Model railway layout wiring can be a confusing task, but an essential one that we all need to undertake whether we model DC, DCC and all gauges. With various cable sizes available, along with different descriptions and power ratings, choice can be difficult. Here's some guidance from Chadwick Model Railway.

You are the first person I have seen in our Train world giving HSE stuff. I know in my industry of Oil and Gas its the only thing in the world but if you save one person then you have done your job. So well done mate. What it does mean we can can get on with the other stuff whilst safe….. All the best❤

Believe it or not, I once had to contact a quite well-known and respected KZfaq model railway personage (NOT our Charlie), as he had made a video suggesting we use Wire Wool to create realistic looking trees and foliage. As I'm sure you're aware, Wire Wool that's been inappropriately used, is responsible for more workshop fires than just about anything else. Wire Wool can spontaneously combust!!! So, Charlie's and your comments are absolutely important. Thank you both. Merry [and safe] Christmas, Rick

Charlie! Brilliant! I’ve only got 1 and a half minutes into this video and, as @MrAsBBB has mentioned, a whole hearted thank you for mentioning health and safety! I too have a fire extinguisher by the door of my cabin/office/(planned) train-room which halos has a full circuit breaker and RCD… also, being ex-RN and having previously worked in oils & gas exploration (a looong time ago now), one appreciates and realises how important this is. Also, I have been finding your videos invaluable and enjoyable in helping me build a great hobby as I approach retirement. I’ve been a bit of a techy for the last 25+ years, after 17 years at sea. So gone straight into DCC, but still at the planning and information gathering stage, so your experience and method of explaining works for me. Keep going matey!

I so wish You had made this video a few years ago, when I was resurrecting my 50 year old layout. I had no idea about bus wires or even what they meant, although since watching various KZfaq videos I had heard of them. Apart from anything else, I now understand why some of my older locomotives slow down when 12 feet away from the power input! (I thought it was only because of old track use). Now I understand what a bus wire is, and I have to replace a couple of curves at the far end of the layout, I can incorporate a bus wire to that piece of track ahead of creating a proper bus wire around the layout later. This has been one of the best videos I have seen for a long time, and all of yours are good Charlie. Can’t thank you enough. Roy.

Hi Charlie, I wish I had seen this video 2 years ago when I was wiring my layout. I have been told that I went over the top with my track bus cabling, I used 6mm cable with a dropper from every piece of track, but with a track run of about 200ft I don't get any voltage drop or signal loss so I think my choice has proved it's point, the cable I had spare in my garage from my contracting days. The DCC Concepts wire strippers are similar to the type I have been using for about 20 years now, they will strip any wire size from telephone to 6mm without having to waste time adjusting the cutting throat like with some expensive units. The connectors are a great unit but I found out about them when I was about 3/4 of the way round my garden section soldering the droppers to the bus wires so I just carried on. Another excellent video which also covered some of the safety requirements when we are working on our layouts.

I have just realised the wire strippers I bought several years ago have that same insulation “stretching” capability, amazing, oh well it will make future wiring much easier. I may even go back and tidy up some of my existing wiring. 😊 Cheers and have a Safe and Merry Christmas, Peter.

Thanks again Charlie, you always present a concise and knowledgeable session. I'm at this stage of my layout (lower level and Helix) right now and have followed all your suggestions. I'm DC (for now) and am dropping feeders every 2.5 feet on the main and every quarter turn on my helix ( 48" diameter ). I'm also wiring in "track sensors" at that same interval for loco "location" indication. Stay well . . .

Brilliant tips Charlie, the bootlace ferrule idea, is a game changer. After cruising Amazon's pages, I splashed out on a wire crimping set plus a pack of plain bootlace ferrules without the coloured cuffs. The plain ones are perfect to tidy up the strands while wiring up a 240 volt plug . The better wire strippers next!!

Those stripping tools from DCC Concepts really are excellent, I got one just before I started to build Pevenbourne and have used them to install the Track and Accessory buses so far on Phase 1 of the build along with the little connector boards you demonstrated. And I shall continue to use them throughout the build. I also install my droppers in exactly the same way as you do having learnt the single hole through the board method from you a couple of years ago. Incidentally, thought I’d share a little tip that I use when I solder the bus wire to the tag:- After you’ve stripped the bus wire, passed it through the tag and soldered it, while the joint is still hot, it’s possible to gently push the insulation from both sides of the tag so that it closes right up to the metal of the tag so you don’t have a gap in the insulation. It works for me and I do it on all the tags. Take care Charlie.

Hello, Chadwick, from across the pond. My name is Mike I just stumbled across your videos. Very informative. I am very new to model railroading. Two months to be exact. I am retired now. I was a carman for a major freight railroad for 30 years. I retired in 2021. It was just a job. I was never interested in the railroad. But two months ago I came across my old Tyco train set I got back in 1960's when I was a child and thought something needs to be done with this before it is just thrown out after I am gone. I got it out and repaired the two locomotives that come with it. Since I enjoy fixing things, I have purchased over 60 locomotives needing repair in the past two months off of Ebay. Mostly vintage Tyco/Mantua F9/F7 diesels. So, I have the bug. A familiar story I'm sure. Now I am planning a HO scale layout and your videos, and those of others, have been very helpful. Thanks

Hi Charlie! Fantastic little tutorial mate 😉 I have made good use of those block connectors on my portable garden test track set up, and they work superbly! I also made use of HiFi male/female sockets which plug in nicely on the simple two-track sections on my ‘back straight’ furthest from the power source! As you suggest, running a bus and dropper wire system really helps maintain even running with DC and can’t recommend it enough 🤓 I also made use of a pair of SCART leads to connect my power box to the main board, which enables me to run DC in sections. Because of the simplicity of the connector systems, it means I am able to fix the 6 separate components of my set-up, including the legs and tables they sit on, and then make all the electrical connections secure within about half an hour 😎 By the way, as someone working in a safety critical environment, I applaud your simple H&S advice. I have a mini extinguisher from a kitchen supplies ship inside the door of my shed ‘just in case’, not least because, as I am sure you well know, even the fumes from a small electrical fire can be life changing 😟 Oh, and thanks for drawing attention to that website. That is what you call decent customer service, which seems to be an evermore disappointingly rare characteristic these days 🙄 Cheers mate, look forward to the next one, have a great weekend 👍🍀🍻

Hi Charlie, long time watcher, first time commenter here! Great video as always! You're content has really helped me as I've made my way back into the hobby after a 35 year break! Soldering under the layout frightens the life out of me, so I started using those Suitcase connectors, but have since moved onto using things called Lever Nut connectors! You can get them from Amazon / Screwfix and they handle differing wire sizes and come in sizes with different numbers of ports, so you can take multiple droppers from the same connector! Keep up the good work! All the best, Ian.

Great timing Charlie :) just dumped my Parsons Heath layout, room needed decorating anyway but glad there's an alternative to connecting droppers to the bus wire. I hated those clips and I found them problematic as with those soldered rail connectors so will give those clips from DCC concept a try. Memories of the Great Eastern in N gauge is being started at Christmas on a 12 x 8 board set up so this video has been very handy... Thanks Charlie

Charlie, a great video! Those terminal strips you demonstrated used to be very common in old electronic items like radios and TVs before PCBs were invented. They were as common as dirt. They are still available at electronics distributors like Digi-Key as "3 position terminal lug strips." They seem to run about $0.80 US there. This might be a good backup source if DCC Concepts sells out their stock. Cheers from Wisconsin!

Charlie, An absolute blinder!! I'm just about to spend a weekend on my back, hooking up my droppers to bus wires, Some great tips, I too have an aversion to those auto crimps. The terminal strips you illustrated for joining the droppers to the bus wires are an absolute gem. I like to solder the droppers to the ends of my tracks, thus I get two droppers onto one bus wire join -saves a bit of time. Thank you for the video, so much useful information. A final thought, you can't be too OCD on wiring, if it's a rats nest and you've got a problem, you haven't got a hope in hell.
