We're trying something we've never tried in the past -- planting corn on double rows! We've done the math and we think we can grow significantly more sweet corn in this plot if we plant the seeds on double rows.

I've never grown any corn before. But my granny use to grow it all the time. Her favorite was the peaches and cream. The main thing that she did that you don't hear too many folks talking about now a days is she got her water on the stove started before she went out to harvest the corn. Once the water started to boil, she'd head out her back door and pick the amount of corn she wanted to harvest and can up, chuck it and throw it right in the pot. She didn't waste any time because she said the corn tasted better doing it this way and it never lost it's sweetness. She had plenty of time tested ideas and tricks up her sleeve that most these days never seem to remember. I often think of things she taught us and think of things I wish I could ask her now.

I read years ago that the corn of the day,early 80s,lost 17% of its sugar in the 1st 5hoirs after picking so Grannie was right.

I pick it, shuck it, and it goes straight into vacuum pack bags and into the freezer. Never had problems and less work and taste like its been picked right off the stalk a year later. Lot less trouble.

Same here but with grandpa It was grandma who could really grow tho...her health took a nose dive and he took over. I have vague memories tho.. I was just looking at the louve and thinking there isnt anyone alove who can carve a piece of marble even remotely like what.was done before...and there are about three to five people who can paint like they did a long time ago. They use to train under the masters and secrets were passed along..well that was lost about ww1...and the nail put in the coffin with ww2...NOw u get crap like picasso and WORSE..I NEVER WAS SO DISAPPOINTED THAN WHEN I SAW A COLLECTION OF THE GUY WHO PAINTED THE MAGAZINE COVERS...SHIT I FORGOT HIS NAME..GETTING ANCIENT IS ROUGH ON THE MEMORY

We grew double rows growing up... no drip tape, no other irrigation, just a 5gl bucket and well... we had more corn than we could ever eat... gave tons away and canned a lot. I'm growing Peaches and Cream in raised beds...this is our 2nd year for it. Worked great last year, sooo doing it again.

Hey Travis, you need to check out either Hollis and Nancy or Deep South Homestead. They use a stand-up seed planter made of PVC pipes. We copied Danny's design last year. It's a simple design but a real back saver!!

I grow corn (Golden bantam) in a 4' x 16' raised bed. Three rows about 8" apart. Got two beds, and plant green beans in one bed, and plant corn in the other. Every year I switch them with the other bed, so one bed beans, the next year corn. Been doing it for five years now. I put wood ash, crushed egg shells, some compost in them every year. My beans grow like wild fire, and we usually harvest over 120 pints of cut beans every year. The corn has been growing 10' - 12' high, and me and the wife get about 25 meals from the corn, with the corn being a side dish. After i harvest the corn I remove the stalks with the roots. I run over it with the lawn mower with the bag on it, and then I take the shredded corn stalks, and till them back into the bed. I do the same with the beans. I also mulch them with cut grass from the yard. This has been working great for 5 years now, and the corn, and beans taste great.

I planted sweet corn for the first time last year after I bought your drip irrigation kit. It turned out FANTASTIC! I was shocked how well it turned out and how much water I saved vs overhead or garden hose spraying. I side dressed it about knee high and fed it plenty of fertilizer and sprayed for ear worms. I’ve learned so much from watching you and your dad’s videos. Thanks so very much for sharing your knowledge. 😊

I grew silver queen in one of my 12" 4x4 raised beds last year (and it was my first spring/summer). It was a test run to see if I could do it. That heat wave had me watering twice a day at times. But, we started eating home grown corn by mid June! This spring I'm going to grow 2 beds of your Serendipity.. May plant your ambrosia after the first harvest...or just sow some red rippers in those beds n call it a day! It takes dedication on my part but, my family loves fresh corn now. Ga, zone 8a.

hi travis nice video . this year we planted peaches and cream sweet corn from corn seed we had left over from last year i wasnt sure if it would germinate at all but like in your video i and my wife planted double row on second season drip tape from hoss tools, the best thing we did for our watering needs worked this year very well. the one thing i didnt catch on the video was the spacing we had 10 ft wide by 40 ft to use we planted 30 inches wide with 8 inch in row spacing still worked out great nearly 100 % germination to my surprise a very good harvest this year i will be using the double row method again . thank from panhandle of nebraska Enjoy your family videos keep them coming . from michael and karen thanx

Hi…you mentioned about growing corn in raised garden beds…I grow my sweet corn in my garden beds with much success….i live in Southern California in the high desert where it gets hot so I inter plant the corn with my peppers and tomatoes to help shade these plants from the scorching sun…this past season I also experimented with growing corn in containers along with a tomato plant and using the corn as a natural tomato cage…it worked great…I made some videos showing this if you are interested in taking a look 🥰

I plant corn and beans in old style check rows. Six seeds per hole thinned to three stalks, holes 30" on center. It makes it really easy to keep the weeds out. In my experience, sweetcorn will not take nearly any frost, unlike field corn.

Lol I'm a old dog. I picked up some silver queen this year , but I'm waiting a bit maybe a month and half and planting some baby corn in a separate area. What I'm hoping, is between growth rates and tassels being separated I can grow various crops of corn. However, we are still a bit away from corn planting so if I see a different kind of corn I may swing that way too . I'm growing what my daddy grew but if someone can convince me to try something else I will.

It never occurred to me that some people don't plant corn in double rows. It's all we've ever done. When you grow up for real dirt floor poor in Arkansas you have to maximize everything.

Hard to believe it is time to plant corn!! FYI I planted corn in (8) 25 gallon grow bags a couple of years ago and it turned out great. The secret is to put the grow bags all together in mass and not in a straight line, so that pollination happens. Would love to see you try corn in your raised beds.

Hello from Bergheim, TX! I planted nine 28’ rows of Superb corn. I got the seed from Johnny’s. After it gets up and going I’m planting a field corn variety called Montana Morado. Very excited! Im growing the Latte variety this year. I grow in the standard 30" wide in ground beds with 18" pathways between. I plan on planting two rows per bed spaced 10" between rows with 6" in row spacing. Fingers crossed!

Best of luck on the double rows. I tried closer spacing on corn, but ended up with a lot of partially pollinated cobs, because the healthy leaves were covering the silks. My Kandy Korn is just popping up.

Yeah that happened to me when I tried a 2' single row spacing one time. I'm hoping that the 40" row spacing helps with that. This variety also doesn't very tall, which should help some.

Glad to see your steady channel growth! It's well deserved! I've grown corn on double rows before and it worked fine. I had a furrow between rows that I flooded and that's how I watered it. It did make spraying and weeding more challenging, but it's workable. Send me a couple of bushels when it's ready, I've sworn off growing it this year due to intense racoon pressure!

@ that British homestead Throw some red pepper flakes (just a little) in with your green beans when you can them this year. And put some dried chili or poblano pepper in a few of your corn that you can. When you use them green beans with that red pepper flakes in your vegetables soup next winter and the corn in your taco's and nacho salad you're lips will smack your brains out..mmm.. so good 😊🪴

I usually plant nirvana sweet corn and we love it. But I’m going with bodacious sweet corn, I just wanted to try something different. Looking into April, I might plant this weekend and I’m in 7b(Maryland). The next couple of nights the lows are in 30s but that’s it. The low temps are consistently in 40s and 50s all the way to the end of April and my last frost date is the 15th. Corn is a grass and I’ve already started to cut some of it. So I’ll probably be the first person in Maryland planting corn this weekend 😅

I learned something today. I was putting those end clamps on wrong. I was folding the tape a couple of times then trying to force the folded part into the clamp. It worked but took considerably more effort that what you did. Thanks. I grew Eden and several SE strains last year and all were good. Ambrosia was a standout too..

Corn plot looks great! 💚 I personally don’t even bother trying to grow corn. We have a u-pick farm about an hour away. I like to go there and get a few hundred ears of peaches & cream as well as silver queen and put it up. I just haven’t been successful with corn enough to justify the work 🙈

I grew 3 rows of corn in a 4ft wide x 32ft long raised bed last year, didn't turn out well that was too close to each other. I'm going to try 2 rows this year and see how much it improves

God help you if it all grows and produces well. That's a lot of corn for a home garden. So here's my pro tip... put that extra seen in a prop-tech tray... then your skips will be the same age as rest... I've done it, had good success with it.

Travis you can grow a lot of sweet corn in a raised bed. Mel Bartholomew wrote a book on square foot gardening. He made a 4 foot square bed and divided into 1 foot squares, in each square he planted 4 equally spaced seeds. That gives you 64 seeds in a 4 square foot space and if you find a variety of corn that puts on two ears per stalk that’s 128 ears of corn. 🇱🇷😎

I have actually successfully grown sweet and pop corn in containers! I know it will work in beds🤗 I don't remember if it's a 25 or 30 gallon container, but I grew 4 plants in each container!

I'm going to have to try the drip tape, previously only used soaker hose and tubing with individual emitters which can be laborious for a garden (as apposed to fruit trees and bushes say). Obvious and maybe trivial but seems a short pipe thru tape spool would make it a tad easier to unwind. For me battery powered timer/valves is almost essential for most watering circuits, I'm not always around or otherwise may neglect something at the worst time, say 110 F mid summer in our dry Commifornia inland.

Thought about corn on double rows last year, but didn't try it. Watched some commercial fields that I travel past often, some of which were double row and some of which were single. All were on commercial "drip" irrigation. Not sure what varieties, but probably all GMO. All the fields looked like similar ear size, and all had two ears per stalk. The only visible difference I could see was number of stalks per acre, like what you said about your number of rows in the plot. So, it looked like a pretty good yield per area increase on the double row fields. This year, I'm going to try doubles.

My first year of gardening I did 9 double row. Then found out that’s not how corn was to grown. So I haven’t since then. I didn’t use drip tape I had flood furrows for the water. I had so much corn I was giving it away and we eat on it for over a year. Good luck. I think you should be good. Just lots of water.

i have seen where when planting by hand like you did with the corn, if you use a piece of pvc pipe and drop the corn down the pipe you wont have to bend over to make sure your seed is placed into the furrow .. just a suggestion .. if you want i will give you the name of the other you tube channel i saw this used on .. i didnt want to be rude and put another you tubers channel on yours

With the Drip line I think the corn will turn out well! It's too early here to plant, were still hitting the low 20s some nights. But, I've chosen "Bodacious Sweet Corn". Its something I can pick up local . Shipping & seed prices are getting worse every day...I have been a fan of "Incredible Sweet Corn for many years, But i think its time to change... I had a rough gardening season last year due to the drought, so I'm also planning to use drip lines for sweet corn too. Have a Good rest of the week!

Looking like a great idea Travis. My entire garden is as big as your one plot I think. Nonetheless I have six rows of sweet corn 20 feet long about 15 inches between rows. It grew last year in my test garden until the bear and raccoons got it the night before I harvested it. But I learned it needed more water than I was giving so this year it’s on a auto watering set up and I amended with pre plant and now I’m going to side dress once they are a little taller. Currently the corn in about 3” tall and dark green. When would you suggest side dressing and hilling for the first go around. I’m going to use alfalfa pellets this year to see how they work out. Great videos as always not surprising your gaining subs at such a rate. Thanks for all you teach us.

Travis, excellent video and thanks for listing the drip info. So your using 5/8" main line with 16 mil drip tape, I will try drip irrigation for corn this season. All the best from snow country S. N.H. Only see 1/4, 1/2, 3/4 main line at Drip Depot ?

1/2" is the same as 5/8". Some companies use the inside diameter, others use the outside diameter. I should have clarified that in the video. Or maybe I'll just start calling it 1/2".

Travis. I’m thinking of maybe doing this, this year. I have a question or two for you. Approximately how wide is the corn row spacing. 12-16”? Also. Is the single row of drip tape enough water to reach the planted rows ? Was just wondering this in case we don’t get much rain. Seems like quite a reach for the tape. Like the channel. Appreciate ya.

Travis, seeing you bending over and hand planting each corn seed make me think you need a "Danny Seeder" like Danny at "Deep South Homestead" made. Just some old PVC parts and a coffee container but no more bending (great for us old folks with arthritis and bad backs!!!!). kzfaq.info/get/bejne/q811Zs182-DRfoE.html I'm also going to try double row for my corn this year, but in raised beds and with a lot closer row spacing. It's going well so far. Corn is about 12" tall now and will need to be hilled soon.

I have a limited area (12x14'ish) area and want to plant some watermelon this year, too. I'm going to plant my corn, Incredible, in 3 square blocks with a few watermelon planted around them. Will probably have to get out the broom and "help" with corn pollination. 😛 Sometimes these experiments work. Nothing ventured, nothing gained! Will be looking forward to seeing how your double row experiment works out.

It won't hurt to get out your broom, but planting corn in hills is a traditional method that might be worth researching for your application, as it sounds like you're getting quite close to that method already.

@@zinnia3190 I have considered something similar to what you're doing, but at least for this year I decided not to. I'm planning on growing mushrooms (wine caps) in the mulch beneath the corn, and I think having it in rows without vines covering the ground will provide better shade for the mushrooms and make them easy to spot for harvesting.

Travis, we did one double row with drip tape, how often are you having to turn on the water? This is our first year with drip tape. Thank you for all your advice

Never tried an all white variety, but the “Nirvana Series” is supposed to be some of the best eating quality out there. Planted “Pursuit” last weekend, trying something new.

Interesting method and depending on how yours turns out, I may have to try it next year. One question... approximately how far apart are those two planting furrows created by your wheel hoe? My guess is 10" - 12". You may have said, but if you did, I missed it. Hope you have great success with this.

Any tip to keep raccoon and opossum out of corn patch would be greatly appreciated. I’d hate to spend $100-250 on electric fence, but will do if you don’t have better option

I put red top fencing around my garden areas which is a 1/2 acre, and then on the inside of my fence I added chicken wire from ground up, and the laid some ground clothe. also on the outside of the garden all the way around make a batch of home made weed killer of 1 gallon vinegar, 2 cups salt and about a 1/4 cup dish liquid and not only will this kill any green growing anything but the vinegar smell will deter animals from the fence line. Also another help if you would like to help with pests on your plants is to mix a 5 gallon bucket of water and 1 large bottle of cheap hot sauce and a good squeeze of dish liquid, mix well and spray on and under plants, helps to fight off pests because they don't like the hot sauce and the dish soap helps to make it stick on the and under the plants without hurting the plants.

I use a couple old vacuum cleaners and a bright light at night on the planting that is getting close to being ready. Never had anything take another bite since.

Did you stagger plant the double rows? Growing Yellowstone again this year using my left over seed from last year. Really enjoyed Yellowstone last year. I grow in a pair of raised beds that are 3x20 ft. 2 rows in each bed. 4 Successions planted 15 days part. Hand pollinate all the corn since I don't have large blocks. I have done 3 rows per bed but with the beds running E-W, some plants on the north side didn't get quite enough sunlight

Only issue with my soil is that outside of wine grapes and fruit trees gophers are a massive issue so much so i have to plant vegetables in raised beds or the gophers will get them i have tried it all from poison, to gassers, to traps, etc they just keep getting into everything so I havent really gotten to do a lot of gardening projects ive wanted to try out.

I haven't. Might want to try flushing your system occasionally if it keeps happening.

We just covered them with a rake. Then we let the drip tape run overnight to soak the seed bed.

Travis I love your show and family and I apologize but I’m asking a question again that you’ve answered before. I thought I would remember the answer and remember which video you answered it in and it really has nothing to do with this topic However, I grow two peach trees, some of the best peaches you’ll ever taste, the only problem is I get to taste about 1% and the Japanese beetles get the rest. Can you tell me what to use and when to use it to combat Japanese beetles? I have tried traps and they don’t work and sometimes I wonder if they make it worse.

I'm no help when it comes to Japanese beetles. We don't really have them down here, so I've never fought them. Also have never grown peaches. Sorry.

yes you can as long as you wait about 3 weeks or so between planting each kind of corn.

They'll likely cross-pollinate if you plant them at the same time. Your Silver Queen ears would have some yellow kernels and your P&C might have a higher proportion of white kernels. Wouldn't hurt anything though. I'd stagger them though so the ears were true to variety.

Yeah this last cold spell has delayed germination somewhat, but I noticed some popping through today. If it would have stayed warm like it was, I think it would have been up in just a few days.

You sure do sell a lot of LSU figs for being such a da… a daw… a dawg… bleh, I can’t even say it. I might have to ship you a Tigers bucket. Keep carrying fertilizer in that red bucket and carry your harvest in the Tiger bucket!! Haha I’m doing sweet corn for the first time. Got 6 30 foot single rows.

I'm growing jubilee super sweet and allure first time growing allure grown jubilee super sweet the last 2 years really good stuff and I grew them in 4 x 4 raised beds with good success but built 2 larger beds this year so I can grow much more nowhere near what you are growing maybe 125 to 150 stalks

I don't understand why many gardeners don't do what food production farmers do and use. My family has double rowed most of our vegetables as do most farmers maximizing space and yield.
