This is extremely artisanal. It's like rolling your own coils and concocting your own vape juice out of unicorn tears, and harvesting electricity from the sun to slow charge your hand rolled lithium cells. Worth the effort if it's your jam. What a great tour of the process to get it all to work.

I just know enough to build my own rig, without even really understanding what anything does, but your videos are, generally, so accessible and interesting to watch. 16:00 I always forget that this game is called rush 'n' attack in your neck of the woods. Here in the UK, it's called Green Beret, and I am proud to say that I always had my name in the top 10 for this game at my local arcade. Played it to death on my Commodore 64 and then Amiga A500.

Just when I thought retro gaming only has so many layers, you manage to pull the rug out from under me. Now, if I can get a Cruis'n World arcade PCB running properly, I can die happy haha.

Your work goes way beyond reviews only, I start to see it as essential preservation of maybe the greatest memories of our lives... The wonderful debut of home gaming and computing and its development. And in that sense, I think you should be managing a giant museum that would be dedicated to preserving all this equipment that was once in our daily life, a place where we all could touch, use, and keep on our memories what made us happy.

This is a great idea ,miss the feel of the old games at arcades i played consoles but as a kid i was so impartial being old enough to play video games at the arcade as a child and they never gave you that sensation of belling up to the cabinet on a Friday night ,and blowing through my allowance :}

For convenience, I got a Sega Naomi cab a few years ago, it's already a computer setup in a sense, the screen is a Sanyo 39" semi flat in 31KHz with VGA connector input, I bought a trifreq chassis and a converter for the controls (the cab got a proprietary centralized controls box that regroup all the player 1 and 2 commands, 2 starts buttons and coin box controls, but connect to the Naomi system with a USB-B connector, the converter simply make the controls signals recognized as a keyboard). It works great in emulation. I planned to add JAMMA compatibility, coupled with the trifreq chassis, there will be almost no need for a video converter, only a cable converter, same for the controls going to the JAMMA connector. The cab itself is a hard piece of metal, very sturdy, the plastics are essentially here to decorate (except the control panel, it's made of plastic). The plus side are: the Naomi cab is incredibly cheap, got mine for less than 300€ in OK condition (totally functional, in need of a good refresh cosmetically), it's sturdy, the system is easily hackable to accept many cab systems (either single board, central systems with carts or a PC motherboard for emulation). The downside are: it's heavy, 130kg of pure Japanese goodness (even if the cab is mounted on wheels, I don't move it frequently). the screen is a CRT, with all the problems that occurs with them (on the good side, a couple of years ago, I found that replacements are still sold for not that much, but still an investment and flat screens conversion kits exists as a last resort). The screen needs a VERY specific resolution, there's some solutions, either hack the video card to spit the good resolution from the PC powering up or adjusting the parameters of the driver, but it require to wait for windows to finish the booting before power on the screen. That said, possessing a cab at home is just fantastic, playing at old arcade classics on the hardware with friends is pleasant (even if it's not the original hardware, it's still arcade tech) and it's a good looking piece in my living room :)

Ahh yes, arcade stuff! Great to see your collection growing Clint! I've been collecting, fixing and restoring arcade gear for ages now, started about 20 years ago. First pcb I ever bought was Robocop and the second was a Raiden bootleg, got both of those still and they still work fine. I bought a jamma cab not long after though, it's one by Electrocoin that has an easily rotatable crt monitor. Robocop gets used for testing crt monitors quite often after i've fixed them. I fix crt arcade (and sometimes build) monitors for members of a forum i'm on and also occasionally for a couple of local operators. I tend to pick up crt tvs (the non-fst type for 10" to 25") whenever I see them, but I have a decent stock of crt monitors and tvs from 10" to 29" in storage along with other arcade stuff. I still have most of my pcbs (NBA Jam and Primal Rage included!) but have been selling some recently, I think Xexex was the last one I sold. I occasionally fix pcbs, last one I fixed was Dig Dug and for that I have an Acorn multisync crt monitor that does 15 - 31 khz. A friend and I tend to often collect cabs and refurb them between us, we bought a Time Crisis 2 twin and 2 jamma cabs not long after Christmas and recently have been sorting out Nintendo Playchoice 10, Hang On and Operation Wolf cabs, amongst others. Still got a Tokyo Wars, a Crisis Zone and several others to get through! One thing i'd say though, if you have trouble with rolling pictures that'd be because most arcade pcbs often don't output a spot on sync signal, you'd probably be better off getting a proper arcade monitor (or 2, one for horizontal and one for vertical) even if you built a case for it to go in with the remote image adjustment controls outside, you wouldn't need the converters for those either. :)

Having nearly exhausted every home system and handheld available (by exhausted I mean system and games I have or had and want) this seems like the next evolution in my gaming addiction. Thank you for your insight! 😃

As someone who lives in a country where those kind of electronics are prohibitively expensive, seeing it in such a high amount of detail really satiates a bit of my hunger for old tech. Great timing! I've been looking at consolized Neo Geo MVS options recently but decided to go down the board and supergun route. A few days ago I ordered a MV1FZ (due to it having a socketed BIOS) and a entry level supergun/PSU bundle, along with the 161 game MVS multicart.

Clint's voice is smooth and calm. His content is interesting, but not exciting. The smooth jazz soundtrack eases me into my sofa. For tech and gaming enthusiasts this is the perfect relaxation viewing experience. I've fallen asleep to LGR many times, not because of boredom, but a sense of pure chill.

Doing this kind of thing is definitely a labour of love. It gets expensive fast but so worth it for games with that nostalgia feeling. I remember playing Snow Bros at college so that had to be the first PCB I bought. I also have a 1 slot MVS and a few carts. While I've never really liked beat em ups and fighting games (the biggest parts of the Neo Geo library) there are more than enough shooters and puzzle games to make it worth it for me. I originally used one of those Gonbes 8200 VGA converters but soldered together some simple adapters to allow me to play on my Sony PVM once I got that. Definitely one of those cases where you spend more time getting it to work than playing - but still lots of fun.

Another great video Clint, I might also swap my Retroelectronik Pro for a Parsec at some point, the daughterboard function seems pretty nice. And thanks for linking the mv1fz case I have been to lazy to make one for ages and It hadn't crossed my mind that someone would produce such a thing.
