry. Just a name suggestion , looks great, some made a suggestion of a horseshoe drive way around the silo that would probably look good and provide the authenticity your looking for.

You could extend the background building from street to street. This would give you 3-4 car spots (if you extended the track by the background building up to the road). I’d also think about adding a Kadee surface mount magnet as the grade crossing right before the background building. Hopefully it would make it easier to unhook the cars without the long reach.

From your description of the process, it seems the silos are for loading outbound trucks. The small volume of the silos indicates this too, for rail loading the silos would be much larger. The silos might move towards the aisle to be above a concrete driveway. Inbound rail hoppers would dump to an inground pit with a roof cover. Conveyors for both will cross the tracks to the processing plant.

Hey Rick great update!! I really look forward to seeing how you work out that new expanded industry West Pack i believe? That will some interesting and possibly complicated switching. That will be fun!! Thanks for sharing and hope all is well. I know you guys are dealing with a lot of heat right now. Here over in New England were in the midst of a continuous heatwave seems like. The triple H. Hazy, Hot, and humid 🤷‍♂️😅 Have a good day and stay safe. Happy modeling!! - Jason

I am sure what Dry Board but suggest its Wall board. Irving produces it at a plant in Saint John. Lime stone was originally brought in by rail but now truck. material for the wall board is brought in by rail in high cube boxcars. finished products shipped on Center Beam Flatcars.

Let me preface this with that I'm just trying to help with info and _it's your layout_ The tower you have is for loading frac sand into shorty covered hoppers. Just an FYI Now as far as Westpac goes (and I Iooked into it) the plant would receive Gypsum (short 2 bay hoppers,) Lime (short 2 bay hoppers), and Calcium Carbide (larger 3 bay cars). Also sometimes Pearlite is added as a filler. (really large 3 and 4 bay hoppers) The lime would be infrequent. Nothing would be loaded into the hoppers so the loading silos would not go over the tracks. They could be for loading bulk truck trailers. This is based on that this facility would ship most of its output locally in regular dry vans to places like Home Depot, Ace, and Lowes distribution centers. The bulk would go to repackagers that would put their own brand on the products. Some could also be sent in containers or boxcars (if desired) All of these dry minerals cannot get wet, so all storage and probably transfers need to be covered. I hope this helps some. I researched alot of these minerals for my model Railroad, as I process them and ship them out to places like Westpac. Also did you look into FXI near there? It looks like they get tank cars of polyurethane foam and latex for foam mattresses. Some simple storage tanks and racks, and a long low building. Again I just like to talk about this stuff and it's just a share. And I hope it helps. PS, you shoulda gone up the runaround, leave the cars going in cut off before the 1st switch, then run the power out the other end and back down. Then grab the cars going in, pull them past the whse. Pull the cars from the warehouse and set them on the main. And finally spot the cars at the whse, then move to rest of work 😁

I was thinking the same thing concerning the small 2-bay hoppers. That way that one in the yard could be used. I know, it’s a cement car. There’s nothing that says a cement car couldn’t be used for gypsum or lime, since both can be ingredients in cement. Also, I’ve seen perlite shipped in 3-bay cars. The 4-bays are for really light commodities, mainly DDG’s, or, if equipped with pneumatic outlets, plastic pellets, resin pellets, Hi-Sil silica sand, etc. Hi-Sil is more finely ground than the sand that comes in 2-bays. Rick, you could switch the hopper side first, leaving your train on the other side of that crossing. Do your work on that side first, then come back and get your train and finish it on the warehouse side. You could run around your pickups on the hopper side of the plant, leave them in the access track as you come back to do the warehouse work. Before you head back to the yard, the cars you picked up on the hopper side are already lined up to be picked up on the way home, and are out of your way as you finish work on the warehouse side. Just a suggestion, of course! Enjoyed your video! Happy modeling!

@@TPW900GP35 yes those shorty 2 bays have quite a few other uses. Frac sand and cement just being the most common. I have an ag. Gypsum location that liked the smaller ones. Also the Perlite plant at Superior AZ liked the shorty cars for some reason. The most popular car for perlite these days is 2nd hand grain cars like 4750s. A good opportunity to create rust bucket cars. cheers!

PS Pearlite is what makes cinder blocks light and handleable. (has other uses as filler and gardens.)

@@jcure yeah, when I worked for the TP&W back in the ‘70’s and ‘80’s, we received cars of perlite from the ATSF on a regular basis, mainly in DRGW 3-bay 4750 hoppers. It was destined to points east on CR, glass mfg. plants, I think.

What is the big building behind the silos. You could move it closer and run track into and along side that building. This way you could still have the back drop building for something else. I am thinking you could also add a right hand turnout before the silos for a storage track
@BartVanAllen
@BartVanAllen Ай бұрын
you may need to move your off-spot area - maybe just off the near corner (as seen in this video) of the runaround track - appears to be plenty of room there - and that would allow another car length for maneuvering consists

Hey engineer Rick. Fellow retired A.N.G. acft mechanic Dale here in Idaho. What type of couplers do you have on the troublesome hopper cars? I don't think you should get rid of the cars when the couplers seem to be the problem. Why not just change the couplers to Kadees? If you like, just send the cars to me, I'll swap couplers out, tune them up for you and send them back home.
